Are all the BSOs in fandom emotionally constipated? Is this why we love them? I'm failing to come up with any examples of emotionally intelligent and healthy characters being slashed together.

I mean, there's Jed Bartlett, but he has (equally awesome) Abby and therefore, doesn't need a boyfriend. Is there anyone else?

Fandom Appreciation - Day 7 - Counting My Blessings

DAY 7: Count your fannish blessings. Post about (at least) three fannish blessings, for example, three reasons you love your fandom or fandom in general, three happy fannish memories, three people who've inspired your fannishness.

Archive of Our Own. Hours of delight and awe right at my fingertips. I like the new search and page arrangement quite a bit. I love being able to dip a toe into or dive in the deep end of any fandom that strikes my fancy.

Kradamadness. Even though it's basically inactive now, Kradamadness is how I came to embrace a certain subset of WIPs. I used to be highly WIP-averse, but the fun and silliness inherent to Kradamadness meant I could participate (mainly as a reader), enjoy WIPs, and let go of them if they were eventually abandoned. After all, there was always something new around the corner. I didn't have to feel betrayed if a story ended up going nowhere. I have choices!!

Porn. I've always (since a ridiculously early age) liked reading porn. And fandom has given me a nearly infinite supply of well-written, non-skeevy porn. (Yes, I realize that fandom in general is also still quite encumbered by poorly-written and/or skeevy porn.

Porn sub clause a. Reliable recs so I can totally avoid the poorly-written and/or skeevy

Porn sub clause b. A back button that I'm not afraid to operate (okay, that's not from fandom specifically or exclusively, but it's a very fine fannish blessing anyway)

New forms of Expression. This can range from staying up-to-date on the latest RL slang (SRSLY? ORLY? w00t! were all introduced to me by fandom), staying up-to-date with fandom-specific slang (Paul Gross arms, BSO, PWP etc), or picking up expressions from my favorite characters.

Exhibit A: Just the other day, during my monthly update, I told my pantheon of managers, "okay, that's one impossible thing sorted. Only 5 more to go before breakfast." They were slightly bewildered, but they understood me from context. I smiled enigmatically.

Exhibit B: Today, I realized that I now can really empathize with the GenKill boys, because my latest project has me fucked sideways, without benefit of gun lube, and the sand in my ass is KILLING me. Thank you Brad Colbert and Ray Person for helping me to get this off my chest.

Kinkmemes. These are a really good way to expand your horizons. I'm just sayin'.**

Making New Friends. How wonderful is it that anyone can go from leaving anonymous newby feedback, to direct interaction with authors/creators, to being granted access to their RL entries, or meeting and interacting with them face-to-face, to being allowed to co-beta the most awesome/popular thing that's dropped on fandom in recent history?!?!

I could list nearly every single person on my DW reading list/LJ friend list as a "fannish" blessing (a very few of you aren't fannish, alas). You all enrich my days with your wit, wisdom and generosity.

I say unto you, verily, Fandom is a blessing.

In the YKINMK category: Good Boy by leashy_bebes is just old enough to qualify for today's challenge.

Animal play, puppy play, these are not my kinks, but this story is surprisingly sweet and hot. Avengers, Tony/Bruce
Tony is exhausted, sweet, and needy, Bruce is smart and generous. At 3459 words, it's not a huge investment to try something different, which is how I discovered it. I'm glad I did. I should have bookmarked it when I first read it, because it took way too long to relocate this morning, but it was worth it.

In the Older Man/Younger Man category: A Burning Patience by Mazarin221b Lewis, Lewis/Hathaway, 4717 words

An old dog learns some new tricks. Mild kink exploration, touching and hot, and totally needs a sequel.

In the PWP category, since I cannot seem to find the one that starts off in a California Pizza Kitchen: How's That for a Sign? by accol Generation Kill, Brad Colbert/Nate Fick, 2624 words

accol is a good writer, and these bite-size stories are great for standing in line, etc. Brad in a wet T-shirt is irresistable.

