fullygoldy: CKR Smile More (Smile)

It turns out that I created this journal to post my fannish stuff, and then promptly quit posting fannish stuff.  I haven't made a DW post since July 29!  Sheesh.

So, TV:  Hell's Kitchen, No Reservations (Anthony Bourdain), Glee (I've always loved musicals, and envy people who can sing and dance), most of season 5 of Weeds (Oh, Nancy!), and I need to catch up with Big Bang Theory,

DVDs:  The last season of Due South (mmm, CKR and Oh, Fraser, you goofball), Suspicion (Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine, and OMG so glad we've been liberated since then), lots of Band of Brothers (DH is rewatching).

Music, Movies: No Report

Books: Nada, except I re"read" Heat by Bill Buford (audio book) and am all inspired by italian cooking again.

Fanfic:  Pretty much rereading all my faves in Due South, SGA, and all of Astolat's Supernatural, plus her new Idol RPF.  Seriously, WTF?  I don't DO RPF/S, except for when Astolat writes it.  And I thought her Cook/Archuleta was sexy and charming last year, but her "Kradam" (Kris Allen/Adam Lambert) is totally smoking.  I must report I have reserved a luxury box in hell. Want to join me? Also enjoying the DW comm:  singularity (Star Trek reboot).

In other fannish news: Last weekend at our annual Oktoberfest, some of the WisCon book club members (you know who you are,  LOL) introduced my co-worker to the concepts of slash in general and Wincest in particular. I was pretty shocked by this turn of events, but he (HE!) is a pretty open minded guy, and he has mostly women in his life (he's a fraternal twin, he's married and has 3 girls). So he rolled with it, and there was much hilarity.  It gets better though.  He shared with the group that his nephew is Eric Szmanda.  That's right, his nephew plays Greg Sanders on CSI!  So awhile later, I hear one of my friends say to co-worker, "gee, I bet there's even been slash written about your nephew..." at which point, 4 faces turn to look at me for confirmation.  And what can I say, but "Oh my god, yes. Yes there is slash written about your nephew." Then I jumped up and ran to the other side of the bonfire, where I confessed to emorog this horrifying truth, "Not only is there slash written about his nephew, but *I've* written some of it!" Of course, I had to follow up with "I've written about the character he plays! Not him personally! ewww!" LOL.

As much as I love all of my friends, I was very glad to have you all finally drift away so that conversation could come to an end.  Except of course, I had to check in with co-worker on Monday morning to see how traumatized he was.  And yay, he wasn't.  He said he had an excellent time and enjoyed hanging out with all y'all.  By then I had learned that my WiPoly friends had also introduced him to the concept of polyamory (reported by DH) and he had rolled with that one too.  There was just a touch of confusion later on, when he turned to emorog and mentioned "your ex-wife."
emorog:  um, no, she's my current wife.
me:  his *only* wife.
co-worker: But, but, there's that other gentleman, 'W?' (and we didn't realize at the time that W and N had already explained the parentage of the 3 boys).
emorog does not say:  Yes, he took the boys home with N for some quality time, and I stayed here to catch some quality time with my girlfriend.
co-worker (turns to me): what am I missing? Don't leave me in the dark.
me with deer in the headlights look to emorog: Ummm....
emorog:  Yes, he's our friend from Eau Claire.  He hangs out with us a lot. Any questions?
co-worker: No. I'm good.

And lo, he was good.  He had finally connected the dots from the two earlier conversations, realized the 6 of them were a family unit and didn't need any further details. But I'm really glad no one else from work showed up.  I don't think I would have survived it.

Bright Spots

fullygoldy: McShep since 2004 (Opressing fandom)
The week was kind of rough and tiring, but there were a few bright spots, courtesy of my fannish flist.

First:  [livejournal.com profile] sheafrotherdon linked to a Baseball SGA AU!!  Which I started asking the universe for about 2 years ago, and in fact have written a few scenes in desperation.  This one, written in the mcshep match by the Away Team is fun and sweet, and has some excellently detailed descriptions of the mechanics of pitching and hitting that lend real credibility to the story.  I'm not sure the characterizations are as good as they could be, and the sex takes place off screen, but it's still worth the read.  As a bonus, in the comments, we get this link to a rec list of baseball-themed SGA!

Next (in the order I experienced these):  [personal profile] crysothemis wrote SGA!!  Of course, she's written it before, but lately, she spends most of her creativity on absolutely gorgeous stuff like this:  John vs. The Jabberwocky.  I'm so thrilled she put *words* to paper this time.  It's got all the classic tropes:  Oblivious!Rodney, Repressed!John, BAD SEX!  Plus, it really delivers the kissing AND the pr0n.  It is made of ginormous WIN.  Go! READ!  Do Over by crysothemis

Third:  [personal profile] cesperanza posted Anti-climax on her lj, late at night, so I woke up to this the first thing Wed morning!  It is teh awesome, as usual, with a teeny side of "team-fic" and some more Bad!sex.  "I'll try not to break anything"  is the best line EVAR.  So perfectly in character.  Oh, boys!

