fullygoldy: Pinup Girl Catching (Batter Up)
Because I am not awesome enough to write something new in time for [personal profile] were_duck 's bday (today!) and because I will probably never actually finish this thing (which is 2 yrs old already!), I am sharing now.  My first fannish DW post!  Something wot I wrote! Something that combines [personal profile] were_duck 's fledgling interest in the one-true-sport and her (OUR) OTP!

fullygoldy: Ben & Ray in Canada (Someday)
Today's issue of a-word-a-day offered this:

A.Word.A.Day
with Anu Garg

inconnu

PRONUNCIATION:
(in-kuh-NOO)

MEANING:
noun:
1. A whitefish (Stenodus leucichthys) found in the arctic and subarctic. Also known as sheefish.
2. A stranger.

ETYMOLOGY:
From French, literally unknown. In 1789, explorer Alexander Mackenzie and his crew traveled the waterways of the Northwest territories in search of a Northwest passage. They came across an unknown fish and the French-Canadian voyageurs who were part of his crew called it inconnu.

 I have good reasons!

1) I haven't read the book (China Mountain Zhang)
2) I have ordered the book, but it hasn't arrived
3) I have two other books that did arrive (The Green Glass Sea and Earth Logic)
4) I left for work at 0645 this morning, spent 9 hrs driving or on my feet, and didn't have a lunch break, so I was too tired to schlep across town considering items 1 & 2.
5) I should be trying to finish a flashfic that has a Thursday midnite deadline (and is already over 2000 words!) (I need an SGA beta too)

Tomorrow, I'm near campus all day, but that's likely to be 9-10 hrs without lunch too.  And Wed I'll be back at the elementary schools all day.

From time to time, I've heard writer-friends lament having to name their characters.  I can relate.  Names are very important, and that's why I'm always very deliberate about naming things and especially about getting other people's names right - in spelling and pronunciation.

But for any writers on my flist, I have a present, or at least some friendly advice.  If you need inspiration for names, visit an elementary school.  Here is a selection of names I collected from three elementary schools that I toured today. (Obviously, most of my visit consisted of standing around and reading the walls.)

And all this from only 3 of the 8 schools I'm visiting this week.

gakked from [personal profile] roguebitch

When you see this, post a little weensy excerpt from as many random works-in-progress as you can find lying around. Who knows? Maybe inspiration will burst forth and do something, um, inspiration-y.

Well, I don't really have all that many WIPs, but I'll throw out these bits:

from an untitled CSI (Gil/Nick/Greg):

Greg lurches into Nick’s hand and shudders, but now Nick is nothing but soothing, drawing the pleasure out of him with long, sure strokes, licking and biting the back of his neck and tops of his shoulders, and whispering hot, delicious nonsense in his ear.  Finally, when he feels the pressure building, he cracks open his eyes again to meet Gil’s stare.  If he felt devoured before, he doesn’t have words for what he feels now.  The intensity, the flush rising across Gil’s face, the tent in Gil’s pants, the way Gil’s hands are rhythmically clenching and unclenching, carefully held away from his body.  It’s shocking and hot and “Ah! Nick! Oh! Ohhhh! G-Gillll!” he wails as his orgasm is ripped out of him.  He’s spurting all over Nick’s hand and the nice bedspread, shocked by all the sensations coursing through him.

from a commentary for thisisbone's Two-Player Game (Casey/Dan/Stacey Kerr):

After all this time, this is still the most satisfying story I’ve read.  The threesome is so realistic, and the boys seem like actual guys.  In fact, all of Bone’s men read as so convincingly male, that for a very long time, I was convinced Bone was male.  Silly me, I had no idea how unlikely that was.