I seriously need to relocate the California Pizza Kitchen story though - I've been searching AOOO all day, with no luck. The thing is, they're so damn smart. The words they string together are unbelievable, and unbelieveably hot. Plus, the pretty doesn't hurt a whit.

Thanksgiving Top 5 Plus

‎5. I'm thankful I don't have to get up at 0400 every day to clean up dog vomit (tx Cosmo) like I had to today.

4. I'm thankful I still have my challenging and interesting job, even though we went through lay-offs and restructuring earlier this year.

3. I'm thankful for our trip to Kennedy Space Center this year, even though the Rocket Garden made me cry (or is that because?).

2. I'm thankful for the time, energy and funds to finish my 6-yr kitchen remodel, plus do a little needed re-decorating.

1. Most of all, I'm thankful for all the wonderful people in my life who love me and let me love them right back.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

And because this is my fandom happy space, you get all the thanks for helping me survive real life by giving me regular and excellent escapes when I need them, plus the laughter and tears and deep thoughts and sexy feels that go with all your wonderful stories and posts about other things you care about on a daily basis. I love my little corner of fandom with all my heart, and hope you all have a lovely day no matter where you are or what you are planning.

My Plans:
+ Watch the Macy's Parade with DH, and maybe eat some waffles with fruity salsa (if we feel ambitious enough)
+ Take advantage of unseasonably warm weather to hang our outdoor xmas lights and decorate the entrances
+ Watch football while partaking of yummy charcuterie, cheese and beer
+ Bake pumpkin pie and oyster dressing
+ Sit downwith DH and the boy (we're just 3 this year) for a dinner of Bacon-wrapped Turkey Breast with Pear Hash (a revival of last year's success), Oyster Dressing & Turkey Gravy, Famous Southern Jelled Cranberry Salad, Roasted Broccoli & Cauliflower with French-fried Onions, and Pumpkin Pie. We're still debating if we should open the Pinot Noir or the Late Harvest Riesling for dinner. (I don't know why we couldn't find Beaujolais Nouveau anywhere in this town. Buehler?).
+ Go to bed when I feel like it, and get up for a 9:00 salon appointment Friday. No shopping trips anywhere!
+ We might join friends at Old Sugar Distillery for Friday happy hour and mosey on to fish fry later
+ Saturday - rearrange some furniture in preparation for the girl's return next week
+ Sunday -the local products expo at the Arboretum, where we'll pick up Mad Urban Bees' gift packs for gifting out-of-state friends.

Fannish Immersion

DH and I mainlined season 3 of White Collar once it finally appeared on Netflix. Oh, Neal! Oh, El! Oh, Peter! Oh, show!!!!!!

( tiny thoughts on WC )I have been reading an insane amount of Teen Wolf, thanks to jerakeen (stories and recs) and Dira_Sudis (dira ) (stories) and the fangirl meetup. We watched ep 4, so I have some actual canon to go with it. Since it's all about the adolescent hormonal werewolf angst, I feel one ep is fairly sufficient for basis.

To balance Teen Wolf, I am also suddenly reading a lot of Lewis, which I have seen the first 2 eps, and since this is all about the mature, thoughtful, quietly competent men and their feels, two eps is a solid basis. Never mind I started reading both of these without benefit of canon - I've become accustomed to acquiring new fandoms this way. Apparently I'm nearly 100% non-spoilerphobic.

Also thanks to dira , because she loaned me the entire DVD set, I now have the first 2 parts of Generation Kill under my belt. DH is a hard core military movie/documentary fan, so it wasn't a hard sell at all. So far, I'm not seeing the Nate/Brad, but everybody does lust after Rudy, and I think there might be a case for Evan/Ray. Or at least an unrequited crush by Evan towards Ray. I have to say, it's hard to believe the same organizations that successfully run critical covert ops were responsible for invading ANY country. SHEE-eesh.

I've also reread two Vorkosigan 'verse books (Bujold), and all of Dira's GenKill/Iskryne crossovers (telepathic wolves!) and have managed most of the latest round of kradamadness That's a lot of reading!