Finally:  [personal profile] cesperanza re-linked her SGA vid, DNA which I know the music-loving scientists on my flist will grok, so I'm just passing on the good karma (you don't have to know the show to enjoy this).

fullygoldy: Sheppard Knows What Boyz Like (Boyz)
Yeah, late to work this am, and thought I'd console myself for even having to be here by taking a few moments for a quick "comfort" read.  A request on [profile] sgastoryfinderssounded promising...

AIIEEEEEE!!  Neither Rodney McKay, nor John Sheppard are emotionally aware/intelligent enough to have been in this story.  There they were, having honest dialogues, about their feelings!!  Part of the story was in front of an audience.

Sheesh, DH is the most emotionally honest person I've ever been in a relationship with, and even he doesn't use this vocabulary.  They are just NOT those guys.

Why, oh why, can't I follow my own rules about new authors?  Also? I woke up with my neck feeling the best it's been all week, and as soon as I arrived in my cube, it started hurting.  I may have to rethink my vacation schedule for the year.
fullygoldy: Sheppard Protecting McKay (Hold me J/R)
(2nd try, thanks to an autosave feature that saves BLANK posts!

The other day, I was reading a story called Resilience by Tira Nog. I’d decided to read it because it was recc’d on a list that included a lot of stories I had already enjoyed, and this was practically the only thing new-to-me on the list.  I figured that even if I didn’t know the reccer, our tastes seemed fairly similar.

However, as I was reading this l o n g piece, I kept hearing this phrase over and over in the back of my head: “She'd so clearly gotten the spectacularly wrong idea that Rodney was a shy, sensitive guy underneath it all, and if she could only get through to his soft chewy center they'd live happily ever after.”  Which is from the opening of [personal profile] astolat ’s delightful story, Loves Me Not.

I just couldn’t help the comparison.  Because the Rodney of Resilience is nothing but a soft, chewy center, and he’s accompanied by a John who is painfully self-aware.  I made it through 5 chapters before I finally gave up.

Checking the bottom at last, I see that the story had a total of 10 chapters.  And this is where I really, really appreciate the authors who post a clue to length along with their stories.  I don’t really care whether or not they choose word count or file size, I just like to have an idea going in.  Because if I’m mildly annoyed with a story, I might yet be bored enough with RL to continue reading if I think the story is going to end soon.  I could tell this thing was long-ish, but it wasn’t until I had given it what I felt was more than a fair chance, that I finally bailed.

So this experience serves as a reminder to me of my own rules:
1) Stick with authors you know,
2) If you’re branching out, stick with recs from people you trust,
3) (did not come into play with this story) Avoid WIPs like the plague – even from authors you love (I’m still stuck in WIP hell with [personal profile] icarusancalion ’s Out of Bounds, and [personal profile] synecdochic ’s Take These Broken Wings (not to mention the AU fic&community this AU has spawned), and [personal profile] janissa11 ’s long-abandoned SN and CSI WIPs), and finally
4) Hit the back button as soon as you’ve established the characterization does not agree or mesh in any way with the characters in your head.

My slash life would be so much easier if I weren’t a softy that frequently forgets these rules.

Here is where a more detailed review of the named WIP authors would be if the autosave feature actually did anything useful.  Suffice it to say, [personal profile] cesperanza  with her one fandom/one story at a time rule has totally spoiled me for having any true patience with WIPs.  Thankfully [personal profile] synecdochic  is frighteningly prolific and usually posts completed short stories within open universes, so it doesn't usually feel like WIP hell.

Plus, there's a Smallville fic in the list, which I haven't read, but have absolutely no problem reccing, sight unseen.  [personal profile] resonant  are the other two for those of you not paying attention).

ETA:  What is it with LJ and the username thing?  Either it wants to insert a page break before and after, or it wants to ignore any and all spaces between a name's end and the next word!  Sheesh.

I posted my entry for [community profile] dvd_commentary this morning.  This is my first ever DVD commentary, so I was a little worried that I would not do the story justice.  Thankfully, [personal profile] texasbek held my hand and did some cheerleading too.
I had it mostly done within days of signing up, but then I thought I had something interesting and pithy to add.  Unfortunately, I was never able to recreate exactly what that might have been, so I made a few minor edits yesterday and posted anyway.  ::sigh::

But really - Two-Player Game is awesome!  I love it to itty bitty pieces!

When you see this, post a little weensy excerpt from as many random works-in-progress as you can find lying around. Who knows? Maybe inspiration will burst forth and do something, um, inspiration-y.

