I hate calling the Help Desk at work.  It's for all IT-related topics, including proprietary systems and cell phones.  Today though, was the 2nd day in a row that while my VPN connection was in effect, I could not access 3rd party web sites.  So if all I wanted to do was work, that wouldn't be a problem, right?  Wrong.  Because our company utilizes a variety of 3rd party web sites and programs.  So, here I am trying to approve a vendor's invoice, but I can't get to the site, because my VPN won't let me.  Sure, I could disconnect and reconnect through my own home server, but why should I have to do that?  It worked perfectly fine on Monday, and every day prior.  Why would it suddenly STOP?!

I call the Help Desk.  The first time, I have to hang up because the agent, Carolina, says she can't hear me (on my cell phone). I ask if I'm too quiet or if the connection is breaking up.  Her answer is neither. I'm making a WTF face.  She finally decides that the issue is loud static. I'm not hearing it at all.  I hang up and try again with a land line.

Now I'm speaking with Miguel.  I explain my problem.  He says, "so what you're saying is that when your VPN is connected, you can't access any of the company internet sites."  Um. No.  In fact, I said the opposite.  "Oh, right, OK, please hold a moment."  After awhile, and several more "please holds" he asks "Is it okay if I take over control of your computer?"  Here we go.  "Sure," I say.

M:  go to your URL bar and type in www.rooms.hp.com
FG:  you realize this won't work, right?
M:  what do you mean?
FG:  I am connected through the VPN, I won't be able to go to that site.  If I disconnect from VPN to let you remote access my computer, you won't be able to see my problem, because it's related to the VPN connection.
M:  Just a moment, please hold.

He comes back and starts walking me through the steps he'd have taken.  We get to where he wants to use an automatic configuration script.  He says the box should contain either of 2 options, and starts telling me them.  However, my box is empty, so I ask what I should type in the box, because while his English is good, his accent is occasionally difficult to parse.  He is surprised the box is empty.  Another hold.

M:  type http
M:  type backslash
FG:  should there be a colon after the "p"?
M:  no
FG: Ok, http\
M:  no, wait.  put a colon (to my ear it rhymes with column, sounds like colum, it takes a couple tries to get on the same page)
FG:  http:\
M:  no, wait.  make that a slash
FG:  forward slash?
M:  yes

we get that done, wipe all my temp files and browsing history, reduce my security from medium to "allow ALL cookies", reset defaults on a few other pages, and now it works.  Except, now I have to deal with extra cookies, and I'm betting that at least one of my now default settings is going to bite me on the ass, so I'll be on the phone with the Help Desk soon, trying to get that fixed.

Seriously?  If it was working 2 days ago, and I didn't do anything to change it, how did wiping my customizations resolve the issue?  If anything, it was the automatic configuration script.  Why they teach the front-line Help to automatically wipe everything every time they touch a machine is beyond me.  It's a step above rebooting, but shouldn't they at least ask if I've made any changes or installed something new recently?  BEFORE they start wiping stuff?

Secondly, why is it that every time I call, I end up catching/correcting at least one mistake?  This time they were minor, but one time the dude nearly deleted my entire email archive when I gave him remote access.  Maybe I can get that job when I "retire."  Then I can spend my days wreaking havoc on people's systems, and giggling when I hang up the phone.

My all-in-one printer finally died. Since I use it for work, I asked my manager for permission to get a new one. The most likely replacement part was $92 and a whole new printer was $120. Unfortunately, the new printer also required all new ink, because they don't make my model anymore. So I ordered the newer model, the 6600 instead of my trusty 6500.

Was it naïve of me to think the newer model would have all the same features as the previous model? Apparently so. I paid extra for 2nd day delivery, and it arrived late Tuesday. Yesterday morning I set it up, stripped off all the packaging (the quick-start card is very specific) and tried it out. My 2-page document printed on 2 pieces of paper. "Oh yeah, I need to change that setting so it will automatically print two-sided."

Um. Nope. Can't change that setting. It doesn't DO THAT!!!

After much searching, I find a list of footnotes in tiny print. Number 13, the last note says automatic two-sided printing is only available on model 6700.

facepalm 4EVER.

