Holiday Menus

Boy, did we feast during the season!

Solstice Dinner
The tapas-based menu, with contributions from all attendees was a lovely compilation, and the company was wonderful too.
Starter course - shrimp & goat cheese quiche, warm goat cheese stuffed dates, and Asti Spumanti
Next - Truffled mashed yukon golds with seared duck breast and carmelized shallots & apples with Bordeaux
After - Falling-off-the-bone pork ribs with individual creamed spinach ramekins paired with Wollersheim Red
Last - Amaretto-spiked chocolate pots with crispy sugar cookies

Xmas Eve
Half our guests ended up staying home because of various ailments, but we thoroughly enjoyed the evening with nayad, wil & felix.  We made sure to send plenty of leftovers home with them so emorog could partake too.  Dinner was another collaborative effort, and you know, I truly love pulling dinners together this way.  It's not only the sharing out of work, but the synergy of coming together and having the whole become more than the sum, you know?

Salad of mixed greens, mandarin oranges & walnuts, splashed with olive oil & balsamic to taste, and topped with gorgonzola or asiago.
Baked acorn squash stuffed with quinoa, wild rice, dried fruits & walnuts
Linguini with carmelized onions and pine nuts
Sweet potato pie & vanilla bean ice cream

Two different shiraz from south east australia were compared and contrasted during the evening as well.  I believe the consensus was the second bottle, a 2004 Penfold's, was the more appreciated version.

Happy Christmas morning
Barley52 & Rupert conspired to prepare eggnog pancakes & bacon, we got to try out the Maple Praline syrup (sublime!) gifted by mcbeth & drstarbuck, and of course, OJ

Roast Beast? The Decker tradition - a mediterranean feast for Xmas dinner

Marinated & grilled leg of lamb presented on flat bread
Homemade Baba ganoush, Hummos, & Tabbouleh
Marinated artichokes, roasted peppers, roasted tomatoes, roasted garlic cloves, sweet midgets, cornichons, crunchy carrots, mixed olives, giant capers, sweet banana pepper rings, fresh sheep's milk feta (yum!), dates and fresh pomegranate in various bowls and platters
Chocolate covered peanut baklava & vanilla bean ice cream
I opened a J. Lohr Syrah, and everyone else shared a sparkling blood orange juice we found at the World Market

We ate with our fingers and forks until stuffed beyond full.

I love this time of year!  So many reasons to gather with loved ones and revel in each other, sharing tasks and food and memories...

Great minds think alike

This morning, after two days of hotel continental breakfasts, we made eggnog french toast with Nueske's bacon and the maple-praline syrup from mcbeth & drstarbuck. Cool!