Well, I don't really have all that many WIPs, but I'll throw out these bits:

from an untitled CSI (Gil/Nick/Greg):

Greg lurches into Nick’s hand and shudders, but now Nick is nothing but soothing, drawing the pleasure out of him with long, sure strokes, licking and biting the back of his neck and tops of his shoulders, and whispering hot, delicious nonsense in his ear.  Finally, when he feels the pressure building, he cracks open his eyes again to meet Gil’s stare.  If he felt devoured before, he doesn’t have words for what he feels now.  The intensity, the flush rising across Gil’s face, the tent in Gil’s pants, the way Gil’s hands are rhythmically clenching and unclenching, carefully held away from his body.  It’s shocking and hot and “Ah! Nick! Oh! Ohhhh! G-Gillll!” he wails as his orgasm is ripped out of him.  He’s spurting all over Nick’s hand and the nice bedspread, shocked by all the sensations coursing through him.

from a commentary for thisisbone's Two-Player Game (Casey/Dan/Stacey Kerr):

After all this time, this is still the most satisfying story I’ve read.  The threesome is so realistic, and the boys seem like actual guys.  In fact, all of Bone’s men read as so convincingly male, that for a very long time, I was convinced Bone was male.  Silly me, I had no idea how unlikely that was.

This commentary should be posted by now, but just as I was getting ready to do it, I had an insight that I really wanted to include.  Unfortunately, it sounded much better in my head, and now I've lost the thread.  So I'm hoping I'll get it back soon and then Bone will think I'm a cool commentator instead of some random lurkery fangirl.

from an original smutty practice piece, Tongue-Twister:

I hope, by this time, that other lovely parts of you have been intrigued, are in fact envious of the care and attention lavished on your hapless digits.  Does the back of your knee pine for attention?  Shall I dip my tongue there for more exploration, or merely rub my closed lips in that silken fold?  Purrrrrrr….  Lie back, sweet one, I have not yet begun to acquaint you fully with my naughty tongue.  I’ll grip your hips and drag mySelf back up to re-explore the cavern of your mouth.  Mated tongues—gently, slickly dueling.  Does the roof of your mouth tickle when I lick it?

from the SGA Baseball AU that ate my brain last summer (Sheppard/McKay):

I couldn't decide, so have three  )

fullygoldy: Yellow Roses (Books)

Wow! I spend one Saturday reading actual books with paper pages, and my flist explodes with the SGA Kissing squee, LOL.  Lots of tasty morsels over there, yes indeedy.

Since I read two whole books though, I figure I ought to review them.

The Privilege of the Sword by Ellen Kushner was on my WisCon reading list.  I hadn't intended to read it first, but I was in Borders with the kids on the 4th, and it was the only thing on my list I could remember well enough to find (although I suspect the majority of my WisCon list cannot be picked up at will at Borders).  It's a YA Fantasy story, with a 15-16 yr-old girl as the central character.  She learns to be a swordsman at her Uncle-the-Mad-Duke's whim, and she learns alot of other stuff too.  Unfortunately, while I did lightly enjoy this read, because it is fun and engaging, I was also annoyed a lot of the time.  It's set in a time when women are property and the rules of society are everything (and nothing simultaneously - as long as you have wealth and/or power).  And the women are all trained from birth to help perpetuate the situation.  So the semi-endless prattle about dresses and parties and catching a man just grated on me.  The cool thing about the story is that the Mad Duke is completely in love with his former swordsman, and since he can't or won't let himself have that relationship, he runs around the city in a perpetual state of debauchery with both men and women.  So our proper young Lady Katherine gets quite an eyeful of beautiful young men in various stages of undress, and actually engages in a bit of voyeurism near the end - so fun for any slashers reading along.

Next up, I picked up Mavis's latest as soon as she finished it.  Sarah Dessen's, the truth about forever.  Another YA, since Mavis is actually in that age group.  It's about a girl's summer between Jr and Sr year.  She'd lost her dad 18 mos before, and is still trying to come to grips with the loss.  Her boyfriend is charming /sarcasm, but she manages to figure it out with the help of a bunch of new friends.  See, she ends up working for a catering company run by an unorganized woman, her two nephews, and two other neighbor girls who may have been related as well.  This wacky group of people are entirely unlike her normal crowd, and they're a little more realistic about surviving life in the real world.  She learns something from them, and she's able to help her mom learn a little of it too.  It's a sweet and hopeful story, with realistic depictions of what teenagers get up to during the summer months, minus the sex. ::g::

Rupert also got a book that day - the one missing from a series he was reading, and gobbled it down.  He was happy to have some holes plugged, but it's not something I'm going to be reading.

fullygoldy: McShep Grins (Well Done J/R)
Hey, [personal profile] sasha_feather !  I found those links finally.  Sheesh, I'm sorry I mis-remembered [personal profile] astolat linking to them but here they are:

Double Bed  by [personal profile] icarusancalion  and missing scene by [profile] resonant8   are both fanfics of A Beautiful Lifetime Event.  The first one is rated G-ish, the second is definitely NC-17.