Today has been pretty sucky.  Work "team" shenanigans, a-fuckton-of-work-due-at-the-end-of-the-day-dumped-on-my-desk-at-noon sucky.  I finished that, at the expense of a bunch of other stuff that needs doing, and with the aid of a Capitol Amber for the last hour (working from home has a few perks).  I believe I will avoid thinking about work for at least 48 hrs now.

And our Wisconsin legislature has been up to all kinds of crappy shenanigans this week.  If I think about THAT with any amount of the attention it deserves, I will spend the weekend in tears.  Suffice to say, this slut votes, and I'll keep voting until they pry my voter registration card out of my cold dead hands.  And then I will haunt their asses for all eternity.

On the upside, DH finished a couple of painting projects.  So now our 4 side dining chairs are a deep deep blue that matches the console we're using for the bar, and the 2 end chairs are a buttermilk yellow.  The yellow and blue farmhouse theme is complete in the dining room.  The three hand-me-down bar stools in the kitchen (formerly forest green legs with honey stained seats) are now the same blue as the cabinets with black seats.  I love my kitchen, and this is just icing that makes me happy happy.  I'm calling this the anti-dote to today's suck, and planning to have it carry me through to Monday.

Summer has flirted with us all week, so this evening, we're going to hang out with some friends, and hear some music I've never heard before, and view some cult classic movie, and probably imbibe in too many adult imbibe-ables. So there, Friday. You're not the boss of me.

Hello, Texas!

Hey internet, my boss just volunteered me for a taskforce that is holding it's brainstorming meeting in Texas next week.  I'll be arriving @ DFW 2:30 p on Monday and departing same 4:00 on Wed.  It will be my first time ever stepping foot in TX.

I'm looking for a rec for something interesting to do, and someplace cool to dine on Monday afternoon/evening.  I'm pretty sure the rest of my time will be consumed by co-workers, if not work.

Help a girl out?

More Joy Day 2012

fullygoldy: CKR Smile More (Smile)
I almost missed it! I thought it was usually Feb 10?  Anyhoo...

Since I had no idea it was upon us until my reading list lit up, I didn't think I'd be able to participate.  And the DH was extremely cranky today, so it was hard to even think about finding joy, yannow?  I need to do an actual rec post though, because the holidays brought some joyful stories.

Today I was on day 2 of 2 all-day trips to our Waukesha office, receiving the files and detritus of the 11 projects I just inherited from Mr. Annoying who was laid-off last week.  And he was just as annoying as ever, except for one thing.  At the end of today (5:20 actually) I went out to start my car, which had a couple of inches of snow on it thanks to winter finally arriving.  Mr. Annoying already had his car warming up and brushed off, and he was brushing off MY car!!  WTF! I told him I have a brush, but he kept going, so I thanked him for both the time he spent with me and the de-snowing and off he went.

So while my car was warming, I dug out my scraper/brush tool and took care of my boss's car.  He'd driven us to lunch and realized he didn't have his scraper in the car yet ("I guess I just thought winter was never going to arrive"), so he used a cloth grocery bag to wipe off his car.  I figured with the ice on his car, he'd need more than a cloth bag this time.  I have no idea how much later he stayed, but for sure his car wasn't as tough to clear off as it would have been.

So that is my meager contribution to bringing MORE JOY to the world today.

Also, today is day 1 of my cold. Bleh.
fullygoldy: McKay's got a Headache (Stay In Bed)
I haven't had a classic Monday like this in forever.  And I nearly missed out on Talk Like a Pirate Day, ARRRGH!

First off, last night I remembered to put my phone on the charger for today.  Good thing mateys, since the phone had drained down completely and shut itself off.  This morning, I'm getting ready to leave, so I collect my phone and go to turn it on. Only it won't.  I play with it a bit to no avail, then decide later to take the battery out.  The water detection spot on the end is bright pink! I don't even know when this could have happened - really anytime in the past 6 wks since the last time I looked at it.  You'd think the water event would line up with the phone-not-working event, but I know for a fact that the phone worked fine through Friday, and did not leave the safety of my purse all day Sat & Sun.  I stuck it all back together for safe keeping, and Lo, the phone, it is alive. (Imma request a replacement though, too many weird phone probs this summer).

