DH: You could have called it Beaujolais & Marmalade
Me: We could have, but I don't think anyone orders wine
DH: I love beer-drinking women! (quelle surprise, LOL)
Wearing: Black Jeans, Black V-neck sweater over lime green tank, Black fleece snow boots and my wonderful new Clinique mascara. (Wow! this stuff is great - it stays put all day, no flaking, no eye irration, and then wipes off with a wet washcloth!)
Planning: Fannish Squee!! Tonight is the SGA finale, and some fangirls are coming over to partake of the big TV. Let me know if you want to be fannish too :)
Listening: Technically, still listening to Yo-Yo, but I need to open my newest arrival - Fall Out Boy's Folie a Deux
Help Me, Oh Mighty Flist!
Saturday, August 2nd, 2008 10:09 amTwo weeks ago, I could have sworn I was watching "The Seed" but the next day, I didn't recognize a thing you all were squeeing about. Apparently I was watching where watching=sleeping on the sofa.
Last week, it was a choice. I'm not sorry I chose to be seeing the Police in concert, but now that I'm home, I'd really love to see "Broken Ties."
And last night, I was home 10 min early for the 11:00 showing (don't know ep title yet), and had to be realistic - I was dead on my feet, what from 3 hrs sleep Thurs night, all day in MLW and several beers out with friends. I made the hard call and went to sleep in my bed instead of pretending I was watching from the sofa.
So - has anybody local got any of these eps on TiVo or whatever? I am in dire need of an SGA fix.

SGA Fans on my Flist
Sunday, July 6th, 2008 07:34 amI'm planning to host the premier of Season 5 this Friday, July 11 at 9:00 central.
So, if you're in the area, and want to come watch our Team in HD, on a decently-sized screen, come on down!
I'm planning to serve intergalactic cocktails as well. Some of them may be blue.
And if anyone wants to bring DVDs of past seasons, we can have a little pre-party warmup since SCI FI is not smart enough to play last season's finale directly before the new season's premier. Let's say 7ish is the early start time, and any time up until 8:55 is kosher for arrival ;) I realize Dr Who is bracketing OUR ep, so we can watch that in lieu of DVDs if we must.
If you want to bring snacks, they should be "Team Night" type snacks, or of the AMTDI variety. hee.

AIIEEEEEE!! Neither Rodney McKay, nor John Sheppard are emotionally aware/intelligent enough to have been in this story. There they were, having honest dialogues, about their feelings!! Part of the story was in front of an audience.
Sheesh, DH is the most emotionally honest person I've ever been in a relationship with, and even he doesn't use this vocabulary. They are just NOT those guys.
Why, oh why, can't I follow my own rules about new authors? Also? I woke up with my neck feeling the best it's been all week, and as soon as I arrived in my cube, it started hurting. I may have to rethink my vacation schedule for the year.
To Rec or Not to Rec; Rules
Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 12:31 pmThe other day, I was reading a story called Resilience by Tira Nog. I’d decided to read it because it was recc’d on a list that included a lot of stories I had already enjoyed, and this was practically the only thing new-to-me on the list. I figured that even if I didn’t know the reccer, our tastes seemed fairly similar.
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
1) Stick with authors you know,
2) If you’re branching out, stick with recs from people you trust,
3) (did not come into play with this story) Avoid WIPs like the plague – even from authors you love (I’m still stuck in WIP hell with

4) Hit the back button as soon as you’ve established the characterization does not agree or mesh in any way with the characters in your head.
My slash life would be so much easier if I weren’t a softy that frequently forgets these rules.
Here is where a more detailed review of the named WIP authors would be if the autosave feature actually did anything useful. Suffice it to say,