Also, [personal profile] 30toseoul 's index page is here but you can find it by clicking on her name, and going to her recent entries page.  The very top post is dated way out so it's always at the top of the page and it links to the index.  I think that's a nifty trick.

And finally, In the City of Seven Walls by [profile] auburnnothenna   I don't even know where to begin with this one.  It's huge.  It's intense.  It's got lots of the pretty and the sex, sure, but it also has lots of realism.  What goes on in the mind of someone who's a prisoner or slave?  At what point do they accept their fate?  If they're "rescued" after acceptance has been achieved, can they really go back home?  Can they go back even before acceptance?  Exactly where will home be at that point?  It makes you think.  This story asks the big hard questions and doesn't gloss over the answers.

70 Sexism: A Spotter's Guide
Feminism, Sex, and Gender•Capitol B• Saturday, 1:00-2:15 p.m.
It's relatively clear what makes a work feminist—relatively—but in these days of more subtle sexism, when at least lip service to equality is required, what makes a work non-feminist, or anti-feminist?
M: Lyda Morehouse, Lee Abuabara, M. J. Hardman, Betsy Lundsten, Graham Sleight

Listen up, you women and men, I found this panel to be extremely informative and thought provoking. I had considered attending Liking Your Life in an Unlikeable World: Personal Energy for Political Work, in this timeslot, but the Sexism panel kept cropping up in my mental to-do list. I was also concerned that it would turn out to be nothing more than a litany of “that’s anti-feminist” objections and I would be expected to apologize for not noticing, or worse, liking something objectionable. Of course, I was a n00b, so I didn’t really know what to expect. I certainly didn’t expect the excellent moderating skills of Lyda Morehouse. Besides being witty and sharp, Lyda kept the conversation moving, and made sure there were lots of opportunities for interaction and clarification. She wasn’t afraid to wrest everyone back on topic, nor was she hesitant about sharing her very strong opinions. I like that in a moderator.
[livejournal.com profile] vito_excaliburbegan a summary of this panel, and as vito says, “Well, MJ Hardman was on the panel, and largely as a result of that, I just don't think it could have gone better.” I totally agree. MJ is a doctor of linguistics and a professor. She is studying the language of a culture that has no hierarchy or ranking in its expression. It’s a very weird concept for us traditional westerners, and one she had difficulty mastering. I’m not sure if the study of Jaqi languages caused her to notice the sexism inherent in our western languages, or if she was already aware of this phenomenon and was searching for an exception. MJ is very passionate about the topics of linguistics, feminism and equality, and her passion kept the conversation from ever becoming dry or boring.

The first new thing I learned about is “denial of agency.” English is constructed and expressed in a way that “denies” a female’s “agency,” where denial ~ negates, denigrates or ignores, and agency ~ action, will or ability. As an example, MJ shared a story a student told her: He had been keeping his 4-month old daughter entertained in a hospital waiting room. Her favorite game was pulling herself to a standing position in his lap while holding onto his fingers. A woman who was waiting also, tried to strike up a conversation by opening with, “Aren’t you the strong little boy, pulling yourself up like that?” The father answered, “yes, SHE is very strong, and she loves this game.” To which the woman replied, “Oh, how cute you are letting daddy pull you up over and over!” Can you hear the pins dropping? The room was silent for a second before the outraged gasp took over. As MJ pointed out, this woman had no agenda for saying this. It’s just the way our society has ingrained us to automatically deny a female’s agency, and the tool that keeps it ingrained is the structure of our language.

Even when a woman does something that is clearly active, her accomplishments are expressed in the most passive terms possible. A female cannot be the subject of the sentence, only the object, especially if there is a male in the sentence too. So, if I excel at my job, and my boss notices, my co-workers are way more likely to say “The boss promoted her again,” instead of “she worked hard for (or deserved) that promotion.” The only time our language structure allows for the woman to be the subject, is when she is also a victim. MJ rather flippantly called this “taking the perp out of the subject.” But it has merit. e.g. If you are going to discuss the crime of rape, you will say, “She [subject] was raped [passive verb].” You might also add, “…by the frat boy, milkman, whomever” but the very structure of the sentence makes the perpetrator-as-object forgettable, and does nothing to hold him responsible for his action. The properly equal way to express this crime is “He (or the frat boy, milkman, whomever) [subject] raped [active verb] her [object]. In the first case, the victim is made the ‘responsible party’ because she is the subject. But the true responsible party can only be held accountable if he is the subject. As I was listening to the words ‘subject’ and ‘object’ being bandied about, I recalled that I had read a book several years ago that hammered home the definitions of those terms for me, “The Bonds of Love, Psychoanalysis, Feminism, and the Problem of Domination,” by Jessica Benjamin. From the overleaf: “She reveals that domination is a complex psychological process which ensnares both parties in bonds of complicity, and shows how it underlies our family life, our social institutions, and especially our sexual relations, in spite of our conscious commitment to equality and freedom.” It was a fascinating read that would have been even more noteworthy if Benjamin had also examined how our language reinforces this structure and complicity.