Second, I got to work and spent the morning online, catching up on administrative "year end" stuff (it's our FYE this month).  After lunch, I notice I'm having trouble with my internet connection.  I figure it's my POS VPN connection.  But no, restarting that is a no-go. Then I realize my Cricket connection has dropped.  No biggie, just reconnect. Only it WON'T.  Keeps saying "cannot connect to network." Sure enough, the little light on the device is red, not blue.  Keep trying for about half an hour, to no avail.  Decide I'll go home to finish up some stuff.  Leave a note for the guy coming in at 3, and head out.

Third (as in three strikes, you're outta here), I get home to the great surprise and delight of DH.  I relate my woes. I say, "so I came home to get back online."  He laughs at me. "Nope, not gonna happen."
Me: Why not?
Him:  Power is out in the neighborhood.  Fire Dept and Electric Co trucks are in the neighborhood.
Me:  ....
Me:  You wanna take the dogs for a walk?

After the walk, the power is restored, but my desire to do anything productive is seriously eroded. I straightened up my office (which I haven't actually inhabited in over a year).  I've still got to put the clean sheets on the guest bed, and clean up a doggie stain in the corner (it requires more attention than the 18-yr old gave it), and there's a boat load of filing of both personal and work-related stuff.  But the desk is clean, there's room for yoga, and I'm looking forward to moving back in at the end of the month.  Just, I'm not in the mood to actually work in here today.

And yay! Just like that, Monday is officially OVAH!! (It's 5:00 where I am, sorry if it's not for you).  DH just left for his first of 10 mandolin lessons, and now is officially the time I have set aside for more-intense-than-usual yoga workouts for the next 10 Mondays. I've got at least 1.5 hrs, maybe by the end of the run, I'll actually have the stamina to go that long.

Seriously, Anu!

Okay, I'm off to my all-day kick-off of the Beloit project.  Wish me luck!  It's me, 6 subcontractors, 2 other branches of my Co and 13 school buildings for the next 6 months.  $1.7 million later - shiny new energy saving stuff in action! \o/

Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

[livejournal.com profile] sasha_feather  gave me:  "good food, your family, SGA fangirling, Oktoberfest, and construction management. It's actually hard to just pick five things."

1) good food - well, I grew up in the vegetable garden of the country, CA, and spent my childhood snitching perfectly ripened whatever off vines and trees and out of gardens that may or may not have belonged to me.  So that was probably the start.  Neither of my parents could cook when they got married (at 20 & 18) so they learned together, and kept learning and experimenting, so that when I got old enough to wield utensils, naturally I joined in the learning too.  Food was just this huge adventure at our house, so when I moved out, I continued in that vein.  Plus, it's not hard to make/serve food that is as nourishing to the eye and soul as it is to the body.  So it seems a shame not to bring out its full potential.

2) family - heh.  I was a princess for a long time (so much so that the entire family made the trek when I graduated from college).  I was the middle grandkid of 11 (mom's side) with the next oldest and next youngest being 5 yrs away from me and male.  My mom's side of the family was all nearby, so we had extended family get-togethers for all the major holidays and at least once each summer.  My dad was the only visibly present male influence on my cousins, since grandpa lived 8 hrs away.  All my older cousins took turns babysitting me, and I'd spend weeks of my summer at my grandparents house. Then they all took turns working for my dad (a landscaper) so that we saw each other daily.  My DH had similar extended family experiences, so we decided to make sure our kids got the benefit of that as much as possible, even when we no longer lived so close to relatives.  We've been "on our own" for 10 yrs now, but we truly do enjoy each other's company.  I love my kids a lot, but I also like and respect them as people.  I've always tried to encourage them to be the kind of people they want to be remembered as.  Does that make sense? Anyway, our friends have always seemed to like our kids, and have their own relationships with them.  I/we think it's important for people to have friends outside their immediate age group/obvious social group, and the kids seem to have embraced the spirit of that.  We also have lots of chosen family, as all 4 of us seem to have inherited the trait of picking up strays.