Review: The Ark of Truth
Saturday, March 15th, 2008 08:11 amSo we all know that Stargate: SG-1 had a good long run - 11? seasons, and will be missed by many, but syndication is a wonderful thing (and the reason we still get to see all 11 seasons of M*A*S*H). However, TPTB apparently planned this DVD-only release in conjunction with the last season.
There are special features, and the one we watched last night was really helpful for anyone who didn't watch all of the last few seasons. It was about 15 min of recapping the whole Ori story arc, so that when the movie starts, you have some frame of reference. It's like an extended-play of [cue sonorous narrator] "previously on Stargate: SG-1..."
hee!
So this is the story of how our intrepid hero/explorers deal with their latest set of bad guys that are out to rule the universe. And the theme is so comically universal! Think of all the James Bond baddies - they were always evil geniuses intent upon ruling the world. Then the early SG-1 crew had to deal with baddies wanting to rule the Galaxy, and finally, the baddies are big and bad enough that they want to rule/exploit the universe, and impersonating gods is the past time of choice.
I had a lot of trouble keeping a straight face when the whole "Merlin" arc came up in season 9 or 10, so while the DVD was classically Stargate, there were still times when I was laughing at the unbelievable script or premise. And there was one moment where I blurted out "the witch is dead!" and DH said "I was just about to say!" Vala was completely true to herself, plus we got to see some of the deeper parts of her that were explored in the "50-yrs trapped in a time bubble" episode. Cam was a fighting machine, Teal'c was his awesome self, and Sam was considerably warmer and fuzzier than ever before, while still be scarily smart and competent.
And this is where I realize that even though I'm a fan, and I love this show (and several others), I'm not ever going to be the kind of fan that takes pains to remember the names of episodes and what season they played in. If I know an episode name it's probably because I just saw it, or I read a really good fanfic based on it. Other than that, I don't really need to know.
I loved the running bit about Cam not wanting to be the one "in the chair" and even his trying to get removed from command to make Sam have to sit in the chair was great. Obviously, removing Cam and giving the command to Sam was not going to change the outcome, so why bother?
Another universal theme - the supposedly friendly hostile on board. Deep cover, mole, misguided moron, whatever you call it, it always turns out the same - do those people never watch the B movies? Conversely, perhaps the SG-1 writers watch too many B movies.
So, still my TV show, turned to feature length story, but with amped up effects and much more in the way of a musical score. It was cool to hear them extend the beloved theme song and break it apart and build it back up in variations. If imitation is the sincerist form of flattery, we now know that the SG-1 writers truly love all those sf/fantasy stories from Aliens to Wizard of oZ. It was even weirdly reminiscent of the Team America movie, now that I think about it.

3) Ronon likes them pretty *and* smart. Now we just need
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
ETA I forgot to say: we also learned that Ronon has no problem letting himself get banged up just to have an excuse to visit Keller. It was totally apparent to me in his first scene in the infirmary that if he didn't want to visit Keller, he wouldn't have even bothered with going to the infirmary.
5) I was upset with Teyla for climbing out the window too, but I think it was in character. The fact that she almost immediately climbed *back in* the window was a relief, and the look on her face - "what the hell am I doing?" made it believable that she came to her senses. (I stood on home made scaffolding to scrape and paint my windows when I was 5+ mos myself - I was very careful, but it wasn't my brightest idea ever.) Teyla is still learning that pregnancy is a whole different thing than non-pregnancy. For a strong, capable woman, coming up against very real limitations every day is quite the smackdown.
7) I learned that both Teyla and John love Rodney more than anyone else in the city. As soon as they realized he was locked somewhere without his computer and radio, they knew he was freaking out. I think their determination to get out was more to get to Rodney than to save the city.
I Am Amused