The group spent a good deal of time identifying movies that appeared to be about strong female leads, but were still subtly denying the agency of those women. Lyda’s favorite example is “Alien.” She stated that it was a great movie with the first female action-hero right up until “she went back for the damn cat. And then she took her clothes off.” Would James Bond ever go back for the damn cat? No! And would anyone hate him for it? Also no! So why would the female hero who spent not one moment exhibiting any kind of nurturing or sexy characteristics in the previous 114 minutes spend the last two rescuing the cat and taking her clothes off? Lyda, that’s a damn good question. I used to love that movie, and now I am mad. Yes, that’s just the kind of thing I was afraid would happen, but as Lyda said, cut the last two minutes off and it’s still a kick-ass movie, and besides, I got more out of this discussion than I lost. (Also, Bond does tend to at least imply taking his clothes off in the last few moments of his movies too, but it’s really not the same thing.) Afterward, I asked her what her response to ‘Ever After’ was, because ‘Cinderella’ does a heck of a lot of rescuing in that movie, including a very physical rescue of the prince. Lyda hadn’t seen it, but wrote down the information and promised to look it up. I hope we get to discuss her reaction to it someday.

I have been hyper-aware of active vs. passive and subject vs. object for the past 10 days. And this idea has been percolating in my head all this time. This isn’t the newest hypothesis in the world, but maybe the reason I like slash fiction is that the characters are both always the subject. I have heard many times, people explaining their love of slash by saying it’s because the men are more equal than in a female/male relationship. For me, the best, most well-written slash, the stuff that keeps me coming back for more, is the stuff that has both guys in an active mode. They are equals in the relationship. They’re both the subject and they have to trade off. They both are always guys. I can’t abide reading the stuff where one or both of them starts acting like a girl (not even a woman, but a girl). My preference really became apparent when a friend asked me to beta her first slash story last week. There were these weird places where the younger character would go distressingly passive for no reason that would advance the story. And whenever that was happening, there would be tense changes and overly flowery language to accompany it. (Don’t worry, we tracked it all down and stomped it all out before the story was posted. I knew I was on the right track because the author didn’t object to it at all.)

It made me think of Harlequin romances, written ‘for women.’ The language is always flowery and passive. The heroine is always being done to. Ripley and Laura Croft are female action-heroes. They are not action-heroines. Action-heroine is an oxymoron. Heroine is a derivative of hero, just as woman is a derivative of man. According to MJ, the derivative is always considered secondary in importance in language. This is why she says we should say ‘women and men’ from now on, or until it doesn’t matter anymore. This is the final cool new thing I learned in the Sexism panel. You don’t need to say the male part first, because as the root, no matter where it is placed in the order, it will be perceived as most important. Also, whatever comes after the most important part of the order, will automatically be reduced in importance, and thereafter, forgotten. So, if you place the derivative first, you elevate its importance to nearly equal that of the root, and then they are heard and remembered equally. Always saying “women and men” is simple, eye-opening, and subversive, in the best possible way, but it is certainly not easy to implement. I think it will be worth the effort though. Call it part of my ‘conscious commitment to equality and freedom.’

I’m not sure the panelists actually answered the questions in the blurb, but I don’t care. It was a great panel.

[profile] thisisbone is the first slash author I ever read, lo those many (7?) years ago.  She brought us the delightfully eye-opening "Two-Player Game" starring Danny Rydell, Casey McCall (SportsNight) and Stacy Kerr (volleyball fame).  It was a lovely first-time story for a first-time reader, and it still fills my heart with love and glee.  I remember thinking, "of course they'd be together."  She totally sold me on Dan/Casey.  Also, this is actually the only story I've ever saved to my hard drive permanently.

Then, when being pimped into Due South, I learned that Bone had already been there.  Well now.  Benton Fraser and Ray Kowalski and her collaboration with Aristide on  The Better Angels (something I found myself rereading frequently for awhile).  Or, even better:  The Course.  Yowza!

Then there was the thing with the pudding cups (SGA) which isn't even her best work, but it's hilarious and then it warms up. ;)

And now!  dammit!  I have resisted SPN (Supernatural) for a very long time, but today I needed a break, and Bone was happy to oblige.  She's been throwing a series of snippets at [profile] yin_again for her birthday, and all I can say is, go here if you're at all in the mood to melt your brain.  She crossed SPN with Friday Night Lights (neither of which I watch).  Two sets of brothers, and the older of one pair gets together with the younger of the other, who turns out to be Dean's "latest, youngest, and apparently greatest lay."  Not nearly 'nuff said about that, but I'm just a;llsdjasdijdk over here.

