Thanks to brdgt, I can do this:

So,  I realized yesterday, that while I do love The Clash, I probably know more of The Kinks (therefore love them more), yet  I have NO Kinks music in my personal library.  This is problematic.  I  am likely to be ordering Kinks music in the next 24 hrs.

Also, USA Swimming is the most AWESOME thing evAR.  Totally, FREAKING, awesome.  It's not just MP.  Additionally, I should stop drinking now.  I'm at 6 beers and 2 vodkas for the day.  Typing is becoming ever more challenging.

However, I"m still not someone who is going to read/write RPS on a regular basis.

And I think someone should get out a videocam and record a certain FM counting to ten in a whisper.

I'm going to have to give in and name my internal DJ.  I think "Dr. Demento" is apt.

This morning, I awoke to "The Holly and the Ivy."  The George Winston version. ::headdesk::  For the past two days, it's been Jack Johnson's "Bubble Toes."  At least that has a good reason, even if it's not my favorite of his. Huh, I'm not sure I've got a favorite, I just generally like him.  Anyway, last week I finally acquired his first CD, so the fact that I've been mainly listening to it during my commutes to MLW, explains the perpetual repeat.

But "The Holly and the Ivy?"  I've got no idea why.

Back at school today, and this afternoon, I was delighted to arrive during a music class in which (probably) 4th graders were enthusiastically singing Bohemian Rhapsody!   \o/

I don't care that it's 30 yrs old - that's freakin' awesome man!

Also, two new names for the list:  Xzaiver, and Kaizyn.

New "Car" Music

Monday, October 15th, 2007 03:08 pm
fullygoldy: Bass Player midriff (Bass)

I had to go get car music again. I haven’t been proactive enough to request audio books I want to listen to, and my car music was getting too repetitious. Car music has to be something I can sing to, something upbeat, or something loud, or you know, all three. All three is best.

Because my formative music years were the 80s, I got:

The Best of Blondie – and I knew all but 2 of the songs.
The Best of ZZ Top – 10 Legendary Texas Tales, which included neither “Sharp Dressed Man” nor “Legs,” go figure. I only recognized 2 tracks of this one.

Because I am a fangirl, I got my third fandom-related purchase:

Johnny Cash – Greatest Hits (for SGA and John Sheppard). Also, my father played Johnny Cash throughout my childhood, so I already knew most of the songs.

The first time I got music because my BSO liked it was Tom WaitsUsed Songs (SportsNight’s Dan Rydell). This was entirely new music to me, and I enjoyed Tom’s gravelly voice, even though this isn’t actually good car music. The second time I selected music based on my BSO, I got The Clash, because RayK of due South is a headbanger and so am I – again with the Greatest Hits (yes, I’m lazy). Ray is also a champion ballroom dancer, and I love Swing too, so he had to be my fave in the F/K OTP. Actually, out of all my fandoms, the character I’ve stayed the most resolutely devoted to is Ray K. The others are pretty to look at, but Ray is complex. ::fangirl sigh::

Because I am a rocker chick, I also picked up a DVD of a 1989 live performance of The Who’s “Tommy” with special guest appearances by Phil Collins and Billy Idol. DH, Rupert and I watched this last night. It was fun, it wasn’t overly long, but man, even back in ’89 Townsend’s and Daltrey’s voices were pretty shot. They weren’t out of tune or anything atrocious, but they had no power, and NO range.

Because DH’s formative musical years were the 60s, he picked up:

The Best of The Guess Who. Actually, we have quite a lot of musical overlap, which may explain why we’ve been able to live together this long ;>

So all of the new acquisitions are actually old music, but it seems like all the newer stuff I like is less suitable for driving my car (Norah Jones, John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Mark Knopfler). I still love the “Machines of Loving Grace” CD I got from Ms. Nayad, but I find riding the fine edge of arousal for 3 hrs to be somewhat detrimental to my driving skilz. It makes for a fine homecoming though. I already know the words to my “oldies” which makes them perfect for running down a dream.