This commentary should be posted by now, but just as I was getting ready to do it, I had an insight that I really wanted to include.  Unfortunately, it sounded much better in my head, and now I've lost the thread.  So I'm hoping I'll get it back soon and then Bone will think I'm a cool commentator instead of some random lurkery fangirl.

from an original smutty practice piece, Tongue-Twister:

I hope, by this time, that other lovely parts of you have been intrigued, are in fact envious of the care and attention lavished on your hapless digits.  Does the back of your knee pine for attention?  Shall I dip my tongue there for more exploration, or merely rub my closed lips in that silken fold?  Purrrrrrr….  Lie back, sweet one, I have not yet begun to acquaint you fully with my naughty tongue.  I’ll grip your hips and drag mySelf back up to re-explore the cavern of your mouth.  Mated tongues—gently, slickly dueling.  Does the roof of your mouth tickle when I lick it?

from the SGA Baseball AU that ate my brain last summer (Sheppard/McKay):

I couldn't decide, so have three  )

fullygoldy: Sting Performs Roxanne (Sting)
Finally!  Therefore, I give you Sting!

I got back from MN on Thursday afternoon, and passed out in deference to the hangover I'd had to ignore since 6:22 am. (MB is not allowed to buy me anymore beer, especially not Alpha King!)

Friday I went to the office and the box was on my desk.  Spent half the day getting stuff reloaded and making sure the email would work and transferring files and favorites since I'll be back on the road to Joliet (via Waukesha) come Monday morning.  Mostly the process went well, except for the fact that while trying to load Quicken on his laptop, DH encountered a fatal error that somehow also managed to wipe the active and backup files that I had put on my flashdrive for transfer.  No, we don't know how it happened.  I was seriously pissed though.

Now that I'm reconnected to the web, I can catch up - spent a lot of time last night reading stuff I couldn't read at work, and I've got to beta a story that's been waiting for a month, and finish writing the story I'd revived from the dead right before disaster struck.  I've got a new list of "posts I haven't made" which includes restaurant, movie and book reviews, Mavis's head shots, a conversation with a soldier, and my mid-life crisis.  MB recommended "The Art of War" as a business read, and I'm seriously considering some continuing ed to get a couple of certifications.  So, there's a lot of stuff in my brain right now, and I wouldn't mind letting it leak out all over my journal :)  But not today.

Today's plan is to make a shopping list, get groceries, make sure the boy gets to his various appointments, make sure DH has all the stuff and support he needs to make his contribution to the "Food on Fire" themed ABDC tonight, prep my "Fire Extinguishers" beverage (a fancy cucumber martini), spend the afternoon catching up with friends, spend the evening eating and drinking (but only to excess), and find out if my haircut renders me less kissable. Tomorrow will be brunch, laundry, housework, work work (just a little) and early to bed.  There might be some time for journaling.

Writing UnProgress

fullygoldy: Fork you (Fork you)
Untitled CSI
Total word count:  8471
Character I most want to slap:  Nick (his motives aren't entirely pure)
Character I least want to slap:  Gil  (he's trying to keep it all above board)
Character who is frustrating me the most:  Greg (hypocritical much, greg?)
Level of hatred for writing this story:  7/10  I've got to rewrite the scene I worked the hardest on making realistic.  Complete rewrite.
fullygoldy: Natalie Reads Slash to Dana (Privileged)
[personal profile] synecdochic has been posting daily progress reports on the epic she's been working on forever now.  They're supposed to keep her moving forward. Yesterday's report was longer than usual, but just as hysterical as ever:

Cairo is Burning
Total word count: 171,951
Pages, when manuscript-formatted (double-spaced, Courier 12, 1" margins) in Word: 885
Word's AutoSummary function: still fucking hilarious
Current section: 7/9 ("and all them vulgar kings on all their dirty thrones")
New title of section 1: "this highway needs rain across both its lanes"
Character I most want to slap: Daniel (no, he still hasn't explained what's going on)
Character I least want to slap: Sam (who is being very talkative)
Amount I do not want to go to the dentist tomorrow: vast
Activity that proved I so did not want to be writing tonight: re-reading poetry written when I was 17
Level of gratitude I owe [personal profile] rydra_wong for talking over Tok'ra vs. Goa'uld with me: immense
Level of hatred for writing this story: 6/10

I'd love it if more writers started doing this.  I'd love to see [personal profile] icarusancalion's update for Out of Bounds.  Or [personal profile] cesperanza! I know she's working on something, an update would be way too cool.

