Tin Man

I missed the first episode of Tin Man last Sunday, and I didn't realize it was a mini-series until I caught the second half of the first ep repeating on Monday.  So I've got to rewatch it this Sunday when they're running it as a marathon.  It was an interesting take, but they bill it as a retelling, and then it turns out that DG isn't really the original Dorothy, she's a descendant, which made me go "huh."

Also, I think our director, Nick Willing may not be very experienced.  That was my initial reaction.  A quick check on IMDB shows that he mostly works in SFF, and he's mostly worn multiple hats - writer/director, writer/producer, so maybe he hasn't had a good mentor or gotten a lot of feedback since he's mostly in charge.

It's just that some spots were really over-acted.  This one springs to mind: DG is trapped inside a coffin-y box.  She's writhing in terror - it's written all over her face.  Then she says out loud, in a pretty flat voice "I'm scared.  I don't know what to do."  The actress was pretty good at conveying stuff with her face (not quite Elijah Wood-good, but who is?) so why make her do crappy dialogue?  At least when Judy Garland was saying "Oh Auntie Em, I'm so frightened" her voice was trembling and she had a reason to be saying it aloud.

The technical effects are pretty cool though.  I like the potentially gay scarecrow with his cool zipper hair-do too.  And CKR is not nearly as scrawny as he used to be.  It's a shock seeing him filled out that way - I've always liked the more filled out look anyway, but I'm going to have to get used to this.  Since he was a bad guy, I'm not sure if he was so pale for the part, or if that's natural.  Most the baddies seemed paler/cooler and most the goodies seemed warmer.  Visual cues without the hats?

So, anyone else interested in seeing the whole thing in one go?  It starts at 4.  Since it will run through dinner time, I figure we'll throw together some food - maybe pizza? I've got popcorn too.  And dominoes  :) Bring stuff, don't bring stuff.  Just give me a call or comment here so I know who's coming.

i agree

i enjoyed the retelling, and modernization of it. but then it kind of fell apart at the end. it was interesting to have the decendency twist, but that just made the rest of odd to be so parallel instead of more sequel-y. once again with so many sci-fi shows, the ending seemed to wrap up way to quickly and conveniently.

I tried watching this, but I just didn't get into it. I'm not much of an SF fan, I guess. However, if they'd spent any time cooking during the show, then MAYBE! :-)
