fullygoldy: Woman reclining under text block (Queen of Fucking Everything)
  • Woke up this morning from a pretty weird dream. My boss from 10 yrs ago was telling me to be prepared to be assigned to one of two projects happening next year in FL. One was in Pensacola, the other at Ft Bragg (which is actually in CA). But I was still doing my present job for my present company, and the region I work in does not support projects in FL. I am in the "North" region which supports all of Central US and Canada <shaking head>. So geography and personnel aside, the weird thing was that DH was really against the move, temporary or permanent, and also against me "commuting" for it. In RL, DH has stated he'll follow me anywhere at this point, as quid pro quo for the past 7 yrs. His dream attitude though was very similar to his attitude 10 yrs ago. Hmmm-maybe that's why it was the 10 yrs ago boss in the dream. In RL, the furthest away project I'm contemplating now is in Tomah (2 hr drive), so not so bad.
  • Last weekend, after some shopping, we stopped at Vintage Brewing for a snack and a couple pints. I had the Schwarzfahren, a Schwartz or black lager. Very tasty, and much much better than the guest Black IPA from nearby One Barrel Brewing. That Black was an unfortunate example of what-not-to-do with a black beer.
  • While at Vintage, we saw an hour or so of the FIFA Championship Cup. Technically safe for work, but JIC )
  • Also at Vintage, I finally had what my brain has for years been telling me "White Chicken Chili" should be.  This was rich, creamy, delicious chicken meat stewed in a creamy chicken broth, with white beans, and apparently a ridiculous amount of pepper jack cheese melted in to make it creamy and thick.  I am going to figure out how to make this at home.  The bowl was $5 and well worth it (which is not really true of about 90% of the menu.  The food's mostly good, but it's always over-priced in my opinion).  Another "White Chicken Chili" recipe in this town, at a very popular retro-diner, is actually red chili with chicken breast instead of ground or shredded meat. So not what my mouth gets ready for when reading that title.
  • Tuesday is the first day of my week off.  We are driving to Nashville, TN for a family reunion on DH's mother's side.  It's being held at Gaylord Opryland Resort, and I am way too cheap to stay there.  Everything, and I mean everything was ala carte.  Rooms, wi-fi, breakfast, parking, plus the usual taxes, and a $13/day "resort fee" (what's that for? the pool towels or something?").  Instead, we rented a cabin on a lake (in Lebanon, TN) that sleeps 7 for the price of 3 fully expensive nights at the resort, thinking the adult kids in SC would drive up and share.  Nope.  The girl and one of her girlfriends will drive down on Wed night arriving in the wee hours on Thurs, but that's it for the roomies.  We have tickets to hear Alison Kraus at the Grand Ole Opry one night, and two nights (Fri & Sat) are devoted to the reunion.  We plan to visit Antique Archeology, the distillery in the same building, and find super excellent BBQ while there.  Other than that, we'll be laying around the lake soaking up the sun (I hope).
  • Let me ask you: if you were going on a 10-hr road trip, what time would you leave?  I was thinking, since it's vacation, and I'm supposed to be relaxing, that I would like to get on the road between 9 and 10 am, with arrival probably by 8 pm.  This would generally keep us away from any type of rush-hour traffic, morning and afternoon.  DH has announced that he wants to leave at 2 AM to arrive no later than 1 pm on Tues (Originally, I was only going to take off half of Tues).  We were getting irritated with each other this morning while discussing it, so I said, "fine, let's get the car packed up on Monday, and then whatever time you actually feel like getting on the road, we'll get on the road."  I figure it will be closer to 4 am when we leave, but we shall see.
  • I am having technology issues.  Since the last iTunes update, I have been unable to get my music to update. I have new music loaded on my hard drive that I want to put on my phone, but every time it syncs, it only takes all the same music it already had.  This used to be easy.  What the hell am I doing wrong?

Getting ready to head out to the Day of Public Drunkeness aka The Great Taste of the Midwest.  It's already a glorious day, thank you Mother Nature, and I can't wait to spend the bulk of it with 5000 of my closest friends.

We're looking forward to more mead, cider and not-specifically beer offerings than ever before (don't get me wrong, we LOVE the beer)!