3) SGA - Like! OMG! /valley girl.  I love science fiction.  And pretty, pretty boys.  And pretty boys in luurrve.  So, what's not to fangir about SGA?! LOL Plus, ALL the best writers have tried their hand at SGA to great effect.  It's a huge and active fandom, so there's still something new everyday :)

4) Oktoberfest - see #1! Actually, this goes back to my northern CA college town (Chico!).  There was an enclave of germanic folk who'd hold Oktoberfest every year, and even though they were in no way associated with the uni, they'd be invaded by the cool kids who were in-the-know, and had turned the polka into a contact sport.  Yes, we participated in the "Slam Polka" - what? it was the 80s.  So, there I was, in 1987, married to B, and feeling homesick, and looking at a gentrified Oktoberfest menu in Bon Appetit, when he and our good friend, the-strange-man-with-a-shopping-cart, said, "we should have an Oktoberfest Party!"  A tradition was born, strange guy co-hosted with us for many years, and the smallest one we ever had was the first year we lived in WI - '99.  That year, we just took ourselves down to the Essen Haus and ate and drank till we wanted to pop.  The menu has morphed over time, but we've always tried to remain true to the spirit of the original harvest celebration.  My shining memory is probably the year an actual native of Germany attended, the mom of some neighbors, and she said, "I didn't know you would have food like this.  This is not usual Oktoberfest food - this is truly special event food.  And it's authentic."  It meant alot, because even though my Dad's side of the family is German, and he's from Up Nort, no one ever handed down any of those traditions to me.  B's favorite (prior to the pig roast) was the year the DA, the Sheriff and the stoners were all standing around the bonfire together, socializing like they'd been fast friends for years, while the Wiccans were teaching the little kids how to talk the fire bigger. LOL.  That was a sight.

5) construction management - listen, have you got about a year? Seriously, I love my career. I love my current job. I am always fascinated by building sites, techniques and materials.  I'm thrilled about the lean toward "green" in the industry. There is not enough time in the day to keep up with it all.  I have no idea what you want to hear here...  I got bit by the bug when I was 3 or 4.  My dad took me to see our tract house midway through construction.  I still vividly remember that visit.  I think it was my mom's gentle suggestion to pursue architecture (being more genteel than actual construction) but I found CM in my friendly school of industrial technology, looked at the course load and went, "huh.  I'm interested in all these classes and half of this stuff I already know I'm good at."  KISMET. I was the 6th woman to get a degree in CM at Chico, and I had the highest starting salary of my class at graduation.  $27K was an unheard of offer in those days.
I know it happened mainly because there were only 2 women graduates that year, and large companies were just starting to try to hire more women.  In some ways, I know it's been an unfair advantage, because I've always found work faster than the men I know. BUT. I've also put up with my share of unfair bullshit.  And, I'm damn good at my job.  I was born for this job, and I know it.
When I first started out, I was super mindful that my performance would have an impact on the women in line behind me.  And I knew they were there.  I also knew it wasn't just women in CM I was on point for.  It was all women who were trying to get into male-dominated fields, everywhere.  I really believe that.  So, I'm really grateful that my interest, temperment and ability all melded so well.  Because I've never been fired, or thrown off a site, or had my project handed to someone else to rescue.  I had been a utility infielder for most of my career, which offers great job security, but about three years ago, I got promoted to closer.  I'm pretty proud of that.  Maybe even more proud than I am of finally being a starter in every sense of the word. (yeah, baseball metaphors. let me know if you need any translation).  So now, I'm pretty sure that job offers come in for Goldy, instead of for that-woman-named-Goldy, if you know what I mean.  The only thing that would make my career any better would be to finally fulfill my secret fantasy of being the PM for a space station.  Not gonna happen, but I'm surprisingly OK with that.

fullygoldy: Yellow Roses (Make Books)

This will make 6 months in a row!  But it's a business trip this time, so no chance of a reprieve.  I leave Monday at noon and return Wed night.  Even though I haven't been able to participate in the discussions, I have read most of the books although I never did get to the graphic novels.  I like the help in choosing things to read - I just never know where to start.  Like today - I ran over to B&N to grab something for the flight, and ended up with:

  That's "DragonFlight" by Anne McCaffrey.

The reason I picked this is that the club is discussing "A Companion to Wolves."  It's a Meta-thing. ;)  Apparently this is the first published book in the series, but not the first story chronologically. ::shrug::

I also acquired
  Catherine Asaro's "Alpha"

Which is the second of three, but hopefully I won't be too lost, since I'd never even heard of "Sunrise Alley."  I've read a few of Asaro's earlier things - I really enjoyed "Quantum Rose" but never got to much of anything else in the Skolian Empire universe.  I should rectify that sometime.