Fan Girl Meet Up Today!

I am excite! Eight wonderful fans have RSVP'd, and I expect there will be much laughter and squeeage.

Also, I have to ask for help on a couple of things: 1) I promised I'd update a fanlore page with an icon I made, but I can't get it to embed. All it wants to do so far is show the link. 2) I read a Teen Wolf/Supernatural crossover (delightfully cracky) but since I've got very little canon for one and none for the other, I couldn't figure out who the last character to appear was. My only guess was Fox Mulder (fit the description fairly well, including the distraction by crop circles in Nebraska and the bagful of bees), but X-Files wasn't listed as source material, and this character wasn't listed in the tags. Since there will be TW and SPN fans present, I know I'll get an answer.

I was working on a fairly traditional brunch menu at first, but it came to me that this gathering from the outside would look like a gathering of proper ladies, so I twisted the dishes a bit sideways, and now we're having a brunchy tea party! Because how much more can we subvert a trope than to discuss boy-kissing and porn while partaking of tea?! Hee.

Fan Girl Meet Up!

Okay, I'm back from my whirlwind tour of the Dakotas, so it's time to finalize plans for the meet up.

I will host all fan girls (or boys) who want to attend at my home in Fitchburg on Sunday, Aug. 26 for a brunch-like gathering. I'm happy to provide all the consumables unless someone else wants to pass a dish or beverage. Please leave dietary restrictions in the comments with your RSVP. Starting time - no earlier than 11 am, and we'll just play it by ear after that.

We've figured out how to connect our laptops to our HD TV finally, so we will be able to screen anything from vids, to TV shows (Netflix, etc) or DVDs. I've seen lots of vid recs since Vividcon, so I expect we'll try at least some of those, and I'm totally looking forward to Dira's pimping of Generation Kill.

Please signal boost to our local folks who may not be reading here - the more, the merrier!

Calling All Local-ish Fangirls!

So. Dira and I have determined that the weekend before Labor Day, 8/24-26 looks like a good time for a fangirl meetup.

Dira has offered to show us as much (or as little) Generation Kill as we can stand. There are of course, other things we could view as well, and I'm thinking that several of you will be semi-fresh from Vividcon and may want to share awesome vids. I will probably never make it to Vividcon, because I'm already indentured to a different major event that weekend (The Annual Day of Public Drunkeness)

It seems like the only real things to decide are specific date, location, and menu :) I'm totally up for hosting here in Fitchburg, but if anyone else has a strong preference for another location, that's good too. I'm just looking forward to the gathering. And also, finally seeing some GK.

I'm hoping all y'all will spread the word, because I know I don't have all the locals on my DWircle. This is the place for rsvps and suggestions for activities and viewings.

Signal Boost: Challenge: 50 Smuts of Gray

slodwick is hosting an all-fandom challenge, and I highly approve! 50 Smuts of Gray will be fandom's improvement to that book. Even if you don't want to sign up, you should visit to see the format of the prompts - very cool (no pun intended).

I especially love that one of the shades/prompts is named "vodka." Now if I could only come up with an idea for that!

Additionally, the ever-sparkly kradamadness will come out of hiatus in August for a challenge to celebrate the newest Kradam releases! I can't wait - the mad mad women over there come up with the best stuff. Also, I feel I must acquire the newest releases to be able to play along (or at least appreciate the results).

Happy Mom's Day to Me!

The girl called yesterday for a Mom's Day chat, and asked if I'd heard about "50 Shades of Gray." Of course, I've heard of it, know that it's based on Twilight, but have no interest in reading it. KL on the other hand, had loved Twilight when it first came out, so she is giving this one a chance. She said, "Mom, the whole time I'm reading, I keep hearing your voice in my head. You're ruining the book!"
"What am I saying?"
"You're saying, 'this is terrible, why does the woman have to be so wimpy and helpless? Why does she need to be rescued by a man?' You know, all that stuff you pointed out about why you didn't like Twilight."
Mom, FTW!!

