fullygoldy: McKay's got a Headache (Stay In Bed)
Trip Report:  Irving/Las Colinas, TX (not bad, some good pics, BBQ)

Trip Report: Ft Lauderdale/Miami Stadium (relaxing, luxurious, and pretty. Nice stadium, except Jumbotron was annoyingly cluttered, good food)

Trip Report: Kennedy Space Center/Cape Canaveral (OMG so amazing, I was teary-eyed all day, but Debby delayed the Delta launch til the day after we left)

Movie Reviews:  Have now watched all the pre-Avengers movies in this order:  Captain America, Thor, Iron Man 1 & 2, Hulk.  Am still working on getting to the theater for the Avengers experience.  DH and the girl watched them all with me, and we all enjoyed them.

Music Reviews:  I can has the newest releases from Adam Lambert and Kris Allen (Adam's has a much more consistent theme/feel this time, but it hasn't grown on me yet, Kris' has had a lot more play in my car. They've both matured nicely.)

Fic Reviews:  [personal profile] hoosierbitch , [personal profile] autoschediastic , [personal profile] devildoll , [personal profile] dira , [personal profile] severina , [personal profile] rivers_bend , you are all my new favorites!  Even if you were old favorites.  Even when you write vampire fic (!) in fandoms for which I have no canon (you know who you are), or generally any fic for which I have no canon background.  Also, babyfic will never be the same.

All Star Game:  NL, you are the bomb!

What part of "I'm a Construction Manager, not an Engineer" did you not understand? The hilarious adventures of the clueless head-hunter.

How being a mom to a 22 yr old woman looks from this side, or, I think I did/I'm doing OK (not so sure about the boy though-apparently knowing "what boys like" doesn't prepare you to mother them).

The car:  $700 later, it will probably last another 2 yrs.  Replacement is pretty much picked out - Subaru Outback.

Why does all the expensive shit happen the same month the property taxes are due? Our bi-annual descent into cash-poor panic.

To relo, or not to relo: I miss my family, but they are starting to decentralize. Now what?  Plus, I love my city, even if I hate the current regime.  Concerts on the Square and Farmer's Market, how are you so awesome?

Book review: The Power of Full Engagement, Managing Energy, Not Time, Is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal, by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz - I have thinky thoughts I havent thunk yet.

Health: not bad, but I've become a couch potato.  How do I get back off the couch?

That's just the ones I haven't started.  There are also a few WIPs. Is it any wonder I don't write fic?

I did my usual weekend chores early this week, starting the laundry on Friday, and making sure it was done well before noon today.  I worked some yesterday (4-5 hrs) on the stupid stuff that never gets done, so it won't be cluttering my to-do list in the coming week.  I felt all smug about this until I realized I didn't have a whole lot to do *today* (I still have to balance the checkbook and pay the 1st of the month bills though).

So we went to Target to pick up Moneyball - I can't believe it's on DVD already, we totally meant to see it in the theater.  B & I read Moneyball a few years ago, on a rec from a non-baseball-obsessed friend, and absolutely loved it.  We've recommended the book to so many people; we were pleasantly surprised to see it become a movie.  We'll probably watch that tonight in lieu of the Who the Hell Cares Pro Bowl.

While there, I found the entire Firefly series for $15! It includes 3 unaired eps! I am excite!

Then I decided I should get a tension rod to try out a really neat organizational idea a friend turned me onto.  You put a tension rod in your kitchen cabinet and hang all your spray bottles on it.  We had two baskets corralling all that stuff under the sink, and it wasn't too bad, but this is much better.  I swapped out the baskets for a turntable/lazy susan also.  Everything fits, and you can see exactly what's in there.  I chose the oval shape rod because it seemed sturdier than the round ones, and I also made sure not to pick the size that was at the upper limit of the rod's range.  For a 36" cabinet, getting a rod sized for 22-36" seemed risky.  I opted for the 36-60" rod.  I wanted to double up the rod for strength, so the weight of the bottles won't pull it down or cause it to sag in the middle.  However, now I know that you want the lower end of the range to be something smaller than the nominal cabinet dimension.  We got it in there, but it was a near thing.  The lazy susan was repurposed from another cabinet where it was being underutilized.  I traded one of the under-cabinet baskets for the tray, and I'm thinking it will work much better this way.  So I re-organized two cabinets for the price of one tension rod. \o/

We also needed a few things from the grocery, and I don't know about you, but that always seems to double up on me.  Today, fresh asparagus was on sale for $1.99/lb. That's a great price even "in season" so I got a pound.  When we came home, we worked up next week's menu:

White Chili with Sourdough Baguette
Cornish Hen, Asparagus and Pilaf
Spaghetti with yesterday's marinara, Spinach Salad
Tilapia Filets, Yellow Squash - just have to decide how these will be prepared
Broccoli and Onion Frittata

We'd already invited our friends over for the football game next Sunday, but we suspect we'll be watching more for the new crop of commercials than the outcome.  Even so, we've decided the main dishes on the buffet will be a Souper Bowl of sorts:  New England Clam Chowder vs. Manhattan Clam Chowder.  It will be interesting to see who wins that battle ;)

1) If I'm going to live with a stiff neck and shoulder, I at least want the satisfaction of having gotten them while doing something fun/kinky/naked. ::pout::

2) It's funny how the news that someone I have a teeny-tiny crush on will be at WisCon made my day inordinately better.

3) Sitting at my desk today still sucks.  I'd prefer a nap in the sun.

4) I don't think I'm going to get the fourth WisCon book read before Friday, much less in time for Wed's bookclub discussion.  I'd have a better chance at finishing if I'd actually start it.

The dishes are here! The dishes are here!  LOL, I know it's ridiculous to be this happy about 7 white plates, but this means that we now have 12 of everything:  Dinner plates, Luncheon plates, Dessert/Bread Plates, Soup plates, Salad bowls, Fruit bowls and small Ramekins.  I found plates to match the white Sheffield we already had at Replacements.com.  At first I thought I was only going to find 5 plates there, but those were the "perfect condition" plates.  They had plenty of slightly imperfect plates for us to order the 7 we wanted, and the total bill with shipping was only $82.  The slightly imperfect plates are actually in better condition than our existing plates.  Including the teapot and the saki set, I've spent $224 for what feels like a brand new set of all white fine china.  Pretty good, huh :)  Any other china collected at this point will be funky/weird pieces (although I don't really see a need for egg cups) or colorful serving pieces.

I had to call a co-worker today and the first thing she said to me was "happy almost-welcome to the company" :)  then she said, "I'm so glad we're getting another woman in our group."  Since she's the Regional guy's right hand person, I'm taking this as a fairly strong indication that it's all over but the paperwork.

My feet are cold.  I suppose it's because the building is cold, because the temp is dropping in preparation for the big storm they've been promising us.  I dont' mind stormy weather on the weekend because it means I don't have to drag myself out of the house unless I really want to.

This weekend we'll be putting up the christmas decorations, indoors and out, weather permitting.  I guess we'll be sorry we didn't do it last weekend if the weather gets bad, but we just weren't ready to switch from autumn to winter yet.  Tomorrow will be the day the christmas china comes out of the cupboard.  So we'll have had 2 meals on the complete white set before putting it aside for 31 days. That just means I have something to look forward to in Jan! (besides the new job responsibilities and lower insurance premiums)

And DH and I have plans to see a movie together sometime this weekend.  The last one we went to alone was Serenity...

LJ's new policies on adult content and needing your age verified are kind of annoying.  I'm not sure I'm annoyed enough to quit paying for an upgraded account though.  I did enter my birth year as 1900 in protest.  I'm old enough to see adult content, and I get to skew all kinds of statistical analyses.  That's the best part.

Come on 5:00!!

Lunch Time Drive By

fullygoldy: Caldwell's Un-happy face (Happy Face)
Books to review:  Between Lovers, The Fabric of the Cosmos, and The Bonesetter's Daughter.  All audio too!

Food to review:
ABDC September Dinner - all local all the time
Adventures in Moline - a pub (good beer, uninspired food), a terrible chinese buffet, a "fancy" chinese restaurant, Mom's truck stop, a pub-wannabee, an upscale italian place (way too pretentious but the penne in vodka sauce was delish), and ice in my white wine at the hotel bar.

Party report:  Oktoberfest 21 was low key and lovely

Water damage report:  Day after Oktoberfest, we had the toilet seal in Rupert's bath leak all over our bedroom ceiling.  The plumber said it was missing a plastic ring that buffers the washer.  It's fixed, but the drying equip is still making the bedroom sound like an international prop flight.  Repairs to the wall & ceiling will come soon, I hope.

Kids:  Homecoming festivities occupied them last week, now they're back to being typical teens - slacking on chores and fighting with each other.  I believe Mavis is suffering from PMS, I know *I* am.

DH:  First session of physical therapy today - wore him out.  Lots of exercises to do before going back in 3 wks.  Tomorrow, I'm accompanying him to a full day of appointments.

Work:  Meh.  Don't know why I even bothered with Moline this week - the PM was on site nearly the entire time I was there.  the Madison job is coming down to the wire.  Nobody is screaming at each other yet, so that's good.