This will be year 10 for us volunteering *yay* and year 1 for our oldest to attend.  She's been looking forward to this for a long time :)

Gotta run!
fullygoldy: Animated snow shower over snowman (Snowman)

We had a lovely 4-day weekend.  I banked some extra hours so I could take Fri off too.

Wed. night we made the cranberry jello mold, and prepped pie crust and ate chinese food.

Thursday we lounged around in jammies all day, reading and playing dominoes, watching parades and football, cooking and eating.  There were lots of yummy things from the eggnog pancakes and bacon for breakfast, to 5 kinds of cheese, pate de foie gras, grapes, pistachios, and a fancy relish tray from Whole Food's olive bar for snacks, to Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, oyster dressing, cranberry relish and asparagus for dinner, and finally cherry and pumpkin pies for dessert.  There were also interesting beverages - sparkly juices and Jones soda and wine.  Survivor and CSI were fun things to watch in the evening.  That Hodges is such a geek.

Friday I cleaned and organized a chunk of the basement.  DH and I went to "The Garage Project" on University to see the latest and greatest in organizational systems for your garage and/or basement.  I'm interested in the basement applications.  DH wants to adapt a few items to the kitchen, specifically to his baking center he's dreaming about.  For dinner, we met up with

[profile] bzdchris and [profile] busman1994 at the Dane.  I had 2 strongbow ciders and split the mac n cheese with DH, in addition to sampling some appetizers.  Then we went home just in time to learn Stargate:Atlantis was not airing.  Poo.  Watched half of a SG-1 episode and then retired to the romantically lit bedroom.  The candles cast cool shadows on the ceiling of the leaves of the two trees that are wintering at the foot of our bed.  I could just lie there and stare at the shifting patterns for hours.

Saturday was another relaxing day.  We lounged around all day, with [profile] bzdchris and [profile] busman1994 arriving about 2.  We watched music documentaries, played dominoes and snacked like divas.  We also sampled some "Demolition Ale" from Goose Island - really yum with the Styrian Goldings and Saaz hops. :;sigh::  The boy had a music lesson, so I left the house for exactly one hour on Sat.

Sunday was still pretty quiet, with DH and I discussing plans for rearranging the living room/dining room, and what furniture purchases the plan would require.  We discussed the overall look some more and agreed in principle on many things. :)  Then we headed out for an afternoon of errands and grocery shopping. Heh.  First stop was a furniture store "to get an idea" of what "may be available when we're ready." We ended up purchasing a contemporary Lane recliner with cream leather upholstery for nearly half price.  We didn't want leather.  We didn't want a recliner.  But this was the nicest, most comfortable chair in the store and it was HALF price!  So we sheepishly put the hold on it so we could go swap cars (it wouldn't fit in the Subaru) and pick it up later.  Then we dropped by the mall to redeem our See's candies gift certificates (free chocolate!), and did a light run at the grocery store.  Finally, we took the groceries home and headed back to the store to claim our chair.  While I deboned the leftover turkey, and determined there was enough for my creamed turkey and DH's pot pie cravings, DH spent most of the evening reclining in splendor ;) the rest, he spent petting me.  I was a happy happy girl by the time I closed my eyes for good last night.  There's just something about creamed turkey with peas, a couple of glasses of wine and rampant consumerism, ya know?

This morning started with me realizing that I could easily spend $2000 on furniture at American TV and receive a free 32" Toshiba LCD HDTV.  No one told us about this promotion while we were at the store, which is probably a good thing.  I just have to continue resisting until Saturday when the sale ends.  I don't need to spend $2000 on furniture.  I really really don't.  Yes, I would like to have another one of those chairs, and a set of matching dining room chairs to boot.  But I have other things that are much higher on the priority list.  I am strong. I will resist.

Baltimore Recap

fullygoldy: Sting Performs Roxanne (Sting)

::cue studio announcer:: Previously, in Baltimore Bliss, goldy was on her way to a "low country boil" for Saturday's supper...

