Goldy, I read your previous post. Sorry to hear about your frustrations with the polycon, and of life period. My own responsibilities prevent me from being as tuned into the poly community as I would like. But my observation is that this lack of participation problem is much larger and a growing problem in society in general. I belong to two photography clubs (and sometimes go to a larger third club). I have observed that these two clubs have had declining memberships and declining participation levels since I first became involved nearly five years ago. There are a higher percentage of us “hard core” that go to two or more clubs and that also masks the decline. Further, most of us are middle aged. I don’t know of any of our members under the age of 30, and yes we are relatively modern as even the oldest member is experimenting with digital. Generally, nation-wide there is a “graying” of photo clubs with a dirth of young and/or new members. You wouldn’t think that with this boon in digital photography going on everywhere.

My purpose is simply to point out that you may be swimming against a much larger stream than you realize. It's not the poly-community specifically but current pop culture in general. How to explain it? Are people so plugged into their electronics that they don’t have actual “face time”? or they lack social confidence and related social skills? Are real world clubs and yahoo groups too slow for people addicted to instant messaging and instant gratification? Is it simply that an over-weight population doesn’t have the energy to be actively involved? or deal with a multitude of challenges? Inquiring minds want to know.

Wow, Mark,
You don't do anything by halves, do you? LOL Those are some pretty big questions. I've also seen the people who've forgotten that face time is important. That's what cons are for, no? To remind you that f2f has benefits? Ah well.
