2013 Your Performance Improvement Plan Isn't Working

They do this thing where I work called a PIP (see title), so if you're not performing well, instead of firing you, they demoralize you first with the pretty much impossible PIP process, but it gives you time to look elsewhere before being let go.  Most people see the writing on the wall and bail before they have documented proof the PIP failed.

2013!! Why have you not found employment elsewhere?!?!

Two weeks ago, I had a middle of the night ER visit with DH - he had excruciating head pain for several hours before we went.  By the time we got there, the painkiller had finally kicked in and was at a 2 (of 10) when we arrived.  Four hours later, we headed home, no wiser.  The day after that, his opthamologist said she wasn't surprised at all he was having headaches, as his left eye cataract was getting pretty bad, and he'll probably need surgery in a year or so.  For now, he just needs a special Rx where his left eye is vastly different from his right.  (Got the new glasses ($280) today, has had them on for 5 hrs straight, no headache, HOSANNAH).

Prior to that we had the drama around the SUV we let the boy drive to work.  It stopped.  He couldn't get it to turn over.  It seemed like the ignition switch had died, but turned out to be the alternator. Le sigh.  $600 later, the boy is driving to work again. (some other stuff got done too - the alternator was a little over half the bill)

Two days ago, I noticed the refrigerator seemed a little warmer than usual (my wine was not cold).  I turned down the temp.  Nothing improved.  I cleaned the coils. Still no improvement.  The freezer was perfectly fine, but the fridge was warm.  Thank goodness it's winter. We loaded our stuff into coolers out the back door and called a repair shop yesterday.  Today, he arrived, determined the computer board in the fridge was kaput, and ordered a new one.  Came back and installed this evening ($380).

Last week the girl thought she had a UTI.  She started on cranberry juice, Echinacea & Goldenseal, lots of fluids, and amoxicillan left from a recent sinus infection (I know she shouldn't have had leftovers, but as long as she had them, we figured she should use them).  Things didn't improve.  Sunday, she went to Urgent Care, was diagnosed with a kidney infection and switched to Ciprofloxacin.  She's pretty sensitive to meds, with most of them making her naseous to various degrees.  She was barely keeping the Cipro down.  Yesterday, she stayed home from work and went to the primary care doc.  Who gave her IV fluids for dehydration and Tylenol3 for pain.  TODAY, the urgent care doc called her to say the final labwork came back, and she has a bacterial infection that is resistant to all known antibiotics, and she needs to go to the ER to be admitted for IV antibiotics !!!!! WTF.  We check with the primary care doc, who says, yeah, go to the ER.  I retrieve her from work, and off we go.  The ER docs think, "not kidney infection, must be appendicitis."  CT scan says "pffft, not appendicitis." Still just a kidney infection just a "special" one with weird bacteria, sitting higher in her kidney than normal. So she has new antibiotics (Augmentin), plus an anti-nausea drug.  While there, she participated in a medical study (can an MRI be used in place of a CT for appendicitis diagnosis) and helped a first year resident on her ultra sound rounds. So our 7 hour ER stay wasn't a total waste? Also, they're giving her $100 for participating (MRI was no charge), which will cover her ER copay.

The 3rd car, which the girl should be driving to work, is sitting in the garage, awaiting the day it goes to the shop for new brakes.  It is undriveable and will have to be towed.  It was supposed to go 2 weeks ago, but DH's ER visit discombobulated us enough that we didn't do it.  I was planning to do it tomorrow, but after this week's expenses, it's going to have to wait a bit longer.

BUT.  BUT, the upside.  Yeah, there's actually an upside for once.  DH is much improved, finally, at nearly eleven weeks post-op.  Even without his dentures, he's able to eat more food and is starting to regain a bit of the 30 lbs he dropped.  Fewer headaches on the horizon, thanks to the glasses.  New dentist (denture specialist) in the morning.  Oncologist tomorrow afternoon, for hopefully a good report.  His most recent CT indicates the "node" they've been watching in his lung is no longer there, so was probably just some inflammation.  His acupuncturist is doing fantastic things for the rest of him, and he's got a therapist for the stuff happening in his head.  Seriously, we're miles beyond where we were the last time I whined about this stuff.

Work is suffering from my lack of attention, but I haven't been PIP'd yet.  I'd just like 2013 to stop trying to make me it's bitch.

It appears we've hit our out-of pocket max of medical expenses for the whole year in the first quarter.  Yay? Now I am eating steamed dumplings and drinking vodka.  If I had a hottub or a bath deep enough, I might actually not feel like whining.

There ought to be some sort of out-of-pocket maximum for bad luck, too! I hope things improve from here.

Surely just by reversion to the mean things ought to settle down soon! o.O

And hooray for DH feeling better, I'm so glad to hear it! Fingers crossed for you all.

I guess it would mean spending a lot of time braced for disaster without actually helping you prepare for whatever the next thing turns out to be, but if that makes you feel better... *g*