Sunday morning, we stopped by Panera for real food because the Ramada's continental breakfast just doesn't cut it.  I had the new caramel apple pastry, and it was good but messy, with caramel sauce dripping through my fingers.  We didn't want to eat too much, because officially, we were meeting up with the baseball gang for "brunch" at Shuckers on the Inner Harbor.  We had to drive in on Sunday because the light rail doesn't start running til 11:00 am and the meetup was at 10:30.

When it's all said and done, I managed to have a pint put out by each of the three local breweries:  Yeungling, Frederick and Capitol City.  I enjoyed all of them, but the Backfin Pale Ale was my favorite - I even brought home an empty for the souvenir shelf.  The most memorable moments for me were the oyster lunch and dinner in Annapolis, but it was all fun.  I'm glad we got to go.

Also, even though I thought many times over the weekend that I'd like to investigate living there - the traffic situation alone would keep me from wanting to make the move.  Way too many cars on the road.  The lanes seem narrower than here at home, and the curves are sharper - I'd hate to negotiate them during winter.  The parking is atrocious - both scarce and expensive.  The light rail was a relief, but I was disappointed about not being able to take advantage of it Sunday.  OTOH, if we'd taken the light rail, we probably wouldn't have been able to make it to Anapolis for dinner.  Everything works out the way it is supposed to in the end.  The prices at the Inner Harbor were mostly way too high, but we did find deals by being creative.  Outlying areas were either obviously old money or they were obviously very-low-income.  That made me uncomfortable.  And the crime rate! I normally feel safe wherever I go, but the really obvious police presence everywhere actually bothered me.  They wouldn't be there if they didn't need to be, right?

I'm supposed to be driving to Moline right now, but my hotel didn't have a room available, so I'm heading out at 0500 tomorrow instead.  I'll be back home again Thurs night.  It looks like I'll be T-W-T in Moline through October.  The bank account will like the schedule, even if I don't.

fullygoldy: Josh Lyman S'up? (Josh Sup)

If you put M&Ms into a half-empty tin of Altoids Dark Chocolate Dipped Mints, teh M&Ms will take on a minty flavor!

I'm finding that I like Mavis as a person very much.  Of course, I already love her very much as a daughter, but it's heartening to know that she's a person I'd want to know anyway. (I think Rupert is finding his way to this place too, but it seems slower because he's a boy *and* she's had a 3 year head start).

Almost, but-not-quite catching a cold is good in two ways - the not catching the cold way, and the giving yourself permission to take the day (afternoon/evening) off way.  Also, DH's cold tea kicks ass! And colds!

Finding Fat Tire Amber in the supermarket in Joliet almost makes up for having to sit here alone in my undies (or should I say 'small pants'?) drinking it. It also goes well with salad bar salad and minty M&Ms.  Dinner of champions. What?

Although I would love to have read HP7 all in one go, we're only at chapter 21 now.  First the boy read it, then the girl, then I finally started reading it aloud to DH.  I won't be the last to read it either - our copy is already promised to the neighbors.  My voice doesn't last more than 2 chapters at a time, so the most we'll do in a day is 1-2.  With me being out of town 3 days/week, it's really slowing us down.  OTOH, he says he prefers the way I read it to the idea of getting the audio book.  I try to do some voices, but nothing major, and I do try to get some of an English lilt into the phrasing - years of watching BBC and now listening to podfic made by foreign fans helps me get the emphasis on the right syl-la-ble. heh.

I've been having a lot of kissing dreams lately - at least once a week.  Just dreams of sweet sweet kisses.  I wake up all smiley from them.

Beer Fest Recap

Ahhh! Beer!  Wonderful, wonderful Beer!

We got to the park 30 min before our shift, so we had plenty of time to stake out a good spot under a tree and eat some breakfast before getting to work.  Unfortunately, the gals at Panera didn't manage to get our bagels sliced but we survived.  Got greeted by Czar Mark with hugs and handshakes.  Saw some old friends on the shift before us - they were nearly done with theirs and looking a bit wilted.  It was hot and muggy and we all started sweating right away.  B was on clipboard duty again, and the rest of us toted stuff for the brewers - including lots of kegs.  I was tickled to haul a load for Gordon Biersch, my home town brewery (San Jose).  Saw Toni again, worked side by side with her, and she was ready to step in and spell B at the clipboard if he needed her, but he ended up working straight through.  We all kept checking him and making sure he was drinking lots of water.  Met Angie this year - her 3rd? year working, but first on Load-in.  She knew B though from last year - when she was doing brewer check-in and pointing out B's straw hat to everyone who didn't know where to go.  Two hours of hot, sweaty effort later, we were on the ugly blanket, cooling down, changing shirts and trying to decide what to drink first.