Both of these appear to be "snacks" that should last long enough for the trip to and from Orlando.  I don't know why anyone thinks these cool locations are perks.  You get stuck inside all freaking day, with fluorescent lighting and over-conditioned air, so why bother going someplace nice?  You never see the light of day anyway. You end up eating stupid chain-restaurant food, and sleeping in cookie-cutter hotel rooms.  It's not really travelling, it's just working from ever more inconvenient locations.  With the weather predicted to be in the 80s, it's hard to know how to dress for the trip too.  I don't want to freeze during the first half, but I don't want to melt when I get there.  Coming back will be even harder.  At least it's not a driving trip.  I didn't have anything on hand that would last for a long drive.  I really should look into getting an iPod.  That way, I could download all kinds of podfic for driving. :)

fullygoldy: Peanuts Gang Dancing (Dance Fever)
Back at school today, and this afternoon, I was delighted to arrive during a music class in which (probably) 4th graders were enthusiastically singing Bohemian Rhapsody!   \o/

I don't care that it's 30 yrs old - that's freakin' awesome man!

Also, two new names for the list:  Xzaiver, and Kaizyn.
fullygoldy: Yellow Roses (Default)
 I have good reasons!

1) I haven't read the book (China Mountain Zhang)
2) I have ordered the book, but it hasn't arrived
3) I have two other books that did arrive (The Green Glass Sea and Earth Logic)
4) I left for work at 0645 this morning, spent 9 hrs driving or on my feet, and didn't have a lunch break, so I was too tired to schlep across town considering items 1 & 2.
5) I should be trying to finish a flashfic that has a Thursday midnite deadline (and is already over 2000 words!) (I need an SGA beta too)

Tomorrow, I'm near campus all day, but that's likely to be 9-10 hrs without lunch too.  And Wed I'll be back at the elementary schools all day.
fullygoldy: Caldwell's Un-happy face (Happy Face)
Spelling, punctuation and grammar are less important than getting all the facts down.  Penmanship however, is very important.  If they can't read it, it's not going to help you later.

"24 hours" (meaning "the crew worked 24 hours today") is not a suitably specific entry.

If the log book is started and labeled specifically for a project, do not make entries that refer only to other projects.  Those entries belong in other log books.

"I spent 4 hrs going over problems and conflicts in the gym" is also not suitably specific.  A list of the problems discussed, who was present for the discussion and any agreed upon resolutions are all valuable information and highly appreciated 2+ yrs after the project is completed.

Bullet points are acceptable (although I tend to write in complete sentences - damn those grade school english lessons!)

Listing the hours spent & even the tasks worked on by crew member and by project module or phase are very very helpful.  So don't do it that way for 5 days and then switch back to the cryptic "X hours" mode for another week.

Do record inconveniences, delays, mistakes or misdirection caused by other contractors, the CM, the Owner, the Architect, the Engineer.  Also unusual weather events.  These will help you get money and/or time extensions.

Do not record in vivid detail how your own company is screwing you out of being able to complete the project on time, or that your company's credit is so bad at the supply house, they'll only take cash now, or that your boss has stated he is trying to "stick it" to any other member of the project team.  These will help your company lose in a lawsuit, thereby costing money and/or time, and most likely your job.

I'm just sayin'.

My Day Sucks

Thursday, October 25th, 2007 04:10 pm
fullygoldy: Caldwell's Un-happy face (Happy Face)

I'm having a pretty terrible day at work.  I've been waiting for over a month for some answers from some people who I am "helping out."  They are not even in my department.  Most of what I'm doing for them is entirely new to me, so I have to have a lot of hand holding.  Last week, they promised me their undivided attention this morning to finalize these items.  I promised our client that I'd have answers today.

This morning, the main person said I'd have to wait for the other person to come and give me answers because "her head just wasn't in it."  She gave me concrete information for one other item on my list of 6.  When the other person arrived, he wanted to just handwave what was supposed to be detailed documentation.  I took his instruction and made it look nice and official on letterhead and got his blessing to send it.  The client just blasted me for it's inadequacy.  So basically, what I'm doing on this job is running interference.  If anyone needs a scapegoat to yell at, I get to throw myself at them.  It's a great job, and I'm so lucky to have something that utilizes my specific skills so well.

