Fan Girl Wannabe

Is it amazing to anyone else that Adam Lambert (Musician) is a stand-alone fandom on AO3? I get having the American Idol fandom, with subsets for the different seasons, but Adam? He's got a life of his own. And currently has 1147 stories about him posted to AO3.

People! That's more than White Collar with it's 1019 delightful stories, or Star Wars, or Pirates of the Carribean, or you know, anything in Yuletide. I keep watching the count go up everyday. It's amazing how active this fandom is right now. If he continues to be his fabulous self, he could start oppressing fandom  any day now! Think of it! Years and years of sparkly, near canon fic! Why, it could be as long-lasting and satisfying as (gasp)  due South! The 2819 uploaded stories aren't nearly all - I'm pretty sure I've read that many on my own, before AO3 was created, and I'm nowhere near having completed the catalog. Hmmm, the Ray wars may have to take a back seat to CKR vs Lambert for who's the sexiest.  And while Adam is so very shiny and sparkly, I think we all know who  my  heart  belongs to.  Besides, Adam's a baby compared to Callum, and I'm always always always gonna prefer the men to the boys.

Work kicked my butt today, and tomorrow is the first day of 13 weeks of concentrated effort (and the expenditure of $3.5 MM), so I'm trying to catch up. I was hoping to complete this in August, but I'll take finishing this week.

Day 25. A fic you wish you'd never read -

yannow, I tend to hit the back button extremely quickly, so I rarely finish a fic I'm not enjoying. And they're so forgettable, I don't think I could ever answer this one. But I do recall a few months ago, reading chapter after chapter of something and thinking, "surely this is going somewhere. I'll have perservered for a reason." But when I got to the end (nearly 20 chapters!), all the story said was, ::gruff voice:: "Don't call me Shirley."

Day 26. A fic with a great OC

Okay, I thought and thought, and was having a hard time coming up with a fic for this spot, when it hit me: Written by the Victors by cesperanza and podficced by nearly all of fandom* doesn't have just one OC - it has a whole cast of OC characters. In fact the canon characters are in the definite minority. This is an EPIC read (the podfic is something like 8 hrs!) and it's worth every freaking minute. You've got layers of canon, fanon, history, science, politics, academia, and meta for all of those. You've got comedy, drama, angst, true love, tropes turned on their ears, a bibliograpy, and an index. The Victorverse has spawned it's own webpage full of links of joy.

*Ok, maybe only like 36 members of fandom particpated in the awesome podfic project, but you should see the list!

Day 27. A fic that spawned an inside joke

and again with not having a clue. I'm such a fringe member of fandom, I don't think I know any inside jokes. I guess I could point to Speranza again, with OK Computer - while she was writing it, she started referring to it as "the one with the Lesbian porn" and then her shorthand was just "Lesbian porn" and finally it was "Lesbians!" as in "I'm still working on the Lesbians, I swear!" (she writes one story at a time). And the funny (inside joke) part was that the Lesbians were dispensed with in the first 6000 words (and they were important!) and then were drowned out by the remaining 29,000! Ces writes the best, longest, chewiest stories. (and the icon totally goes with this one)

I didn't post yesterday, but I ran into the awesome sasha_feather today, and she told me I didn't have to be a slave to the calendar, and I can post what and when I please. So this is my 12th post of the meme.

Day 12. A fic with excellent banter

- geez, anything by cesperanza , in any fandom, anything Stargate:Atlantis, and usually you'd think John/Rodney, but Spirit by resonant  gives delightful Zelenka!

Day 02. A favorite new fic (posted in the last few weeks)
- crysothemis 's "Happy"

This is really new and really wonderful.  Crys spends so much time on art these days that her stories are like stumbling over treasures.  She's always written beautifully, but her focus is more on her art these days than her writing.  I've recced her here before, both art and writing, and I'm looking forward to doing so again and again.

In my feed back to Crys, I said, "this has to be the best amnesia fic I've read," and "it really reads like an episode (with the bonus of all the missing scenes cut for length or american sensibilities) - the plot, the *plan,* the ridiculous timing of the "rescue," there's a subplot, the ensemble makes their appearances.... It's all so authentic (and authentically awesome)."

So go. Read. Enjoy.

tonight, atwere_duck 's bday gathering, I wondered aloud ifsasha_feather  had enjoyed the john_farr community yet... Amazingly enough, she had not yet heard of this corner of teh cracktastic neighborhood stargate:atlantis fandom.  Well, now you know.  I just can't believe I was ahead of the curve on this one :)

Also tonight, we were enjoying trying out the text-to-speech function of sasha's Kindle.  Luckily enough, she had an appropriately porny piece to use as an example. BWAHAHEHA!  But that caused antarcticlust (on LJ) to wonder why the device doesn't allow you to choose voice modes - professional, sexy, etc.  She then started on "Now is the winter of our discontent..." in a pretty fair version of a phone sex voice.  It immediately put me in mind ofcesperanza 's Four Virtues, a lovely DueSouth story with this section:

 "There's people, I guess, who want to be tied up, hung from meat hooks, and whipped while somebody reads Dickens to them." Ray quirks a smile, shakes his head, and begins to carve the roast into thin slices. "'Pip had returned from the docklands'—Shh-whack! 'He found there was tea and cakes.'—Shh-whack!'" Ray stops, frowns, and then looks hard at me, face gone suddenly serious. "Though, you know—maybe that's love of a sort. Finding someone who loves you enough to do that."

And then towards the end, it comes up again.  So yeah. Fun times.