The first thing I had was a dry hopped English pale ale from The Livery which was from the new "Real Ale" tent.  OMG.  So wonderful!  It seems this year's pet technique was dry hopping - something B's been doing for years with terrific results.  We decided to hit the 100 tent first, since it was furthest from the blanket.  Collected 5 pint glasses throughout the afternoon, plus dozens of coasters, stickers and matchbooks.  Three Floyd's had something they're billing as "the King on Crack" an even more souped up version of Alpha King.  O! M! G!  Really fantastic stuff.  Too bad I can only remember the last half of the name: xxx Resplendence. LOL.  It was indeed.

Saw Bryan the sax player, Rob the brewer, Pat the former brewpub owner, his lovely wife, Christine of web-cam fame, and one of my personal faves "Wendell"-also-Freddie of the glorious dreds and inky skin.  He's got one of the best smiles I've ever encountered.

Wendell always gives me the fest tattoo, and this year he said he'd been practicing his technique just for me :)  Rob-the-brewer also gave me his traditional tattoo treatment (Headless Man this year) even though I'd thought I was going to pass it up.  Something new though - *I* gave a tattoo to Sue - on the back of her shoulder, but still - I employed most of Rob's technique (except for the neck nibbling and earlobe sucking).

Sadly, White Winter Meadery ran out of mead before I got there, and when I found that out, I skipped that whole side of the tent.  So many of the beers I tried this year were so spectacular that I didn't want to pour them out to try something else.  With the extra-large pours that seemed to be prevalent this year (our tasting glasses were nearly always filled to the 3/4 mark instead of 1/4), I tended to bypass several stations between refills.  So, I tasted less beer, and I also managed to drink less than usual.  Translation - I remember the line for the cab and the ride back to [profile] bzdchrisand [profile] busman1994's place.

The food was also fabulous - huge chunks of lobster in the rolls, beefstake tomato slices drizzled with truffle oil and EVOO, gazpacho with beet greens, sort-of refrigerator pickles with a bright, fresh flavor, some truffled cheese and a double creme brie and a sage english cheese and a chipotle cheddar for snacking.  We also had a wasabi-mustard flavored kettle chip that was challenging and tasty all at once.

All in all, a wonderful fest again.  Even with the muggy temps, it was pretty darn pleasant to be on the shore of Lake Monona with 5000 of my closest friends for the afternoon.

I had said before:  attending this on my own was a pretty big stretch for me.  By and large, everyone I spoke to was thoughtful, intelligent, sincere and friendly.

It's true.  I'm a borderline introvert, hooked up with an extreme extrovert in RL.  I like to live inside my head.  I like my space, my quiet.  It's definitely how I recharge.  But. I also like to socialize and entertain.  I'm very comfortable in groups where I know most of the people.  I've got very little problem with standing up in front of a room full of strangers and "performing" as long as I feel my material is well-prepared.  It's actually harder to stand up in front of a small group of people I know, LOL.  So most people who know me casually think I'm much more of an extrovert than I really am.

I had to approach WisCon like I would if I were attending a conference at my employer's behest.  I had to act like I was getting paid to be outgoing.  It helped.  It's really hard to overcome inertia and make those first couple of steps toward a stranger just to introduce myself.  It's really hard when I'm not intending to flirt with said stranger.  How weird is that?  I like to flirt, and I've been doing it all my life, so if I see someone interesting, I'll just find a way to walk on over (usually I just convince myself I've been invited).  K and J were easy to approach in that respect on Friday and Sunday nights.  J was a little harder because I'm pretty stupid when it comes to flirting with women.  Not enough practice.

All in all, it was a great experience, and I'm looking forward to next year.  I hope I'll stay in touch with a few new folks until then too, especially since a couple of them are right here in town.