I decided to go home for lunch to get a hug from DH.  He sent me a really nice email (that made me tear up) which I read right before lunch.  I went home to find that DH had gone out for the afternoon.  ETD stuff I shouldn't have said in this venue.  so I'm probably just reacting badly because the rest of my day sucks.  And I wanted a hug.

Tomorrow, I have to sit in on a conference call for the project that refuses to die.  I'm so tired of this project that I've contemplated quitting this gig just to get away from it.

That seasonal depression thing is starting up already.  Or I'm just generally depressed, but blaming it on the season.

ETA: thanks to everybody for sending good wishes and happy thoughts, I really needed them and I'm grateful you took the time to send them.

Moline?!

fullygoldy: globe wrapped in a rainbow (Rainbow Earth)

Now the B-52's are going to be stuck in my head.

Anyway, what's the best way to get to Moline, IL from the Madison area?  I was thinking 39 south to 88 west, but Mapquest says it's quicker to go through Dubuque and Davenport which is 61 south.

Apparently, I've got the opportunity to get another fairly steady assignment that is out of town for a few days a week, but I still haven't heard all the details, so I don't know more than that.  The upside is plenty of hours on the old timecard. The downside is being out of town half the week.  Another up is not scrambling for actual work to do - so not making up excuses to keep hanging around.  Down - another 3-hr drive each way - I seriously need to go to the library for audio books.  Up - Stoneycreek Inn is also in Moline and I have a "frequent flyer" membership there - that puts me much closer to earning the free stay.

Help a woman out, and give me the scoop on Moline...

fullygoldy: Yellow Roses (Smoke dreams)

Here I am in Joliet, IL for 3 days.  I'm subbing for a PM who had a family emergency.  This is the same guy whose job I had to do a post mortem on, because his documentation skills suck.  Apparently, this project is also going poorly, and will probably end up in litigation.  So our boss thinks this is the perfect time for me to come to the site and whip things into shape while PM is gone.  However, Mr PM didn't want me here, and thought he'd convinced boss that the job didn't need babysitting.  Imagine his surprise on fri, when I call to make arrangements.  Our boss had not informed him of the change of plans.  So I arrive today, thinking I'll at least have stuff to file, and there's nothing.  This is not a good "nothing," as in everything is so organized and up-to-date there is nothing for me to do.  This is a bad nothing, as in all but two files have obviously been removed from the job trailer.  The few things that were left were neatly organized, but the most recent dates on entries were Feb & Mar.  Where is all the April stuff, Mr PM?  Good thing I brought plenty of my own work to do.

The crew leaves at 3:30, so I headed for the hotel and a nap shortly after.

fullygoldy: Fork you (Fork you)
I haven't had the emotional energy to post much lately, mainly because most of what I've been thinking about posting has been a long string of whining.  Or whinging, if you're on the other side of the ocean.

No, it will take too long.  Let me sum up:  I think I need to get laid.  Preferably in a tropical paradise.
At least tonight they'll be giving us the 2007 Dream Home in CO ::g::  Well, if they know what's good for them, they'll be awarding it to us.

So the same coworker tells this story today:

A subcontractor called complaining about being denied a change order (which they were not entitled to anyway, trust me).

coworker: I'm sorry, but I'm not going to approve this.
subcontractor: Can I speak to whomever you report to?
coworker: Okay. Puts phone on hold, takes off Project Mgr hat, and counts to something.
coworker: Hi, it's me again.
subcontractor: Um...
coworker: Here's the thing. I'm the *Branch Manager* so I don't think I'll be approving this in that capacity either.
subcontractor: ::small voice:: oh, okay.

LOVES!! I love a profession where you can take the direct route to "you'll take what I give you and you'll like it." Guess that's why I'm here :)

I've been meaning to post this for a long time. Last July, I heard my co-worker in the next cubicle telling this story to her boss:

This engineer called me and asked me to get someone to write him a program by next Monday. I said, “Dude, no way. Everyone here is covered up and going crazy.” He then called one of my direct reports and asked *him* to write the program. My guy said, “I’m sorry, I’m booked up right now. I can get it done by the end of August." Which is what, 5 wks from now? The engineer called me back and said, “You have to help me.” I said, “Okay, I’ll help you. What project is it?” He tells me and I pull out the drawings to look at the date they were issued. I said, “I’m going to help you with some time management skills. If you issue drawings in April, and you need a program written to go with them, you need to ask for it in April. Goodbye.” And I hung up the phone.

