Fanfic Meme - Day 11
Y'all don't know how lucky you are I committed to this meme. I so don't want to be working on a post right now!
Day 11. A fic that changed your perceptions of the characters
Old favorite author (astolat ), shiny new fandom (American Idol RPF), story = Mastermind (cook/archuleta or davids-squared)
First of all, I wasn't even thinking of Archie and Cook in the slashy way. But thenastolat got her hands on them and dayum. Her Davids-squared stories are charming and sweetly satisfying, and not terribly porny. There's sex aplenty, but it's usually described from Archie's POV, and therefore is full of tongue-tied breathlessness, and not much vocabulary. Archie met Cook when he was 17, deeply religious and sheltered by his family, so it's easy to imagine him being naive and inexperienced, and completely smitten with uber cool, but genuinely nice rocker Cook. She put out 10 stories in 2008, more of them lengthy and world building, but generally all had the coming-of-age flavor, except Mastermind, which is hilariously implausible, but also perfectly cynically believable, and gives sweet little Archie a totally new flavor.
I really can't choose which is my favorite of the Davids RPF between Time of Your Life, Madrigals and Misadventures, or real forever if. real has the most sex in it, and is a cool AU, ToYL is the most realistic, and the longest, and MM is a fantasy AU (astolat does wonderful period work in several fandoms). The boys are pretty and adorable throughout, and somehow she totally avoids the whole creepy voyuer/stalker feeling I got with most the other RPF I sampled.