Weight:  All time HIGH.  ARggh.

Creative stuff:  uh.  yeah.  what?

Thinky thoughts:  3+ hrs of driving twice a week plus the solitude of a hotel room allows for lots of thinking.  Unfortunately, I have yet to put pen to paper, or electrons to screen, as it were.
fullygoldy: Josh Lyman S'up? (Josh Sup)

If you put M&Ms into a half-empty tin of Altoids Dark Chocolate Dipped Mints, teh M&Ms will take on a minty flavor!

I'm finding that I like Mavis as a person very much.  Of course, I already love her very much as a daughter, but it's heartening to know that she's a person I'd want to know anyway. (I think Rupert is finding his way to this place too, but it seems slower because he's a boy *and* she's had a 3 year head start).

Almost, but-not-quite catching a cold is good in two ways - the not catching the cold way, and the giving yourself permission to take the day (afternoon/evening) off way.  Also, DH's cold tea kicks ass! And colds!

Finding Fat Tire Amber in the supermarket in Joliet almost makes up for having to sit here alone in my undies (or should I say 'small pants'?) drinking it. It also goes well with salad bar salad and minty M&Ms.  Dinner of champions. What?

Although I would love to have read HP7 all in one go, we're only at chapter 21 now.  First the boy read it, then the girl, then I finally started reading it aloud to DH.  I won't be the last to read it either - our copy is already promised to the neighbors.  My voice doesn't last more than 2 chapters at a time, so the most we'll do in a day is 1-2.  With me being out of town 3 days/week, it's really slowing us down.  OTOH, he says he prefers the way I read it to the idea of getting the audio book.  I try to do some voices, but nothing major, and I do try to get some of an English lilt into the phrasing - years of watching BBC and now listening to podfic made by foreign fans helps me get the emphasis on the right syl-la-ble. heh.

I've been having a lot of kissing dreams lately - at least once a week.  Just dreams of sweet sweet kisses.  I wake up all smiley from them.

See those shoes?  With the lacy socks?  Do you remember when wearing that combo was the height of fashion? (It was the cheesy part of the '80s)

Recently, I mentioned something about wearing that combo, and most of the people around me acted like they had NO CLUE what I was talking about.  Like they'd never seen anyone do it before - at least not in real life.  And I said "don't you remember the girls from the ZZ Top videos?"

This icon is just to prove that I'm not crazy.  Women dressed like that on purpose.  Usually they did it when going out to party or hook up.  And for what it's worth - even though I'm short, I had great legs back then.  I was teh HAWT in those 'knock-me-down-and-fuck-me' shoes with the lacy socks and the appropriately short skirts.  I have a couple of pictures still hanging around - I'll see if I can dig them up and post them here for proof.

Isn't it interesting, that for the most part I think of myself as a klutz, but I've got no problem bopping around in those heels?!

Catching up

I guess LJ is feeling guilty after eating my last post.  Since then, every time I've started a new post, it's asked if I want to retrieve my "last saved draft."  I always hit yes just to see what it's got, and it's my rant about the autosave not working! LOL

Last weekend we had an out of town guest, K from SC.  It was a lovely long weekend, with way too much food and drink, and some nice snuggling and also too much heat and humidity.  It was very relaxing, and [profile] barley52 is working on tempting K up here permanently ::g::  Of course I chimed in with at least $.05 about potential places of employment.

On Saturday, Rupert accompanied us to the Farmers Market and brunch, because afterwards, we were heading to State Street, and he's been dying for a new pair of Chuck Taylors.  He wanted purple plaid, but we couldn't find them anywhere on the internet.  There's a great shoe place on State Street that always has Chucks in the window.  Well, they had a problem with sizes - lots of cool models in really large sizes, but not in Rupert's fairly standard size.  So he ended up with Vans instead.  They're a kelly-green and white houndstooth.  I think they're way cool, and he looks so teen-aged in them :)  What a shock it was to realize in the past couple of weeks that Rupert is now taller than Mavis.  Not by much, but there is a 3-yr age gap.  So I'm back to being the shortest person in the house.

Sunday, we stopped by the Monona Farmers Market to see Farmer John, and K picked up some lovely things to take home.  Then we went for breakfast at the Bourbon Street Grille, which is the two-story restaurant overlooking the Yahara.  Great food, great dining porch.  We're definitely going back some evening for the rooftop music & bar.  Heaven!

Well, we're off for the weekly poking.  See ya later.

Last night, DH & I hung out on the patio of our favorite watering hole, and visited with all the staff and several customers. It's probably one of the few times we've ever interacted with other customers, LOL. Anyway, towards the end of the evening, a charming and attractive man who turned out to be in his early 30s assumed I was his age. ::g:: You should have seen his face when I said I was 42!