Seriously! She is just the person to do this. Unfortunately, I don't sit next to her anymore, so the only stuff I overhear now is from the dumb receptionist who drives me crazy.

Didn't get the Sr. PM job though. That's okay, not the end of the world or anywhere near. The job went to an internal candidate who's been working on mega-projects in Mexico for the past few yrs. He technically lives in MLW and he wanted to come *home.* He also had more big project experience than me. Possibly, they'll post a regular PM position this year, and I should be the shoo-in candidate for that if you can put any stock in my potential boss's word.

He said the experience was the deciding factor in a very difficult decision. So that's something, and I'm still working on all the same projects I was last week, because there's more than enough for the new guy to work on anyway. If I *had* gotten the job, I'd probably have to drop everything I'm doing and switch gears. I still wouldn't mind getting some paid vacation, but I guess that can wait. If they start needing more of my time, I'll get a big, fat raise this year anyway :)

Looking back, I see that I have failed to mention that Rupert is now the tallest person living in our house.  He is also the youngest person.  Somehow, that doesn't seem fair.  OTOH, I have no problem calling him into the kitchen to reach stuff for me whenever I need it.

Rupert and Mavis are going off to do teen stuff after school today, so after DH & I do the weekly Dr checkup at 5:00 (what Dr schedules appts at 5 pm on a Friday?), we can go off and do something like a normal adult couple.  But we'll probably just end up at the Dane again, LOL.

I know a lot of people are wondering where the heck winter is, but this is totally the type of winter I can deal with.  I like not having to wear 3 layers of clothes.  It's too bad we didn't get this winter last year.  It would have totally saved my library project schedule.

The PM I'm helping down in Arlington Heights called me this morning at 6:50!  He needed a schedule update for a 9:00 meeting.  However, I do get to duck out of work at 3 for the aforementioned appt.

Took Ruby to the shop on Wed afternoon for her 105k miles maintenance.  It turns out that the high-pitched squealing noise was the rear brakes after all.  So, all the normal maintenance (except the recommended timing belt replacement) plus the rear brake pads & newly machined rotors for $251.  In another couple of months, I might go ahead and let them do the timing belt, but first I'll check the records I have to see if it has ever been replaced before.

Next week, I'll spend 2.5 days down in Arlington Heights trying to help out on 3 different projects.  Hopefully shortly after that, I'll get to start up one of my own - as Owner Rep for the Houston County Courthouse in MN (right across the river from LaCrosse).  I am so ready to be fully involved in a project again.  The post mortem I'm doing isn't as complete as I thought - I found out yesterday that the PM is still holding onto a good portion of the files, so any conclusions I've drawn so far are likely to be worthless once I get to look at the rest of the stuff. ::sigh::

I feel really out of the poly loop.  I've quit reading the posts in the yahoo lists I belong to, because the people whose posts I enjoyed most seem to have drifted away.  I realize a big part of my disassociation has to do with the issues of the past year.  I didn't need to add any drama to the year, but it's the beginning of a new year and I'm looking around, going, "huh.  what's next?"

I think I'm ready to verbalize a resolution for 2007 also:  I'm going to strengthen my friendships with my women friends.  Actually talk to them on the phone and go do stuff with them that doesn't involve all of our partners and children.  I realized that the only time I seem to see most of my friends anymore is at parties.  I think that's kind of weird.

Well, less than 3 hours left in the workweek :)  Maybe this weekend, I'll update my journal theme too.  If I'm not too busy undecorating the house.

So I'm thinking I should do a real post, right? Instead of just another meme or Stargate squee or whatever. I haven't felt very inspired lately though, hence the lack of substantial posts.

boring details... )

I'm working on a project for a colleague.  She wanted to produce a procedure manual that was interactive - if you click on a link in the document, it would open another document. It's fairly easy to do if you know your links will always be in the same directories, but that is not the case with this manual.  I've received CDs before that are set up to work this way, and all the info/links are on the CD and work nicely together.  I figured I could reproduce this type of interaction by creating a web page and then storing it on a CD.  That seems to have worked well except for one thing, and this is where I need help.