We discussed a lot of media that we're both interested in seeing together, and we can't wait, cause it's just 8 more days now, and I'll be showing her White Collar and Sherlock, and we'll try Downton Abbey together, and we've decided on a marathon viewing of all the Marvel movies before I see Avengers (she's seen it, and liked it even though she's only seen Iron Man and Thor). We're gonna do both new versions of Sleeping Beauty, but she's not sure she'll be able to handle the Charlize Theron version because "Kristen Stewart is so terrible."

She's incensed that people are saying "Hunger Games" is the new "Twilight" because "...Katniss is *badass* and Bella's just a whiny, helpless wimp." She loved the books and was quite impressed with the movie, and was telling me that this is a revolution in movies, to have a young, strong, female action hero, and she can't wait to see where we go next. She's also very excited for the new Hobbit movie to arrive.

LOL, I LOVE my girl! Sure, it could still theoretically be fun to be swept up by a rich handsome prince and kept in a glass tower, but she's much more likely to climb down the tower on a rope made from her discarded petticoats, strap on a sword and go on her own quest. She may be more girlie than me, but she didn't fall TOO far from the tree.

Social Networking is Hard

Yikes, I just posted something fannish on FaceBook. This here is supposed to be my fannish space, and LJ was supposed to be more of my RL musings (which are rarely being mused these days). FB is just the place where I keep in touch with high school people, my extended family and local events hosted by RL friends.

It's not the end of the world, I just said I enjoyed "The Help" and also mentioned that the woman who played Hilly (Bryce Dallas Howard) is Ron Howard's daughter. And then the squee thing came out: "She has his faaaaace!" I dunno, it's just that we have a certain language in fannish circles, a certain way of expressing ourselves, and I try to keep that completely separate from RL.

I guess it's kind of ironic, given that my online persona has been "fullygoldy" for 10 years, and it was supposed to signify me integrating all the aspects of my life into one whole being. Sigh. I was soo a pollyana at the time. I was going to be OUT about being poly and bi! That was just before I was introduced to slash. I'm pretty sure that talking openly about my slash habit in front of my Mormon relatives (who I mostly love and adore and don't discuss religion with) or my Catholic in-laws would probably result in a few disownments. And the poly thing is just not open for discussion at all anymore. SO. Separate sites for separate aspects of my life. And yet I keep posting more RL stuff here (because my LJ flist has pretty much defected here) and now my local fannish friends are posting fannish content on FB. Doh!

Thank you.

Thank you to everyone who's ever written a line of code, fixed a bug, wrangled a tag, answered a support ticket.

Thank you to the back-end coders and thank you to the front-end coders.

Thank you to everyone who's ever brainstormed about what the archive might do, and thank you to everyone who's poured their hearts, souls, and spare time into trying to make the archive do all of those things and more.

I use the AO3 every day. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for building it for me and for everyone who uses it -- and for everyone who doesn't use it yet but might use it someday.

This archive isn't something to which fandom is entitled. It's a labor of love. You make the archive as your gift to fandom, and I appreciate that gift so, so much.

Even though it isn't finished yet. Even though it isn't perfect yet. It's still awesome, and your hard work is tremendous and admirable, and I just want to say thanks.

So this thing happened on AO3 this weekend - the site looks different, but for me, it was very similar in look and feel. I didn't have any access problems, nothing disappeared, I don't use a fancy skin, so nothing broke. The stuff I searched for popped up quickly. I guess I was in the lucky minority, or I just didn't hit it at the right time to experience all the wrongs. I'm not a huge fan of the light gray background, but it wasn't horrible. I'm just grateful that I can reliable go one place and reliably find lots of fanworks. I used to love the "Complete Archive of Slash" hosted by Minotaur, but it was clunky to use, and too much work for one person anyway. It just seems like when one person creates something, people will be more forgiving, or they won't go there. Maybe the color scheme sucks, or you don't like the tagging system, but hey, it's still a valuable resource, so you can put up with those things. But since AO3 was created by an organization, it's been de-personalized in some ways. But as kass reminds us, it's ALL personal. So really, please remember to be kind to everyone who's giving so much so you can enjoy your corner of fandom a little more easily.