And thanks to the beta-ing I've been doing for [personal profile] roguebitch, I've been inspired to dust off an old CSI story.  It may even see the light of day this time around.  My progress report:

Untitled CSI
Total word count:  8053
Character I most want to slap:  probably Gil.  (He's being way to methodical.)
Character I least want to slap:  Greg.  (He's just going along for the ride.  It's turning out to be a pretty nice ride.)
Character who is surprising me the most:  Nicky.  (Dayum, boy, you've got a mouth on you.)
Level of hatred for writing this story:  5/10?  Not hating the story, but not loving the process.

[personal profile] apple_pi's Grammar Lessons

if we had lessons like these when we were in school, we'd all be much better at grammar (and maybe even spelling)!  I think all the really best lessons would make you want to spend time in your bunk (alone or accompanied), heheheh.

Make sure to read the comments too, because several TAs chimed in, and I don't think any of the most common faux pas were missed.

I almost never write, so I figure if I do write something, maybe I should post it...  This was just a spur of the moment comment fic for [personal profile] texasbekinspired by her post of April 15.  She mentioned there's no boy-boy action on her parenting blogs, LOL.

Due South playground snippet

Ray surveyed the play area with narrowed eyes. Where the hell was his favorite block? Aha! It was being carefully placed at the top of that Benton-boy's impressively high tower. Well. That was just too bad for little Benton, because Ray wanted his block back *now.*

"ugh." The sounds of blocks crashing down around them was as satisfying as riding his trike full speed down the driveway.

"Give it back! Give it Back! GIVE IT BACK!!"

"Give what back, Ray? Why did you knock me over, Ray? That wasn't very polite, you know."

"Give it back, or I'll, I'll..." Ray cast about wildly for the worst thing he could think of. "I'll kick you in the head!"

"Boys! Stop that right now!"

"Aww, Stella. You're no fun."

plus? Bek made me this icon a long time ago, and it is totally appropriate for the story!
fullygoldy: Sheppard & McKay in Transporter (You are here J/R)
I think this is the first story I've ever posted to LiveJournal. It's definitely my first to [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic which is a challenge community for Stargate: Atlantis writers. This was written for the folklore challenge.

Title: The Wizard of Atlantis
Author: fullygoldy
Rating: What's less than "G"?
Category: Gen
Spoilers: Through Season 2
Word count: 1079
Warnings: There's a bad, very bad, wrong, with a side of bad, manip that goes with the story.
Disclaimer: insert standard form here.
Author’s Note: I'm terrible with graphics. I got the visual first, and figured I better have some text if I was going to post. I apologize in advance for subjecting you to this. Also, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] texasbek for the last-minute beta.

Summary: John Sheppard has a rich interior life.

fullygoldy: Yellow Roses (Smoke dreams)
No, I'm not really a writer.  I do love reading just about anything that is extremely well-written though.  I'm also pretty decent as a technical writer/editor.  I've dabbled on and off in creative writing, but I rarely finish anything I start because I never think what I'm working on measures up to all the wonderful examples I've personally read.

Earlier this year, I picked up "The Best American Science Writing 2005," edited by Alan Lightman.  It's a fairly small paperback volume that has been riding around in my purse for several months.  I pull it out whenever I'm in a Dr.'s office, which is nearly every Friday this year.  Last week, the article I was reading, "Dining with Robots" by Ellen Ullman turned out to be some fabulous food porn!  I want to share it here, but I've done food to death lately, so today I'm sharing the next-to-last article, "The Sea of Information" by Andrea Barrett.  Ms. Barrett is a novelist, and her essay "...illuminates the differences in the way that artists and scientists work, especially in their use of information" (Lightman).  The passages that struck me most were:

I'm really glad I found this compilation.  There are some fascinating and informative articles and essays in it; only 2 in the whole list didn't hold my attention.  I never would have seen any of these on my own, so the compilation serves a useful purpose in giving these fine works greater exposure.  I'm sure that's exactly what the editors intended, so yay for them.  And yay for me, because I'll be looking for the 2006 volume as soon as the year turns.