The initial starting or "home" page is contained within the web's folder, so when you insert the CD, you have to open the one folder and click on the correct page to get started.  The page is buried in a long list.  I'd like to find a way to have this page always load when you insert the CD into the drive, without having to go look for it much.  I thought maybe a simple run.exe type file would point to the page to get us started, but I have absolutely no idea if that's the right thing to do, nor do I actually know how to create the file.

In a perfect world, when the CD is installed, the browser would show two items, the web folder, and the "click here to start" file.  Can someone help me?  Bueller?

What did I possibly do to deserve this woman?

Trying to get her to order me a camera was bad enough last winter, but this is ridiculous.  The woman works 9-2 *and* takes a half hour lunch every day, in which no one dares ask her anything work related.  Heaven forbid you should come up to her at 1:30 or *gasp* 1:45 and ask her to send out a package either.

So Monday, I noticed my printer ink (both color and black) were running very low.  I didn't remember to speak to the woman directly on Tuesday, so I sent her an email with my request for one black ink cartridge.  I included the pertinent details - manufacturer and cartridge number, because even though she's ordered ink for me many times before, I didn't expect her to have kept the info.  I didn't order a color cartridge because I have one sitting here on my desk already.  In addition, I pulled both cartridges out and shook them a little to improve the output until new ink arrives (Yes, that actually helps a bit).

Technically, we have an office supplies vendor who delivers our orders the very next day, so I expected to receive my ink today.  I printed something, and noticed that I can barely read it, so I thought I better follow up on the ink.  When I asked if it had been ordered, I was expecting her to say, "yep."  Instead, she said, "No" and really appeared to have no intention of elaborating.  After giving her my version of the 'eyebrow of doom,' she finally says, "I've been trying not to make lots of little orders, because I don't really know what our contract with the vendor is like, and I suspect that it costs us more to make lots of orders instead of one big order, so the only thing I have right now is your ink, and I'm waiting for other people to order things before I send it in."
Me: "Um, my printer is running right now, and I can barely read the pages."
She: "Fine, I'll order you two cartridges, and when you get down to one, you let me know so I can add you to the order list before you run out again."
Me: "Okay, I'll do that.  And you better order me a color one while you're at it, because I'm about to put my last one in the printer."
She: "Okay."

I'm asking you, is it too much to be informed of new ordering procedures before you've been screwed by them??  What if I had still been in the field?  At least here, I can switch to a network printer temporarily.  In the field, there are no other printers!

Later, She:  "Are you set up to print to the network printers?  I just wanted to make sure, because then you'll always have a backup."  Absolutely no clue that her arbitrary changing of the rules was the slightest bit inconvenient.

On that same note, I checked my bank account this morning, and for the 4th week in a row, I had not received my expense reimbursement.  Now earlier expense reports were processed within 2 weeks, so I didn't even start worrying about it till last week.  And I called last week to ask what was going on, and got the classic, "that's not my job" response.  So I thought fine, they've been approved (I checked), they'll show up next week (today).  Wrong.  I call again, and get voice mail.  When the person returns my call, she says, "I don't usually work with expenses, but I checked into it for you."  Aha! Customer Service is not entirely dead.  I'll get reimbursed next week.  "And have you been sending in copies of your reciepts?"

Me:  "Um, what?"
Rosa:  "You need to fax in copies of your receipts to your rep."
Me:  "No one told me that.  I specifically asked what the procedures were, and was told just to fill out the form on line."
Rosa:  "Well, yes, that was the procedure, but they've very recently changed it and now you have to fax in the receipts before you get reimbursed."
Me:  "So is this why it's been four weeks since my expenses were approved, and I haven't been paid?"
Rosa:  "Probably."
Rosa:  "I'm sorry you didn't get the memo.  Just, in the future, please fax them.  Oh, and let me find out exactly what number you should fax them to, and I'll call you back."

So now I have the number, and I need to go copy all my old receipts (yes, I obsessively keep this stuff in my files.  Whenever I leave a company, I have a huge file of every expense report I ever submitted to take with me.  And yes, I have actually had to go digging in there for back up, at least once, at every company, thank-you-very-much).  At least I only have 4 or 5 reports to copy.  I only submitted the first one in June.

But, Man! Twice in one day!  at least I get to use my shiny new icon.  Icon love! Shiny!