One Down, Nine to Go?

Back on Oct 1, I listed out the fandoms I'm reading without knowing the canon. There were 7 listed with zero exposure, 1 with half an episode, and 1 I had started reading at the begining of it's fandom, and finally started watching when the first season/series was nearly complete. I tagged the entry with 2 others that for some reason didn't make it into the original post. So that made 10 fandoms without a basis in canon.

Last night I finally saw Live Free or Die Hard. It's only been out since 2007, and I started reading the fic thanks to Nestra and Shrift and their Polyamorous Recs. Some solid authors have written in this small fandom, and I enjoy it alot.

So, comments on the movie:
1) I saw it on FX and they have too many (naturally), too long commercial breaks. bleh.
2) I missed the first 10 min, but the next 5 resolved the "Daisy Duke" moniker issue - I always thought John calling Matt "daisy" in fic was just shorthand for him being an ass.
3) I missed (if it was there) the basis for Matt's Red Bull addiction so I still don't know if it's canon or fanon.
4) My favorite bit: "Did you see that?!" "Did I see it? I DID it!"
5) John's bad habits wearing off onto Matt (he tries to throw a punch, he smart-mouths the bad guys with the guns, etc) are love
6) Lucy is tough ("Daddy? ... There are only 5 of them now.") What I thought was dumb though, was John and Matt are sporting scrapes, scratches and bloodstains from the first action scene. Lucy gets smacked around more than once and never has a bloody nose, split lip or even a bruised cheekbone. Can't let the girl look mussed up, eh Hollywood?
7) The "dog fight" between the fighter jet and the semi? Utter bullshit. It only would have been worse if McClane had jumped into the jet and landed it after the pilot ejected.
8) This was fairly early, which surprised me, I finally got to see John throw the car at a helicopter (#4) which gets referenced in most of the fics. I figured it would be in the climactic fight scene.
9) Lucy is a brunette! In my mind she has always been blonde. I thought maybe I was mixing her up with the daughter in 24, but no, wrong face. So it's going to bug me until I figure out who I was picturing as Lucy.

AAAAND, I've been reading Tony Stark/Steve Rogers fic, so I don't think I'm actually making headway on abolishing my canon-less reading list. *facepalm*

Fandoms Wot I am Reading, Without Benefit of the Canon

OY, how/why do I do this?!

I seriously have never seen the original canon for any of these, and yet, I am reading enough of them to have to fully include them in my "current fandoms. In reverse chronological order:"

Thor (it's all astolat's fault, though I totally intended to see the movie when it premiered, but RL had other plans)
Inception (IDEK, it just happened)
My Chemical Romance (but it's just crossovers with Adam Lambert-including Tommy macking on Frank spectacularly)
Sherlock (BBC)
Merlin (BBC)
White Collar (who can resist all the pretty? Now china_shophas me reading Clinton/Neal in addition to the OT3.
I recently reread the Supernatural/Friday Night Lights crossover by bone, (SO HOT!) which featured Dean/Tim. I've seen half of one episode of SPN, so I'm standing by my "no original canon" claim there.

Hawaii Five-O is also current, but I've finally seen at least half of season one, and everything that's aired since the premier of season 2, making it the only canon I'm watching that is currently airing.

What on earth is wrong with me?!?!

ETA: How much wine had I drunk when I posted this? I see I tagged it with "die hard" as in Live Free or, and "genkill" Generation Kill, but didn't even mention them. And really, Die Hard McLane/Farrell was probably my first "no canon" fandom!

That Was Weird

This morning, I woke up from a dream in which I was having hot, delicious sex with ::drumroll::

Helen Mirren!!!!!!!111!!