Another thing I'll say about Bone - for the longest time I was convinced she was one of those rare male slash writers.  Her men are really men.  They aren't stupidly or artificially feminized. They are believable men.  Not even when she indulged in that genderfuckery in SGA did she lose the very male flavor of her writing.  I've got a lot of experience with men in my life, and I guess Bone does too, because her guys are familiar.  I like that alot.

She also likes college basketball and Ace Young ::hee::  Go, Tarheels!

I almost never write, so I figure if I do write something, maybe I should post it...  This was just a spur of the moment comment fic for [personal profile] texasbekinspired by her post of April 15.  She mentioned there's no boy-boy action on her parenting blogs, LOL.

Ray surveyed the play area with narrowed eyes. Where the hell was his favorite block? Aha! It was being carefully placed at the top of that Benton-boy's impressively high tower. Well. That was just too bad for little Benton, because Ray wanted his block back *now.*

"ugh." The sounds of blocks crashing down around them was as satisfying as riding his trike full speed down the driveway.

"Give it back! Give it Back! GIVE IT BACK!!"

"Give what back, Ray? Why did you knock me over, Ray? That wasn't very polite, you know."

"Give it back, or I'll, I'll..." Ray cast about wildly for the worst thing he could think of. "I'll kick you in the head!"

"Boys! Stop that right now!"

"Aww, Stella. You're no fun."

plus? Bek made me this icon a long time ago, and it is totally appropriate for the story!

Speranza has done it again, totally wowing me with her writing virtuosity.  Wake is an amazing (short) piece about buyer's remorse.  You know the kind, where you've decided you really really want something, and you beg, cajole and wheedle your partner into agreeing to let you have it, and then in the middle of getting it, you realize that maybe you didn't quite think it through.  Maybe you didn't really want this at all. Maybe you're an idiot.  Maybe you've ruined everything.  If you're very lucky, you'll survive the experience, and gain more wisdom than pain from it, but it's not likely, bub.  You've screwed up.

It is set Stargate:Atlantis universe, but you don't really have to know the show or the characters to get this one.  It's just that real and pertinent.  I have some experience with this scenario, and let me tell you, the potential for it ending badly is huge, no matter which player you end up being.  Speranza takes care of all of her players with a lot more compassion than I ever mustered in RL, but it still hurts.  It's a very good read.

She also tackled the topic with her usual grace and humor in "Some Strange Prophecy" which is dueSouth-based, and much, much longer.  It's really a cameo within the larger story, instead of being the story itself.  If you are so inclined, you can find it by using the shiny new links in my sidebar.

<---- over there.

You have to understand that I was predisposed to like this show.

I love Aaron Sorkin's work, but... )
I guess I'll just sit back and enjoy this series for as long as I can.  You can join me on Monday nights.  I'll be chuckling and giggling and wildly impressed with the writing and the derring-do.  Plus, the guest hosts and musicians, ala Saturday Night Live are really fun too.  It's cool to see real celebs interacting with the fictional characters.  I loved the Sting appearance!

After dinner at the Dane, I came home to my flist and found Patience is a Virtue by [personal profile] 30toseoul, which is OMG Scorching! and I know a couple of my pervy friends will appreciate it mightily (yes, B, this means you too).  I just have to say, I usually avoid new-to-me writers like the plague, but [personal profile] 30toseoul totally won me over with her first couple of posts, and now I'm just a pavlovian mess anytime I see her name pop up on my flist.  This woman can bring the HAWT.

This is the first of my ten "G" words from [profile] barley52  I don't seem to be cut out for this meme, because I can't get enough of these together to make a decent post.  But "guh" is exactly how I felt reading these.  Before you click though, this is a series of short stories by rebecca, with McKay/Sheppard (Stargate:Atlantis for the uninitiated) as the pairing.  You'll have to scroll up slightly to get the links to the earlier parts.

What we have here is a slowly building D/s scenario.  It's nothing heavy, although the subject of the latest installment, "The Sum of All Parts," is not really my thing.  But. There is this amazingly detailed psychological aspect that just grabs me.  BDSM has frequently caught my attention, in a "what is that all about?" kind-of-way.  On and off, over the years, I've pondered the nature of the D/s relationship, why it works, why it draws people in, and I've rarely come up with any lasting or satisfactory answers.  I've kind of left it at "it is what it is."  "Truth Table" is a kind of revelation.  Only, it didn't reveal anything I didn't already know, on a gut level, about my own inner workings.  The revelation comes from the fact that someone wrote this in a way that unfolds perfectly and logically.  If you don't get it after reading this, you're not going to get it.