Yeah, last week, all I did was squee over how wonderful the Great Taste of the Midwest was, but I didn't actually talk about the #1 reason we drag our butts down there every year.

I can't wait for next year!

And the too-good-to-hide-behind-a-cut-INSTA-REC:

After dinner at the Dane, I came home to my flist and found Patience is a Virtue by [personal profile] 30toseoul, which is OMG Scorching! and I know a couple of my pervy friends will appreciate it mightily (yes, B, this means you too).  I just have to say, I usually avoid new-to-me writers like the plague, but [personal profile] 30toseoul totally won me over with her first couple of posts, and now I'm just a pavlovian mess anytime I see her name pop up on my flist.  This woman can bring the HAWT.

Our Town

I have to say it again, "I LOVE our town." It is so SQUARE!

God, I love our town!!  If you ask me, it's as close to heaven as a city can get.

And don't even get me started on next month.  [profile] rougebitch has aptly renamed it "the day of public drunkenness," but it's real name is  "The Great Taste of the Midwest."  The midwest's largest, most popular, most exclusive beer festival, where 5000 or so  beer fiends will descend upon Olin Turville Park and drink themselves silly.  If you didn't get your tickets the first week of May, we won't be seeing you there.  You'd think with these conditions, there'd be fisticuffs galore, but these are the happiest, politest drunks you'll ever meet.  We're all just so damn grateful to be there, tasting the fantastic lagers, ales & meads, thrilled to meet the brewers and hear about their trials and inspiration, delighted to see friends we've made in the past, that we only see here, once a year.  It's another fantastic recurring event hosted in our town, but this one isn't held on the square.

What's not to love? (and hey, that's rhetorical, okay?  don't be killing my buzz in comments today)
fullygoldy: Yellow Roses (Fresh Veg)
[profile] barley52 & I made a raid on Whole Foods yesterday, so today's snack went something like this:

Country style pork pate' with peppercorns
Van Gogh (Wisconsin) Aged Gouda
Comte le trois semi-hard cheese - it's hard to describe other than sin melting in your mouth
Green olives marinated in sea fennel
Oven-roasted tomatoes in olive oil
Breton crackers
Sourdough bread
New Glarus "Naked" beer

I know feel ready to enter the kitchen and begin working on the roasted garlic aioli for the potatoes I'm making for dinner.  The ribs are on the grill for at least the next 2 hours... Margaritas are in the offing.  Just in case you don't realize it, the "snack" was our 2nd meal of the day, so it's not as bad as it sounds.  Although we just realized we've been going through some sort of pork renaissance this week/end.  Pork shish kebob with peppers and fresh pineapple on Thurs.  Andouille Sausage on Sat.  Breakfast links and bacon this morning.  Ribs tonight.  Pork fat rules, babyees!!  We also stuck 3 very large and meaty ham hocks in the freezer. hmmmm.

OTOH, I can't wait for tomatoes to start ripening in the garden.  I'm totally learning to roast my own this year.

And a warning - We ate at the Cousin's Subs on Odana for a quick lunch Friday.  I'd had a poor service experience there a while back, but thought it would be fair to give them a second try.  We were the first of the mini-rush they had while we were there. The service was better, but the table I picked was quite sticky, so DH wanted to move down one.  That one wasn't as bad, but I offered him a Wet Wipe anyway, thinking he'd use it to clean his hands (we don't go anywhere without wipes and hand sanitizer anymore).  He used the wipe to clean the table, and came up with an almost totally green wipe.  Can you say "fungal?"  So he went up to the counter and said to the manager, "I don't mean to be critical, but I just wiped this off my table."  The manager promptly sent a young lady out to clean our table for us.  I said, "this one is clean now, but that one is really sticky."  She cleaned it and decided to do all of the tables.  I was watching surreptitiously, and every table she sprayed down returned a very black paper towel.  She kept balling them up in her other hand, so you couldn't really see how bad they were unless you were watching.  Then DH observed her wiping down the soda machine and napkin dispensers.  Everytime she'd wipe something off, she'd make a disgusted face at the paper towel.  In light of all this, I won't be patronizing that location again.

fullygoldy: Yellow Roses (On top)
Heh.