Now, my dreams tend to be pretty equal opportunity in the sex department, but when I dream of women, I rarely see/remember their faces, unless they're someone I know in real life. Strange fun fact: when I dreamt of men, for about the first 10 yrs of my marriage, they always had my DH's face, no matter what their name was or even if they were someone I knew in RL. So on the rare occassions that I'd see someone else's face in a dream, it was usually shocking enough to wake me up.

Then I went back to sleep and dreamt of David Hasselhoff being a jerk (thankfully there was no sex in this one - just, ewwww). I don't know what's going on in my subconscious. I very rarely dream about celebrities, and here were two in one day! Yay, fandom?

Adam Lambert's Sex Appeal

Is it amazing to anyone else that Adam Lambert (Musician) is a stand-alone fandom on AO3? I get having the American Idol fandom, with subsets for the different seasons, but Adam? He's got a life of his own. And currently has 1147 stories about him posted to AO3.

People! That's more than White Collar with it's 1019 delightful stories, or Star Wars, or Pirates of the Carribean, or you know, anything in Yuletide. I keep watching the count go up everyday. It's amazing how active this fandom is right now. If he continues to be his fabulous self, he could start oppressing fandom any day now! Think of it! Years and years of sparkly, near canon fic! Why, it could be as long-lasting and satisfying as (gasp) due South! The 2819 uploaded stories aren't nearly all - I'm pretty sure I've read that many on my own, before AO3 was created, and I'm nowhere near having completed the catalog. Hmmm, the Ray wars may have to take a back seat to CKR vs Lambert for who's the sexiest. And while Adam is so very shiny and sparkly, I think we all know who my heart belongs to. Besides, Adam's a baby compared to Callum, and I'm always always always gonna prefer the men to the boys.

Fandom Appreciation Challenge 2011 - Day 5

1) LadyHawke Fic: The Blessing by dragonfly PG, kinda gen, and all kinds of wonderful. I always loved this movie, and this little future fic of life after the curse is broken is something I never even knew I needed in my life until I read it this week.

2) Generation Kill Fic: Now it's Time to Make Your Own Demands by shoshannagold (LJ) NC-17 Xtreme BDSM. I'm a little hesitant to rec this because it actually squicked me a bit, and probably would be triggering for some. But Shosh writes beautifully, and she loves these men, and it all comes through. I'm pretty sad that we don't actively share a fandom right now.

3) Generation Kill Fic: A Quiet Place by shoshannagold (LJ) NC-17 hurt/comfort. It would be nice to believe that this is a usual dynamic in the field.

2. The Forest People by seperis SGA: McKay/Sheppard (This is spooky, chilling and absolutely beautiful. My heart just clenched for John and Rodney. I love that somewhere, somewhen, they are free and happy together with their team.)

3. The Cheap Trick Acceleration by Liviapenn Big Bang Theory: Penny/Sheldon (I am full of geeky, nerdy love for this!)

All three of these authors are solid. I have no qualms whatsoever about clicking through to anything they've posted :)

Today's challenge:

Fangirl Weekend

Friday was sasha_feather 's birthday celebration, and I was finally able to go socialize with the girrlz. It's been probably a year since I've been to bookclub, and although we've all run into each other at various other events in that time, I've really really missed those regular gatherings. I haven't read any of the bookclub choices in that time either. But this isn't about all the crazy in my RL that prevents me from getting my girl fix.

This is about getting that fix. DH had a terrible week, and I was expecting to have to skip the gathering, or for him to attempt to attend and us staying for maybe an hour before having to give it up for a bad job. But he said go, and I *didn't* say "are you sure?" I went.