Music to Fuck By

Over the weekend I discovered a couple of CDs that I believe I inherited from [profile] nayad. Last year for the holidays, she wrapped up a bunch of interesting stuff – books, magazines, DVDs and CDs that she wasn’t interested in keeping any longer, but were not deserving of the trash heap, and gave out the boxes as surprises. My box yielded some interesting items, and I shared it with [personal profile] roguebitch, who claimed a couple of things too.

So, I rediscovered these two CDs that I had not yet listened to, even though [info]roguebitch said I’d probably like at least one of them, I just can’t remember which one. I figure it won’t kill me to try out new stuff once in awhile, plus, I totally needed new music in my driving lineup because I was getting seriously tired of what I had thanks to 3+ hr drives twice a week for the entire summer. First up was Gilt by Machines of Loving Grace.

Even vanilla sex is hot if you're doing it right )

I think if I had known a little more about these CDs, I’d have chosen to play Doll’s The King of Monster Island first. But, it worked out okay being second, because it gave me a good long cool down before I had to put my game face on and speak to clients and contractors. At an elementary school, no less! Doll turns out to be fairly lively, a single female voice and some energetic guitar work that put me in mind of the Indigo Girls. I caught a few phrases of the lyrics on this one, and I enjoyed them, and got the feeling that a lot of the message was about empowerment.

I’ll definitely be listening to these both again (and again). In fact, I’m kind of kicking myself right now, because I could have been listening to these all summer long, if we’d only reorganized the CD rack sooner.

*super-cooling occurs when a material gets caught at an energy level not normally associated with a phase change, and kind of sticks there for awhile. It would be like water freezing to a solid before reaching zero degrees C, but is more commonly associated with processes taking place on the sub-atomic level. /geek

ETA:  [personal profile] roguebitchpoints out I switched the name of the band and the name of the CD, but it's fixed now!

Getting Organized

This weekend, we got some good work done around the house, but not exactly what I’d planned to accomplish. The basement was refusing to dry out, and the cheapo bookshelves down there were waterlogged at the bottom to the point the uprights actually cracked and started to buckle. So, I boxed up all the books and stored them in the unfinished space (off the floor), in preparation for tearing out the soaked carpet. Yes, carpet and pad can be successfully dried in place, but only with serious tools and I didn’t feel like paying for those services – the carpet isn’t worth as much as the services would have cost. So the boy and I spent a good bit of Saturday hauling carpet out of the basement, and I got all but two loads of laundry washed in the meantime.

Demented DJ

fullygoldy: Caldwell's Un-happy face (Happy Face)

Most of my friends know that I wake up every morning with a song in my head.  I know that makes me sound like a  total pollyanna, but it's not really like that.  I just have this morning soundtrack.  Some days are better than others, some weeks, like this one, are weirder than others.  So far this week:

* Band of Gold (that goes waaay back)
* Even the Losers (Get Lucky Sometimes) - Tom Petty
* Oh Boy - Buddy Holly
* Take a Chance on Me - Abba

And of course the ones that stick for the whole day, the ones I just can't shake no matter what, have to be Band of Gold and Abba. ::shudder::  Usually I can pinpoint when or where the song got inserted into my shuffle, but some days, I've got no clue.  I mean, srsly? Abba?  Usually my trip to work with the radio on drowns out the song of the day, and I can happily go about my business.  But apparently today is Not one of those days.

In other news, I got another haircut - changed the style - and I'm thinking I look rather elegant and chic in my all brown ensemble (silk blouse from Ann Taylor's clearance rack and *brown* patent peekaboo pumps) and my Sharon Stone meets Leisha Hailey 'do.  Unfortunately DH thinks I've got a "broadway-ish Peter Pan thing going on."  Although - Leisha would make an adorable Pan.

Wow, what an amazing Friday!