This morning, slightly hungover and headache-y, we went grocery shopping. DH wandered off while I was in the checkout line. The checker took one look at me and asked,

"may I see your ID?"

before he even began unloading my cart (2 six-packs, a bottle of wine and an experimental "box wine" because we've been hearing good things about the new products).

"Aren't you sweet?!" I reply, as I pull my wallet out of my purse. He looks at my ID and looks at me, and goes, "Oh. Okay." as he's turning a delicate shade of red.

Yes!! That totally made my day, and I made sure to let him know I appreciated the compliment. Apparently, I've still got it.

fullygoldy: Yellow Roses (diary_CKR)

I was going to post this last week, but knowing my flist, I was pretty sure a couple people (you know who you are) would take this post as an invitation, and really, I wasn't quite in that mood.  So....

I have always preferred sleeping with company.  When I was a kid, I slept with all my stuffed animals.  This became problematic when I had more stuffed pets than bed.  At that point, I singled out a stuffed Snoopy that always kept me company, and I rotated through the rest.  Except that on xmas eve, I'd pile everyone in the bed with me - special occasion, ya know?  Man, did I love that Snoopy.  His poor skinny neck gave out pretty early, so his head always drooped.  But he was soft and fairly squishy all over, so I didn't really care much.  He went to college with me (along with a couple of bears).  When I graduated, I finally gave him up.  Left him at the local Goodwill donation site, with a bunch of other stuff I didn't want to move.  I almost didn't leave him.  There he was, in all his gray glory, carefully arranged on top of my other stuff, and I was back in my car with my real, live puppy.  I opened the door of the car, and almost got out to retrieve him, but talked myself out of it.  I had this idea that a cum laude college grad shouldn't be sleeping with a woobie any more.  Silly me.

Right before I got together with DH, I bought a new queen-sized bed.  It was bigger than any bed I'd owned and it was exactly the right firmness.  I loved that bed.  I slept with extra pillows though.  When DH moved in, we kept my bed and got rid of his king-sized waterbed.  I can't sleep in those, so he had to get used to less real estate.  We kept my bed until about 4 or 5 years ago.  DH had been bugging me for a couple of years to upgrade to king size, and we finally had the house that would allow for it.  I kept saying no, because really, who needs all that bed?  I can see it if you're 6 ft tall or fairly wide, or regularly sleep more than 2, but come on!  We're both far less than 6 ft and we like to spoon.  What would we do with the extra space?  Also, at the time he brought it up, I was spending a lot of time on the road for work, and for some reason, hotels think they're giving you better service if they put a single person in a king-sized bed.  If I already hate sleeping alone, why would I want to do it in a football field?!  Anyway, back to the upgrade.  DH was able to convince me that it was time, because we were suddenly hosting an extra sleeper on a pretty regular basis.  So the 3 of us trooped off to the mattress stores on a fine weekend day, and raised a lot of eyebrows by climbing on all the beds together.  We used to tease about the bed having its own zip code, LOL.  The bed has lasted longer than the relationship that inspired it though.

So now, we spoon in the middle of a king-sized bed, and I have a king-sized pillow that I put between me and the edge (I've always liked being in the middle too).  But last week was pretty darn tough.  I am very very happy that I have my "bedwarmer" back home with me.  I was sleeping in the middle of the bed with both king-sized pillows on each side of me, wearing long jammies, thick socks and smothered by a down comforter.  And here's the kicker - I was still cold!  I can't sleep when I'm cold! I hate sleeping alone!

Well, I feel like I've been writing meeting reports continuously this week, so even though in my head I've got at least 3 LJ entries written, I'm not gonna write them tonite.  In summary:

No weight change. It's December, and even though I should be glad the number isn't going up, I'm bummed it isn't going down.

Subaruby!! Brought the new baby home on Wed, and have to get the borrowed transportation back to [livejournal.com profile] cfxjosh  and [livejournal.com profile] leathermines. Thanks you guys! You rock! We are once again a 2-car family, with a '01 Subaru Legacy as the newest member of the family. Say sayonara to the year of the car.

The Gay and Lesbian Business Alliance has named 'My Caterer' their official caterer! Tuesday was a big success and moreso because of the skills and talents of [livejournal.com profile] cfxjosh and [livejournal.com profile] leathermines. See above. How cool is it that a professional cake decorator decided to stay till the mini creme puffs were served, and then pronounced them delightfully light and airy?! There were actual groans of appreciation as [livejournal.com profile] barley52 carried them to their pedastal. It's been such a long week that I fear my spelling sucks....