I'm having fun spending the tax refund.  I think DH is enjoying it too, at least I hope he is.

See?  So much fun!!  On top of all that, we discovered today that Sierra Nevada has put out a limited edition IPA.  MMMMMmmmm.  It is extremely well-balanced and tasty.  Exactly what you'd expect from Sierra Nevada.  It's not going to bump any of my favorite IPAs from the top of the list, but it's worth checking out.
fullygoldy: Sheppard Smirking (Blow Me)
Dang it! Not only did I not keep off those extra couple of pounds, I gained back enough that I am now only 5 lbs down from my starting weight which is also 2 lbs more than P-weight.

The weekend binge really did me in. And with xmas coming, I know I'll be lucky to just maintain this level. We've got Solstice Dinner on Wed, then xmas eve will be a seafood extravaganza, with pate' and champagne for santa, then xmas day will be eggnog pancakes and mimosas for breakfast, fondue for lunch, and roast lamb with mashed potatoes and other sides for dinner, finishing off with Hagen Daas (sp?) for dessert. Not to mention all the candy, cookies and other assorted naughtiness all weekend long. ::sigh::

Also, how unfair is it that yesterday at the liquor store, we stumbled across Fuller's London Pride for $5.99/six? Of course we had to get two! Not to mention the New Glarus IPA and Lindeman's Cherry Lambic, the Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau that made their way home with us. This after last week's TWO types of vodka, and half the previous beer run still in the fridge. At least the bar is well-stocked now.

I WILL practice restraint. I WILL practice restraint. I Will! I Will!

Status Report

I've been trying to do something physical at least every other day. This currently translates to "walk the dog." We get in 1.5 to 2.5 miles each time out. I've managed 5 times this week, which is better than expected.
I imagine that when the weather gets yucky, I might be motivated to go back to yoga regularly. I love yoga, but I haven't been in the right frame of mind for it. I like it early in the morning, while the house is quiet. But to get that, I have to be doing it at 5 am or 530 at the latest. I'm not so crazy about this time slot. Yes, yes, I could do it after everyone leaves the house, but then it wouldn't be early and meditative. It would seem more like exercise than balance-seeking. Does this seem dumb? It seems dumb to me, but I can't seem to break the mindset.
I also fantasize that I'll be motivated to walk/run the stairs in the house a few times a week. This is plausible because we have 3 sets of stairs in the house, so it would be a decent circuit, if somewhat boring.
As for calorie control, I've come to the conclusion that the only place I can really ditch calories is in the alcohol department. I'm really quite the lush. I like a beer in the afternoon. Or at least while I'm cooking dinner. Unless I'm cooking with wine, which means I'll want a glass of that. If I'm making something that's going to be accompanied by vodka, I want wine while I'm cooking that too. If I have a martini with dinner, I'm going to want at least one more after dinner. If there's a liqueur in the house, I'll want it for dessert. I don't usually eat dessert, but I can almost always be convinced (like it takes any effort) to have a nightcap/dessert drink. After two martinis, I tend to lose judgement about how many more I should have. So really, one drink per day should be my limit. And if I manage to do that think of how many calories I won't be consuming! Because really, if I drink something besides alcohol, its water. Maybe herbal tea. I might have some juice on Sunday morning, or a glass of silk or milk instead of a snack, but that's pretty much it. No sodas, no coffee. Oh. Eggnog in the winter, but that usually replaces a snack or dessert or alcoholic drink. Sheesh, I forgot eggnog season was upon us. When we go out to eat, we 99.9% of the time go where there is a good bar of some kind. No Perkins for us, LOL.
Most of our friends know we eat pretty healthy stuff. I don't snack much, we don't keep a lot of traditional snack food in the house. Tortilla chips, cause we're all addicted to salsa. Popcorn. Some crackers. We all eat way too much cheese, but we also eat more veggies than most people, and lots of fruit. Whole grains, not a lot of meat, and we try to go with fresh and home-made as much as possible. We don't do a lot of cream sauces, but we're hitting the season for scalloped potatoes & pork chops. That dish is a serious downfall. We're pretty low fat all the time except for cheese and winter dishes that require milk and cheese. So it's the alcohol I have to cut back on. Oy.
I have successfully navigated the first Epic "hurdle." This is the first time they've asked me for more info. It's actually less info than was on the on-line application, but it's a hard-copy form I have to fill out and send in. Maybe they want to analyze my handwriting? Maybe they want to see how quickly I'll respond to the request? Who knows. I think it will be interesting to speak to them about the job even if I don't end up with it.
I'm trying to get the MAPC website posted for review, but I am too much of a dummie I guess. I'm positive that it's something relatively minor, and all it would take is someone who has published a web before to come over and point and say, "hey, you do it this way, ya big dummie." Any takers? Come on... you know you want to abuse me. ::bwg::
Mavis announced yesterday that she passed her test to get her temporary driver's license. EEEEK!
Rupert is 13 on Friday (11/4) and his big brother is 30 the same day. More EEeek!