I've rarely run across a story that fleshes out the psych aspects this clearly.  Every time I do, I have an "aha" moment.  Truly, BDSM has to be all about what's going on inside the brain.  Sure, there are sensory aspects, the sights, the sounds, the physical sensations, and they're attractive in different ways, and fun on their own.  People wouldn't do so much with the trappings if they weren't having fun.  But make no bones about it, you don't need any of that stuff to take the trip into that headspace.  What you do need, is a partner who can take you there.  How special is it to find someone that knows you and your needs well enough to accomplish this?  So, a heartfelt GUH.

I just read Consider the Lilies of the Goddamned Field by Nifra Idril, and it was pretty darn good. Most of my flist won’t even bother with it because it’s due South and it’s slash. But I figured with a title like that, I had to read it because 1) It is already perfect Ray Kowalski voice, and B) I can totally get behind the sentiment. The story is more of a think piece, and while sex is referenced, it’s not really a part of the actual action. But Ray gets his Mountie in the end (figuratively, sheesh). So it’s all good. And I think “consider the lilies of the goddamned field” is going to become one of my mantras.

You know what I miss? )

OMG!  Last night's WAT was hysterical.  Did they get a guest writer or director or something?  Someone whose super-secret-hobby is writing slash!crack!fic maybe?

Jack blushing over the lavender tie.
The new girl acting 12 with her flippy ponytail.
"All I know is some crazy lady paid me 50 bucks to get her out of her apartment..." And that scene with him doing it was priceless! "Get in here and push me out the door!"
'Charlie's Angels' ordering espresso - "I'll have Latte." "Cappucino." "Double."
Hiding in Lane 5!!
Rock-Paper-Scissors!!!! ROFL  Danny: "It's an FBI thing."  (They have never, ever done that before.  Jack and Danny take their jobs way too seriously.)
Jack, the psychologist:  "You've got to be the worst agoraphobic in the world." "You're only in there because you can't figure out how to tell your girlfriend you like her."
"I've never been a lesbian before."
"Neither have I.  Although, I did have this dream.... never mind."  :::splutter, choke, snorfle:::
"Open the lanes." Upon which the cops, the agoraphobic, the lesbian and the mafia dudes all decide to have a bowling party!!!  Fantastic.
And finally - the best scene EVAH - Jack and Danny singing ...That's Amore!  And then doing the parts "Ding-a-ling-aling"  "Ring-a-ling-a-ling" and the shoulder bumping, and the grinning.
And Jack decides to wear the lavender tie.

:::wiping tears of laughter off my face:::
fullygoldy: Ben & Ray in Canada (Someday)

I got to see this last night with a group of women I know, and I really enjoyed it.  Damn, I hadn’t realized just how pretty Jake Gyllenhall is – he’s got the freaking eyelashes of doom!! (Sorry Nathan Fillion, you've met your match.)  They are preternaturally long, I’m tellin’ ya.  And yeah, Heath Ledger is pretty too, and probably more my typical type, looks-wise.  The female characters were just the right amount of pretty for their parts, Alma being plainly pretty with no artifice, Lureen being prettily, but not overly made-up in her youth, and then aging in a typically southern way, trying to hold onto that youth by become ever more peroxided and made-up (I’m intrigued by Anne Hathaway now, having only ever seen her in fluff).  The daughters resembled each other and their parents enough to be believable.  Ennis’ 2nd female partner looked the part of the beer-maid, but as she was an original character (meaning she was added to the story, not part of the written version), I couldn’t really figure out her more than initial attraction to Ennis.

Of course the scenery was gorgeous, how could it not be?  But I didn’t think it was as much of a backdrop as it could have been.  Lots of the scenes were framed so closely that it didn’t really matter where the tent had been pitched.  The look and the feel of the entire film was authentic though.

wherein goldy gets long-winded )

I’m truly truly grateful that my world isn’t so small and hard and cold.  But I also know that for many people, this is exactly the way of it.  It’s a damn shame that people have to inherit this kind of world, especially here in the 21st century.  I know for a fact that this is still the case, and if you don’t believe me, ask DH what he was doing while I was at the movie.  He was watching American Idol, and one of the hopefuls was a cowboy from a ranching town, population 4.  His family was the entire population, and he was very nervous during his audition.  Do you know why?  It was the first time he’d ever been off the ranch.  Anyway, life is too short as it is.  Why do we put up with it being hard and unhappy too?  Or maybe, if it is so hard, it’s a relief that it’s short.  Either way, it’s a sad way to be, and I try to fight my way out of that box every day.  I’m also grateful that I can make that choice, that I know it IS a choice.  Ennis didn't have that.