So I got to give a fabulous Star Wars card to sasha, which made everyone howl with laughter, and I met more of her friends than I had before, in addition to the bookclub regulars. We were at the bookclub's fave place (Argus), with the hardest working owner/bartender I've ever seen. Gwen is amazing. She's seriously a pro. I got to dance to Adam Lambert with happy, tipsy girls. We talked about beer and brewing, tattoos, drinking, work/careers, and politics. Sasha's new girlfriend seems lovely and more than able to hold her own in the melee. were_duck was as adorable as usual, with an added side of kittenish and snuggly. Her girl was a lot more talkative than usual, and it turns out that we have some similar tastes in music. I got to make up a lot of touch deficit, and giggling deficit, and general fullygoldy deficit. The weather sucked, but I waited for it to calm down a bit before hitting the road. Even though it was only 4 hrs out it was heavenly.

Then for the rest of the weekend I read approximately 175,000 words of Adam Lambert fanfiction (mostly schmoopy), with a side of Merlin. I've also got another long AL bookmarked, because were_duck recommends mistresscurvy quite highly. I did manage to wash all the laundry, and do the grocery shopping, but the weekend was also dominated by my stupid PMS, which made the reading the only thing I was seriously interested in accomplishing. DH wanted to go to the protests/rallies, and I wanted to too, but I totally needed the sofa days, and he needed a bit more recovery time.

Dinner tonight was a delight, prepared by the multi-talented DH. We had crabcakes with greek yogurt remoulade, roasted corn and tomato compote and a spinach salad gazpacho. The menu was designed around our newest acquisition - a Wisconsin made vodka,"Referent" which is infused with horseradish. I liked it fresh from the freezer with lemon wedges, and DH liked it straight with a tomato juice sidecar. It is going to be fabulous with oysters on the half shell. I can only assume it will also be great with bloodys, but they're not MY drink.

Okay, I've got to get some sleep so I can be at work on time tomorrow. Better go neaten up the kitchen, fold the last load and hit the hay.

How I Learned to Live with WIPs

Firstly, Imma need some more lambert or kradam icons. And also Die Hard (as in Live Free Or), and possibly Hawaii Five-O. Shoot, I gotta have some White Collar too. Although I swear I at least downloaded some of those. Help a fangirl out?

Anyway. I know I've ranted (or at least mentioned) in the past that I can't deal with WIPs. I had to defriend a couple of my favorite writers because they'd caused me to wander into WIP hell, and I was never going to get out. One of them, Em Brunson, was actually a large part of the reason I wandered out of CSI fandom. I just couldn't take it any more. I love long meaty stories, but I hate reading them piecemeal. Part of it is I don't like exercising the patience it takes to deal with WIPs. But a big part is that an epic story can get off track or wander down a path it doesn't really need to explore, or get backed into a corner during the writing. Sometimes the POV will inexplicably change, or the characterization(s) will get shaky. This is why writers have drafts, and betas, and savagely rip out whole chunks of work before the final version gets posted. I LOVE a well crafted, brilliant story. I appreciate the blood, sweat and tears it takes to bring the story to life, but I prefer not seeing all of that until maybe afterward (in a DVD commentary). So reading a story that gets posted in bits and pieces (sometimes not even in chronological order) is excrutiating. Usually.

There are a very few writers who can post WIPs that I will gleefully follow, because their "chapters" always feel complete enough to stand alone. And these writers are experienced enough to think ahead and avoid disastrous pitfalls well enough, and they usually finish before moving on to something new. china_shop and synecdochic are notable examples. The former is a master at short stories, so her chapters are delightful little bites, and the latter writes in great flowing chunks, posting no less than 10k words at a go, so that you need the break anyway (also each break makes sense).

However, I am now firmly devoted to kradamadness , a monthly challenge com that is home to many, MANY WIPs, the majority of which get abandoned by the time the next challenge rolls around. And I love it. I mean, I do mourn my unfinished favorites, and sometimes I wonder why the hell I'm reading a 50-part piece of utter fluff, littered with grammatical errors and egregious spelling, but when the next challenge rolls around, I gleefully dive right back in. I can not get enough of these adorable boys. And while I love all the flavors of Lambert, the Kris/Adam combo is my absolute favorite. So, I'm in WIP hell, but I'm here with a bunch of crazy, amazing, creative people who are all having a blast. It could be worse.