There's been some amazing writing and reccing on my flist this week, and I've tried to keep up, but I've had limited time.

Got my first 2 weeks of pay from the new job too. Bank account is very happy.

Installed shelves and a bulletin board, a cordless phone and a shiny new laptop in my job trailer. Too bad said laptop came with nothing but Lotus Notes installed. Took all week to straighten it out, and am still missing Project. But, things are definitely coming into focus on the job.

Tonight, I recycled the leftover scallop ceviche as scallops in cream. Heavy cream in a light roux flavored with tarragon. Drain the scallops, add to the cream, heat through and serve over angel hair. The tanginess of the lime in the scallops played nicely against the richness of the cream. Had a glass of german riesling on the side. Served myself seconds, then couldn't even take a bite. There's one dish waiting in the fridge for DH. It was all his fault to begin with ::g::

So that's the week in review.

fullygoldy: Goldy's Ray is Ray K (GR)

Since we're doing a big non-traditional dinner production on Saturday, with our chosen family, we decided to do a smaller version of traditional T-day at home yesterday.

[livejournal.com profile] barley52 talked about breakfast and such, so here is the dinner menu:

We split a bottle of our traditional beaujolais nouveau in the early afternoon, and while cooking.

DH brined a 7 lb turkey breast for about 4 hours and then stuffed fresh sage under the skin before roasting for 2 hours.  While that was happening, he also roasted fresh chestnuts, some in the oven (which exploded and had to be vacuumed out with a dustbuster, and some in the fireplace (which turned out far more successfully).

I made oyster and chestnut dressing thusly:  diced a small loaf of sourdough into small cubes and mostly dried out in the oven.  Chopped one stalk celery and one small onion into small dice, and minced 2 garlic cloves and a few leaves of fresh sage.  The veggies were sauteed in 3 Tbl. butter until soft, then a full pint of coarsely chopped oysters and about 1.5 cups of coarsely chopped chestnuts went in the pan.  Stirred in about 6 cups bread cubes, and made sure everything was moistened.  Filled the casserole with the dressing and dotted the top with butter.  This baked alongside the breast for the last hour of roasting.

We had the traditional southern congealed cranberries in jello (with orange and nuts), and also ambrosia salad made by DH.  He used oranges, tangerine, pomegranate seeds, coconut and butter toffee covered walnuts.  No alcohol, but the butter toffee mixed with the juices to taste vaguely of liqueur.

Veggies consisted of mashed potatoes with garlic, onion and sour cream, and deep-fried okra with a horseradish-dijon sauce.  I realize that doesn't seem like much in the way of veggies, but we did have 2 kinds of fruit salad, and we all ate large helpings of each.  So there.

And of course there was gravy, from the drippings and chicken broth, more sage, and pepper.  I had to thicken it twice, but it was nice and light and went great on the turkey, potatoes and dressing.

We served gewurztraminer with dinner.

Dessert was a fudgy (overcooked, alas) brownie with caramel crunch ice cream and caramel sauce.

After dessert, we went to a 9:15 showing of Goblet of Fire.  Wow.  Pretty good job, but I guess even with over 2 hours of run time, some stuff is going to be left out.  I knew it was going to be "dark" but I thought it was interesting that the entire tone of the film was dark - even the brighter, happier scenes seemed to have a pall hanging over them.  I wasn't so impressed with Sirius in the fireplace, seemed like a knock-off of an old Star Trek Original or TNG special effect.  I think they've mostly done an amazing job with casting - the film characters almost always look like I imagined them, except I don't think they got Fleur right.  She wasn't blonde or luminous enough.  She really should have had coloring more like a Malfoy.  My god, can the twins and Ron look any more alike?  And their hair!  They've all got this Shawn and David Cassidy thing going on!  LOL, they are totally gangly, growing teens.  Cho's accent was a bit odd, but hey, I'm guessing fairly authentic for where she's supposed to live.  I'm not sure Emma Watson's acting has improved all that much.  The stuff with Viktor seemed realistic, but her final scene was a bit overdone.

Before the movie, we saw a trailer for King Kong, and man, is Peter Jackson busy or what?  He's single-handedly recreating hollywood over in NZ.  I wonder when we're going to start seeing red-carpet events held there?

And happy, happy news:  My new Keds, which have been missing for 3 weeks were finally found today by dear Mavis.  Don't ask me how they ended up in the basement under a slip-covered chair, because if I knew, I would have found the damn shoes myself!  Now if I could only find that unopened pack of white silk longjohns I bought the same day as the Keds, I'd be a totally happy camper.

I hope everyone had a wonderful, relaxing and delicious thanksgiving day.