When you see this, post a little weensy excerpt from as many random works-in-progress as you can find lying around. Who knows? Maybe inspiration will burst forth and do something, um, inspiration-y.
Well, I don't really have all that many WIPs, but I'll throw out these bits:
from an untitled CSI (Gil/Nick/Greg):
Greg lurches into Nick’s hand and shudders, but now Nick is nothing but soothing, drawing the pleasure out of him with long, sure strokes, licking and biting the back of his neck and tops of his shoulders, and whispering hot, delicious nonsense in his ear. Finally, when he feels the pressure building, he cracks open his eyes again to meet Gil’s stare. If he felt devoured before, he doesn’t have words for what he feels now. The intensity, the flush rising across Gil’s face, the tent in Gil’s pants, the way Gil’s hands are rhythmically clenching and unclenching, carefully held away from his body. It’s shocking and hot and “Ah! Nick! Oh! Ohhhh! G-Gillll!” he wails as his orgasm is ripped out of him. He’s spurting all over Nick’s hand and the nice bedspread, shocked by all the sensations coursing through him.
from a commentary for thisisbone's Two-Player Game (Casey/Dan/Stacey Kerr):
After all this time, this is still the most satisfying story I’ve read. The threesome is so realistic, and the boys seem like actual guys. In fact, all of Bone’s men read as so convincingly male, that for a very long time, I was convinced Bone was male. Silly me, I had no idea how unlikely that was.
This commentary should be posted by now, but just as I was getting ready to do it, I had an insight that I really wanted to include. Unfortunately, it sounded much better in my head, and now I've lost the thread. So I'm hoping I'll get it back soon and then Bone will think I'm a cool commentator instead of some random lurkery fangirl.
from an original smutty practice piece, Tongue-Twister:
I hope, by this time, that other lovely parts of you have been intrigued, are in fact envious of the care and attention lavished on your hapless digits. Does the back of your knee pine for attention? Shall I dip my tongue there for more exploration, or merely rub my closed lips in that silken fold? Purrrrrrr…. Lie back, sweet one, I have not yet begun to acquaint you fully with my naughty tongue. I’ll grip your hips and drag mySelf back up to re-explore the cavern of your mouth. Mated tongues—gently, slickly dueling. Does the roof of your mouth tickle when I lick it?
from the SGA Baseball AU that ate my brain last summer (Sheppard/McKay):
Wow! I spend one Saturday reading actual books with paper pages, and my flist explodes with the SGA Kissing squee, LOL. Lots of tasty morsels over there, yes indeedy.
Since I read two whole books though, I figure I ought to review them.
The Privilege of the Sword by Ellen Kushner was on my WisCon reading list. I hadn't intended to read it first, but I was in Borders with the kids on the 4th, and it was the only thing on my list I could remember well enough to find (although I suspect the majority of my WisCon list cannot be picked up at will at Borders). It's a YA Fantasy story, with a 15-16 yr-old girl as the central character. She learns to be a swordsman at her Uncle-the-Mad-Duke's whim, and she learns alot of other stuff too. Unfortunately, while I did lightly enjoy this read, because it is fun and engaging, I was also annoyed a lot of the time. It's set in a time when women are property and the rules of society are everything (and nothing simultaneously - as long as you have wealth and/or power). And the women are all trained from birth to help perpetuate the situation. So the semi-endless prattle about dresses and parties and catching a man just grated on me. The cool thing about the story is that the Mad Duke is completely in love with his former swordsman, and since he can't or won't let himself have that relationship, he runs around the city in a perpetual state of debauchery with both men and women. So our proper young Lady Katherine gets quite an eyeful of beautiful young men in various stages of undress, and actually engages in a bit of voyeurism near the end - so fun for any slashers reading along.
Next up, I picked up Mavis's latest as soon as she finished it. Sarah Dessen's, the truth about forever. Another YA, since Mavis is actually in that age group. It's about a girl's summer between Jr and Sr year. She'd lost her dad 18 mos before, and is still trying to come to grips with the loss. Her boyfriend is charming /sarcasm, but she manages to figure it out with the help of a bunch of new friends. See, she ends up working for a catering company run by an unorganized woman, her two nephews, and two other neighbor girls who may have been related as well. This wacky group of people are entirely unlike her normal crowd, and they're a little more realistic about surviving life in the real world. She learns something from them, and she's able to help her mom learn a little of it too. It's a sweet and hopeful story, with realistic depictions of what teenagers get up to during the summer months, minus the sex. ::g::
Rupert also got a book that day - the one missing from a series he was reading, and gobbled it down. He was happy to have some holes plugged, but it's not something I'm going to be reading.

OMG, between my Dad, my youngest sister, DH and my kids, I have been subjected to more TV than can possibly be healthy. I'm bad enough with my own shows! Who knew that secondary TV exposure could be as bad as second hand smoke?
-Bold all of the following TV shows which you've ever seen 3 or more episodes of in your lifetime.
- Italicize a show if you're positive you've seen every episode of it.
- If you want, add up to 3 additional shows (keep the list in alphabetical order).
I added the cooking shows, natch.

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 09:51 amIt is set Stargate:Atlantis universe, but you don't really have to know the show or the characters to get this one. It's just that real and pertinent. I have some experience with this scenario, and let me tell you, the potential for it ending badly is huge, no matter which player you end up being. Speranza takes care of all of her players with a lot more compassion than I ever mustered in RL, but it still hurts. It's a very good read.
She also tackled the topic with her usual grace and humor in "Some Strange Prophecy" which is dueSouth-based, and much, much longer. It's really a cameo within the larger story, instead of being the story itself. If you are so inclined, you can find it by using the shiny new links in my sidebar.