It all started with lunch.  I went for a late lunch with a friend, and we sat on a patio overlooking the Yahara for two hours, chatting happily about work, food, kids, books, flying dreams, power tools, etc.  The Bourbon Street Grille is a funny little place in Monona, that usually has terrible service and merely edible food, this time being no exception.  It's major draw is that patio.  The sun was high in the sky and the temp was pretty warm, but we were comfortable under our umbrella and loath to leave.   Alas, RL beckoned and we headed our separate ways, which fortunately for both of us did not involve returning to work.

I got home to find that DH and Rupert had already returned from their matinee of the Simpsons Movie.  They enjoyed it at least as much as Mavis did last week.  DH looked ready for a nap, and since I woke up a full hour earlier than I had wanted to, I suggest we nap together.  The AC was running and made lying on the bed with bare skin a lovely treat.  After awhile, we got dressed and headed out for the first Dane Dance of the season at Monona Terrace.

Next week's Dane Dance features Mama Digdowns (N'Awlins brass) and BBI (danceable motown).  Maybe we'll see you there, but we won't be out afterward because next Saturday is the annual Day of Public Drunkenness.  I can't wait!

Dang, I need a Sting icon! SQUEEeeeee!!!!

The Police reunion! Yayayayay! OMG, they so rocked Roxanne, last night and Sting was absolutely delicious - all buff and intense and male and RAWWR... I so wanted to lick those biceps. He is so freakin' HAWT! LOL And Stewart was almost as yummy in his own smushable way, with the wavy hair and the glasses, and the drum sticks. ::sigh:: /end fangirl squee
I only wish we could have had more - maybe Message in a Bottle? Was it really too much to ask? I mean, really, Carrie Underwood? dude. She's sweet and nice, and a good performer, but did we really need three songs from her?

And as long as I'm critiquing the grammys, who the hell thought it was a good idea to put Chris Brown on stage with Smokey and Lionel? He is nowhere near their league. It was a good show, better than last year really, but I could have done with less overblown production and more actual awards presented during the 3.5 hrs. But that's just me.

okay, this is the last time: THE POLICE! On stage together! STING! In full voice! Roxanne! STEWART! Sting's biceps! Sting's hair! Cuddly!Stewart! OMG, teh Awesome!! /end

okay, deep breaths. I'm okay. I'll stop abusing the Caps Lock and the exclamation points now.

Our Town

I have to say it again, "I LOVE our town." It is so SQUARE!

God, I love our town!!  If you ask me, it's as close to heaven as a city can get.

And don't even get me started on next month.  [profile] rougebitch has aptly renamed it "the day of public drunkenness," but it's real name is  "The Great Taste of the Midwest."  The midwest's largest, most popular, most exclusive beer festival, where 5000 or so  beer fiends will descend upon Olin Turville Park and drink themselves silly.  If you didn't get your tickets the first week of May, we won't be seeing you there.  You'd think with these conditions, there'd be fisticuffs galore, but these are the happiest, politest drunks you'll ever meet.  We're all just so damn grateful to be there, tasting the fantastic lagers, ales & meads, thrilled to meet the brewers and hear about their trials and inspiration, delighted to see friends we've made in the past, that we only see here, once a year.  It's another fantastic recurring event hosted in our town, but this one isn't held on the square.

What's not to love? (and hey, that's rhetorical, okay?  don't be killing my buzz in comments today)