AU Goldy

I was talking to my project superintendent yesterday about engineering and such, and he said that he decided to get out of engineering and into the trades because he had such a hard time with trigonometry.  He had finally managed to grasp some calculus, but couldn’t hack the trig.  Now the funny thing about this is that what helped him get a working use of calculus was his physics courses.  Why is this funny?  Because he loved the physics, was so fascinated and challenged by it, that he had to learn the math to keep learning the physics.  This is exactly how I became an “A” student in calculus.  I was really frustrated by everything mathematic beyond geometry.  I couldn’t figure out why I needed to know this stuff until my first physics class (senior year of HS), and then I started seeing the connections.  The physics was really interesting, so I signed up for more of it in college, and that meant more math too. ::sigh::  I never did learn to love the math for itself, but it became much easier to get through the classes when I could recognize a new concept or tool as being directly useful in helping me to describe something physical.

Sometime late in my sophomore year, or maybe early in my junior year, I actually did the research to see what it would take to pick up a physics minor along with my major.  As it turned out, it wouldn’t really take all that much, except that it would extend my stay at Chico State by a full year. Now this was the period of time when it started to be common to take 5 yrs to get your undergrad degree, so I totally could have gotten away with it.  In fact, my best friend and roommate did.  But I was the first in my family to even attend a 4-yr college, and I really really wanted to get out into the world. So the prospect of tacking on another year was just totally unappealing. I went back and forth on it for a month or so, and finally, wistfully, I gave that idea a pass. This is what I was remembering as I drove home from the site last night.  I never had the temperament to be an engineer, but I definitely had the scholarly temperament.  I could easily have double-majored or done that exotic physics minor, if I had been more willing to stay on campus.  And I know that the one extra year would have extended even further eventually.

I have to wonder what I’m doing now in the universe where I stayed in school.  For sure I did not move to SC to be with my then fiancé.  Which means I never met DH, or had Mavis and Rupert in my life.  Although there is at least one kid.  I never considered not having kids.  I probably don’t live in Wisconsin, which means I never met probably 90% of my flist.  However, it’s highly possible that I still managed to meet [livejournal.com profile] cfxjosh  and [livejournal.com profile] leathermines .  It’s just that we met at a sci-fi convention instead of a polyamory support group.  I can see me with two geeky boyfriends, and taking much longer to acknowledge that a geeky girlfriend would also float my boat (if I ever caught that particular clue-bus).  If I never left CA, I can totally see me working at SLAC.  The funniest part about that would be that I’d be the 2nd generation female in my family to work there!  My mom serviced the DEC mini-computers in the tunnel in the late 70s.  As for hobbies, I might well have kept playing violin (I quit in college to take up weight lifting with the afore-mentioned fiancé).  I’m probably more of a wine snob and less of a beer snob.  I probably would have still found my way to slash fiction, but it would have been through the sci-fi connection again instead of poly.  In fact, look at my fandoms:  X-files, Star Trek, CSI, SG1, SGA, Firefly, LOTR, Harry Potter.  Sci-fi and fantasy all the way, LOL, except for my first love, SportsNight.  How weird is that?

Let’s see.  I’m still living somewhat near my mom, and she’s probably spending more holidays with me than with my sister (not all the imagined differences are better…).  I probably make more money, but have a lower standard of living.  The Bay Area is expensive!  Hmmm… I assume I would have been living there during the major earthquake of ’89.  My friend Suzy was working in SF at the time of the quake and she said getting home that night was straight out of “Escape from New York.”  If I don’t have a technical job, I’m probably living and teaching in Chico.  I almost stayed there anyway, with a certain red-head named Randy that, hey!  I didn’t list as my favorite red-head in that meme a few days ago.  Hmm.  He was a poly-wired guy, back before we knew what poly was.  So maybe I’d have to amend my romantic life to include one geeky guy and one pretty cool and macho guy (who was also quite smart).  But I don’t think his then girl-friend would have survived the arrangement.  I probably spend as much time as possible hanging out with Helena and Bob, up near Paradise.  In fact, they’re also part of my chosen family, instead of long-distance friends that stay in touch once a year.  They’re that universe’s version of [livejournal.com profile] bzdchris  and [livejournal.com profile] busman1994 .  I can’t decide what I look like though.  Staying in CA, I’d probably have clung to the long, blonde and tan look.  But I’m pretty practical, and I hated touching up my roots when it finally came to that, which is>why I’m no longer so blonde in this universe.  I don’t know though.  I don’t seem to have enough imagination to flesh out this AU version of Goldy, who isn’t even called Goldy.  She might still be called ‘Ski’ by a very few, and also ‘Robbie.’  But not ‘Baby.’  heh.  Hated that even before the universe branched off.

Well.  It was interesting to think about, but don’t get me wrong.  I’m happy with the path I chose in this universe.  It’d be cool to meet alternate-goldy, but I don’t really want to be her.