Summary: John Sheppard has a rich interior life.
( Poster )
( Story )
1) good food - well, I grew up in the vegetable garden of the country, CA, and spent my childhood snitching perfectly ripened whatever off vines and trees and out of gardens that may or may not have belonged to me. So that was probably the start. Neither of my parents could cook when they got married (at 20 & 18) so they learned together, and kept learning and experimenting, so that when I got old enough to wield utensils, naturally I joined in the learning too. Food was just this huge adventure at our house, so when I moved out, I continued in that vein. Plus, it's not hard to make/serve food that is as nourishing to the eye and soul as it is to the body. So it seems a shame not to bring out its full potential.
2) family - heh. I was a princess for a long time (so much so that the entire family made the trek when I graduated from college). I was the middle grandkid of 11 (mom's side) with the next oldest and next youngest being 5 yrs away from me and male. My mom's side of the family was all nearby, so we had extended family get-togethers for all the major holidays and at least once each summer. My dad was the only visibly present male influence on my cousins, since grandpa lived 8 hrs away. All my older cousins took turns babysitting me, and I'd spend weeks of my summer at my grandparents house. Then they all took turns working for my dad (a landscaper) so that we saw each other daily. My DH had similar extended family experiences, so we decided to make sure our kids got the benefit of that as much as possible, even when we no longer lived so close to relatives. We've been "on our own" for 10 yrs now, but we truly do enjoy each other's company. I love my kids a lot, but I also like and respect them as people. I've always tried to encourage them to be the kind of people they want to be remembered as. Does that make sense? Anyway, our friends have always seemed to like our kids, and have their own relationships with them. I/we think it's important for people to have friends outside their immediate age group/obvious social group, and the kids seem to have embraced the spirit of that. We also have lots of chosen family, as all 4 of us seem to have inherited the trait of picking up strays.
3) SGA - Like! OMG! /valley girl. I love science fiction. And pretty, pretty boys. And pretty boys in luurrve. So, what's not to fangir about SGA?! LOL Plus, ALL the best writers have tried their hand at SGA to great effect. It's a huge and active fandom, so there's still something new everyday :)
4) Oktoberfest - see #1! Actually, this goes back to my northern CA college town (Chico!). There was an enclave of germanic folk who'd hold Oktoberfest every year, and even though they were in no way associated with the uni, they'd be invaded by the cool kids who were in-the-know, and had turned the polka into a contact sport. Yes, we participated in the "Slam Polka" - what? it was the 80s. So, there I was, in 1987, married to B, and feeling homesick, and looking at a gentrified Oktoberfest menu in Bon Appetit, when he and our good friend, the-strange-man-with-a-shopping-cart, said, "we should have an Oktoberfest Party!" A tradition was born, strange guy co-hosted with us for many years, and the smallest one we ever had was the first year we lived in WI - '99. That year, we just took ourselves down to the Essen Haus and ate and drank till we wanted to pop. The menu has morphed over time, but we've always tried to remain true to the spirit of the original harvest celebration. My shining memory is probably the year an actual native of Germany attended, the mom of some neighbors, and she said, "I didn't know you would have food like this. This is not usual Oktoberfest food - this is truly special event food. And it's authentic." It meant alot, because even though my Dad's side of the family is German, and he's from Up Nort, no one ever handed down any of those traditions to me. B's favorite (prior to the pig roast) was the year the DA, the Sheriff and the stoners were all standing around the bonfire together, socializing like they'd been fast friends for years, while the Wiccans were teaching the little kids how to talk the fire bigger. LOL. That was a sight.
5) construction management - listen, have you got about a year? Seriously, I love my career. I love my current job. I am always fascinated by building sites, techniques and materials. I'm thrilled about the lean toward "green" in the industry. There is not enough time in the day to keep up with it all. I have no idea what you want to hear here... I got bit by the bug when I was 3 or 4. My dad took me to see our tract house midway through construction. I still vividly remember that visit. I think it was my mom's gentle suggestion to pursue architecture (being more genteel than actual construction) but I found CM in my friendly school of industrial technology, looked at the course load and went, "huh. I'm interested in all these classes and half of this stuff I already know I'm good at." KISMET. I was the 6th woman to get a degree in CM at Chico, and I had the highest starting salary of my class at graduation. $27K was an unheard of offer in those days.
I know it happened mainly because there were only 2 women graduates that year, and large companies were just starting to try to hire more women. In some ways, I know it's been an unfair advantage, because I've always found work faster than the men I know. BUT. I've also put up with my share of unfair bullshit. And, I'm damn good at my job. I was born for this job, and I know it.
When I first started out, I was super mindful that my performance would have an impact on the women in line behind me. And I knew they were there. I also knew it wasn't just women in CM I was on point for. It was all women who were trying to get into male-dominated fields, everywhere. I really believe that. So, I'm really grateful that my interest, temperment and ability all melded so well. Because I've never been fired, or thrown off a site, or had my project handed to someone else to rescue. I had been a utility infielder for most of my career, which offers great job security, but about three years ago, I got promoted to closer. I'm pretty proud of that. Maybe even more proud than I am of finally being a starter in every sense of the word. (yeah, baseball metaphors. let me know if you need any translation). So now, I'm pretty sure that job offers come in for Goldy, instead of for that-woman-named-Goldy, if you know what I mean. The only thing that would make my career any better would be to finally fulfill my secret fantasy of being the PM for a space station. Not gonna happen, but I'm surprisingly OK with that.