Indiana or Bust

fullygoldy: Bass Player midriff (Bass)
Whew! That was tiring! I spent 14 of 30 hours between Wed & Thur driving through the middle section of Illinois and northwestern Indiana. Its 6+ hours each way, so I asked my NBF if I could borrow some books-on-tape from her officially “in storage” library. I selected “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Tracy Chevalier, and “About a Boy” by Nick Hornby. I was really looking forward to them, but the rental car only had a CD player. Drat. I had to content myself with a rock-n-roll retrospective instead.
I have decided though, that I’m going to need new road music, because there is a very good chance I’ll be making this trip monthly. Of course, I’ll still attempt the audio-books thing, and who here doesn’t think that Billy Crystal reading Christopher Moore’s “Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal” would be the most perfect entertainment EVAH?! (Except for the part where you'd drive off the road into a ditch and land upside down because you snorted Red Bull out your nose - Again!)  I wonder how you can make requests for these things? But really, there is no substitute for good road music. Unfortunately, after 20 yrs or so, the shine has kinda worn off of “Bat Out of Hell.” And while I love Elvis to death, I’m thinking The Clash might be more my speed this year. Also, some Blue Oyster Cult (Mirrors), maybe some AC/DC to replace Meatloaf, definitely need to replace my long-lost Donnie Iris (Back on the Streets). Some Rush would be good. And there’s always my Beach Boys anthology. And some Go-gos to mix it up a bit. Also, The Mavericks. Some of these are already on my amazon wish list, but I usually put the more mellow stuff there. I tend to forget to add music to the list anyway – I use my list as more of a “reading” list. But really, it’s time for new music in the car.

Stay tuned for more observations and thoughts from the road...  I've got stuff about food, and small towns and life and and and... truly, you should all be glad I don't make voice posts, LOL.

I was driving down the road today, flipping through the radio dial, and I stopped on what turned out to be the "oldies" station. I had stopped because they were playing Steely Dan.

I demand an explanation!

Music Meme

fullygoldy: Yellow Roses (Default)

Okay, I'm finally going to address this tag, because I love [livejournal.com profile] nayad and don't want to disappoint her, but I'm pretty sure she'll be disappointed anyway.  My music is old and boring and I've been going through a total retro phase anyway lately.

Directions:  List five songs that you currently love.  Doesn't matter what genre, just whatever's grooving you currently.  List titles and artists, then tag five other folks.

Actual songs, huh?

Mostly, I listen to music in the car.  And for most of the summer I've been carless.  When I put music on at home, it's the digital cable stuff, so I have very little control over what I'm hearing.  I usually choose alternative, adult alternative, retro-active, or 80's for somewhat current stuff, but I also put on swing/big band, jazz, smooth jazz, reggae, and salsa y merengue.

What I carry in the car:

1.  Meatloaf - Bat Out of Hell, and the song I like best is probably "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Nights), but I also like "All Revved Up with No Place to Go." (You can't fall asleep to Meatloaf).

2.  The Best of Elvis Costello - "Alison."  Of course, just about everything on the CD is a close second.

3.  Gaia Consort - Gaia Circles - "Move to the Country" is the obvious choice, but I really love "The Old Ones" and "The Rede (An it Harm None)" which are at opposite ends of the emotional spectrum.

4.  Sting's entire body of work.  Currently carrying around Disc 4 of the entire Police output (meaning the last stuff they recorded) and "Sacred Love."

5. Diana Krall - I have no idea which album CD is which anymore, but I love "Do Nothing Till You Hear it From Me," and "Straighten Up and Fly Right."

What I like when it comes up on the radio playlist:

1. John Eddy - LOL, do I know the names of the songs?  There are 2 that I like, maybe "If you're there when I get back," and "the only thing she left was me," but those may be just my favorite lyrics from the songs.

2. Jason Mraz John Mayer - Your Body is a Wonderland

ETA: It bugged me all day, but I finally remembered this song is by the other "JM." sheesh.

3.  Five for Fighting - 100 Years (also, Superman)

4.  The Romantics - What I Like About You

5.  Donnie Iris - Ah, Leah (wonder of wonders, it occasionally crops up on the classic rock station, even though DI was pretty new wave/alternative back in the day).

Who to tag? [livejournal.com profile] shoshannagold, [livejournal.com profile] texasbek, [livejournal.com profile] janissa11 (I probably shouldn't, but she did turn me on to Baltimore Consort ::g::, [livejournal.com profile] roguebitch, and everyone else on my flist has already been tagged.
