First Post with the New Laptop
Finally! Therefore, I give you Sting!
I got back from MN on Thursday afternoon, and passed out in deference to the hangover I'd had to ignore since 6:22 am. (MB is not allowed to buy me anymore beer, especially not Alpha King!)
Friday I went to the office and the box was on my desk. Spent half the day getting stuff reloaded and making sure the email would work and transferring files and favorites since I'll be back on the road to Joliet (via Waukesha) come Monday morning. Mostly the process went well, except for the fact that while trying to load Quicken on his laptop, DH encountered a fatal error that somehow also managed to wipe the active and backup files that I had put on my flashdrive for transfer. No, we don't know how it happened. I was seriously pissed though.
Now that I'm reconnected to the web, I can catch up - spent a lot of time last night reading stuff I couldn't read at work, and I've got to beta a story that's been waiting for a month, and finish writing the story I'd revived from the dead right before disaster struck. I've got a new list of "posts I haven't made" which includes restaurant, movie and book reviews, Mavis's head shots, a conversation with a soldier, and my mid-life crisis. MB recommended "The Art of War" as a business read, and I'm seriously considering some continuing ed to get a couple of certifications. So, there's a lot of stuff in my brain right now, and I wouldn't mind letting it leak out all over my journal :) But not today.
Today's plan is to make a shopping list, get groceries, make sure the boy gets to his various appointments, make sure DH has all the stuff and support he needs to make his contribution to the "Food on Fire" themed ABDC tonight, prep my "Fire Extinguishers" beverage (a fancy cucumber martini), spend the afternoon catching up with friends, spend the evening eating and drinking (but only to excess), and find out if my haircut renders me less kissable. Tomorrow will be brunch, laundry, housework, work work (just a little) and early to bed. There might be some time for journaling.

I went through his laptop and found an ancient (11-25-06) backup, checked the bank and found I could download back to 12-31-06, and figured I could reconstruct 5 days of November (or just make a balance adjustment and be done). So even though the disk refused to load properly on DH's laptop, it loaded fine on mine, and I proceeded. I was pretty sure I had balanced through most of June 07 (on reflection, it was probably closer to mid-June) so I downloaded 7 months at once and reconciled them all together. A $756 balance adjustment later, I figured I'd download July so far and get totally up to date. That's when Quicken pulled one of its nastier tricks (yes, this has happened before, kthnx). I go to reconcile July only to find that I'm now over $1200 out of balance. WTF?! The weird thing is, I can probably go back in today, and have the discrepancy magically disappeared, or I'll have to go back to the beginning and re-download a month at a time, but it will work out. It just pisses me off.
Quicken, when it works, is definitely such an easy way to keep on top of the finances, but I find myself battling it on a regular basis. In fact, the battles are so regular, that I tend to put off doing the checkbook balancing/bill paying chore until several items are overdue. I've tried many times to get it all up-to-date and come up with an easy-peasy system that will balance out the stress of dealing with Q, but nothing so far has stuck. Last month, in response to the postage rate going up yet again, I signed up for every automatic and online payment I could, then I balanced the checkbook, and asked DH to take it back over. He's sitting here bored, still trying to recuperate, ya know? It would give him something to do, and usually whichever one of us is the stay-at-home person does it anyway. I had taken it back when he was diagnosed, because I didn't want him stressing about his health and the finances. That request was what led to the fatal error/missing files. So damn. Unless someone out there has a Q 2006 (or later) copy that we could borrow to see if it would load on his laptop, it looks like I'm stuck with the family finances on my work 'puter. Not really a situation I'm comfortable with, but I can make it work with the flashdrive again.