Is this all?

Some of these are very generic.  I'd think the list would broaden your horizons.  I mean, tapas, kebabs, bbq, pasta, curry - there are so many different varieties of these.  I love yellow curries.  I've never tried green.
I'd say, if you eat meat, you should do Organic Beef at least once.  Candied Orange and Lemon peel the way [livejournal.com profile] cfxjosh  makes them are sublime.  Shrimp & Grits!  Avocado!  Homemade Ice Cream - vanilla or fresh peach or peppermint made with chopped candy canes.  Death by Chocolate Flourless Cake.  Champagne.  Ceviche.  Rabbit.  Artichokes.  Cioppino.  Hmmm - some of the CA girl in me seems to be leaking out ::g::  Belgian Ale.  Truffles.  Foie Gras. Triple cream Brie, Gorgonzola, Aged Cheddar or Gouda - what happened to the cheeses? Soft-shell crab, which is entirely different from #8.  Ostrich. Morels.

What have I missed?

The Great Taste of the Midwest is the all time greatest beer festival! Of course, I haven't been to the big one in CO, but I know people who have, and they didn't have nearly as much fun as we do. This was our 2nd yr to volunteer, and it's just so much fun helping the brewers unload their cars, and then getting to drink for an hour and a half before anyone else gets in.

Other fun things - running into particular people annually:

  • Rob, the brewer/owner of Tyranena, who knows how to apply a mean temp tattoo. My inner left thigh is still tingling.
  • Wendell, the cute jamaican with the pretty hair, and sexy accent who did not have tattoos this year, but hugged us anyway.
  • Toni, aka Ms. Sassy, bossing the cars around.
  • The breakfast burrito guy - yum!
  • Mark M., volunteer coordinator extraordinaire, who rsvp'd DH automatically.
  • B&N of the colorful hair, who are now 'small with child' - way to go, guys!
  • Pat, founder of Mt Horeb brew pub (now the Grumpy Troll).

Beers we drink annually:

  • Flossmoor Station - always has good belgian styles
  • Three Floyds - for over the top hops
  • White Winter - actually mead and related things, and not to be missed
  • Appletreow Winery - more mead and yumminess, particularly the fortified Peach dessert wine. OMG

We're much pickier than we were when we were paying to get in - now we just try what looks good and keep going back to the faves.  Let everyone else see how many beers they can consume in an afternoon.  Instead of starting at one tent, and trying to do something at every brewery, we scope out all the faves and interesting things first.  We did make both sides of all 3 tents, but we maybe hit 30-40% of the exhibits.  This year, we even left before closing time (sure it was only half an hour, but still).

There were many choruses of the Beer Song, and many "Beer Goddess"es to meet and greet.  It totally cracks me up that last year we had at least 7 polys on our volunteer shift, and this year we traded out one, but still had 7 (I'm only counting the ones I know personally).  The weather was really pleasant, even though there was a shower in the afternoon.  I'm glad it wasn't scorching the way it's been for most of the summer.

After the fest, DH & I got a chance to debunk that whole "erototoxin" myth, when a good friend showed up.  We thought about dropping in on a play party we knew about, but decided to make our own instead. ~smile~ Later on, we decided to sleep in the tent (still up from the dinner party weekend).  It was perfect outdoor sleeping weather, which meant it was perfect for outdoor myth debunking too.  Because, you know, the scientific method requires repeatability.
