The Mix and Match Fandom Paperdolls set by [livejournal.com profile] zelempa was made for the likes of [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza , [livejournal.com profile] sasha_feather , [livejournal.com profile] jesse_the_k and ME!!

Also, check out the community [livejournal.com profile] paintedspires  for some gorgeous, fun, and crack-tastic art such as: [livejournal.com profile] crysothemis's totally awesome "Twas Brillig,"
"Cherry Blossoms" by [livejournal.com profile] ileliberte or
[livejournal.com profile] astridv's "Muppet: Atlantis"

I've got over a dozen of the offerings tagged in my memories.  Some of them are begging for stories to be written, and some of them are perfect illustrations for already existing stories, but the artists don't say they intended to do that.  I can't believe how many talented artists there are in this fandom.

Stupid Rain!

fullygoldy: Fork you (Fork you)
Dammit!  Today is supposed to be the first outdoor ABDC event of the year.  A Mothers' Luncheon Al Fresco in our backyard.  And sure, we can seat all 11 attendees (barely) at the indoor table, but I've been looking forward to the outdoor dining for about 2 months now.  I have flowers! and white linens! and wine glasses that were supposed to sparkle in the mid-day sun, while the lilac bush perfumed the air. ::sigh::

Instead, I awoke to the pitter patter of rain on the windows, grey skies and the front door rug draped over the bush by the front door getting soaked.  Also?  Twice before going to bed last night, I reminded the boy to make sure the dishwasher would run before morning.  I didn't want to have to wait to empty and start reloading it this morning with guest arriving at 11:30.  So you can imagine my dismay and ire, upon finding dirty dishes in the dishwasher at 7:30 am.  Happy Mother's Day to me.

We managed to rehang our biggest piece of original art in the great room this morning.  This piece was a wedding present, and in 20 yrs it has hung in the breakfast room, over the mantle (twice) at the top of the stairs, and now over the sofa.  I hope to finish choosing and framing the black and white portraits for the entrance hall soon.  DH did a nice job on the two-tone paint, and I can't wait to see the final dressed-up result.  We think we'll get our newest acquisition hung at the top of the stairs before guests arrive too.

Okay. I'm off to dress the table, play with flowers and prep the "Soup with No Water."  Today's theme is "What would you like to serve your mother?"  This soup is my mother's favorite.  Or it's her favorite thing to serve me.  Or its her favorite thing to serve when she's showing off.  Or maybe it's all of the above.  Anyway, when I told her last weekend about the theme, she asked, "oh, then what are you serving me?" When I said "the Soup with No Water, of course."  She squealed, "Yay!" and clapped her hands.  So that's one motherly vote of approval. :)  Too bad it's only a virtual meal for her, since she is on the coast and I am not.

Last thing, I dreamt I went to a tattoo parlor with my mom to see about getting my tattoo finally.  I've been back and forth about deciding what to get and where to get it.  In my dream, I had decided on the rainbow infinity sign that I picked out the last time I was seriously considering this, and the spot at the outside top of my calf that was my original tattoo location (but was intended to be a comma butterfly).  I had chosen the infinity symbol for the back of my neck at the base.  I didn't get the tattoo in my dream, because we had gone in at the spur of the moment, and I didn't have the pic with me.  But I made an appointment to go back.  It's an odd dream to me, because my mother would never be caught dead in a tattoo parlor, and I hadn't given the tattoo question any thought in months.  I'll have to think about this one.

Our Town

I have to say it again, "I LOVE our town." It is so SQUARE!

God, I love our town!!  If you ask me, it's as close to heaven as a city can get.

And don't even get me started on next month.  [profile] rougebitch has aptly renamed it "the day of public drunkenness," but it's real name is  "The Great Taste of the Midwest."  The midwest's largest, most popular, most exclusive beer festival, where 5000 or so  beer fiends will descend upon Olin Turville Park and drink themselves silly.  If you didn't get your tickets the first week of May, we won't be seeing you there.  You'd think with these conditions, there'd be fisticuffs galore, but these are the happiest, politest drunks you'll ever meet.  We're all just so damn grateful to be there, tasting the fantastic lagers, ales & meads, thrilled to meet the brewers and hear about their trials and inspiration, delighted to see friends we've made in the past, that we only see here, once a year.  It's another fantastic recurring event hosted in our town, but this one isn't held on the square.

What's not to love? (and hey, that's rhetorical, okay?  don't be killing my buzz in comments today)

Last night, I was describing my first visit to the Milwaukee Art Museum to a friend, and I realized I should really record these thoughts.

Last April, we went to MAM to see the Degas exhibit.  It was tres cool.  First of all, the MAM itself is an amazing building.  It looks like a sailing ship at dock, poised on the edge of the lake they call Michigan.  At least, it does when it's "wings" are closed, as I expect they are at this moment, given the incessant windstorm we're having in SE Wisc.  When the wings are open, it looks like some kind of abstract albatross.  I have a way cool pic that I took myself as my desktop wallpaper.  We arrived just as the wings were doing the midday "flap" and I took pics from the car.

Degas )
Wyeth )
Monet )

And after relaying this same story last night, with all my passion and excitement oozing out, and my sweet, dear audience-of-one seeming to appreciate all of it, it occurs to me that all I needed was a little perspective. And now I wonder, is that why his stuff was originally so un-appreciated?  How long did it take for people to realize that this was no ordinary art that you viewed from a bench 4 feet away from the piece.  You can't be in the same room to grasp this.  You must give it space and see the larger picture.  And now I think, hey, Monet's work is a metaphor for life.  We can't appreciate our lives without a larger perspective, and distance clarifies instead of obscuring. Huh.  I think I've finally reached "worthy."

ETA: I think it's very interesting that Monet's work was reviled or at least shunned for being not-realistic-enough, and Degas' work involving women was labeled "obscene" because it was uber-realistic. Some critics accused Degas of misogyny because he didn't idealize 'the perfect woman' in every piece. These guys weren't so far separated in time that this would seem reasonable to me. It's just too big of a swing in my mind.

Who Needs Fandom?!

Well, I do, obviously, but when real life hands you some fun, boy-boy interaction, it's a plus.  The following tale of adorableness by two RL boys is intended only for fun, and I apologize if anyone is offended.

This all started last weekend when I went to DH's work party.  Two of his buddies, Ronny and Ty (names are changed to protect - someone) were there.  Ronny is 30-something and Ty is the aforementioned 20-something tadpole.  These two are excitedly telling us about their day hiking/climbing at Devil's Lake, and they're affectionately bitching at each other in the story and while telling it.  So that's hint #1.  Ronny is twisting his foot around as he speaks, and fluttering his hands like crazy.  Hint #2.  Ronny looks and acts like Chandler Bing.  Hint #3.  And both of them switch to telling us how excited they are to be moving soon to Charleston.  They're going to work together.  Hint #4.  So I turn to DH, and say, "they are SO doing each other!" <squee>.  He laughs and says "yeah."  He now knows I'll be watching them for more slashable moments.

After a bit, Ty calms down, we start talking and this is where the flirting ensued.  He mentions girls quite frequently, so I adjust my perception to Bi.  But Ronny is still gay, gay, gay.  Ty invites us all to go to a luau party a friend of his is having, and we're just drunk enough to think more partying is a good idea.  Five of us pile into Ty's little Nissan, with Ty and Ronny up front, and we make the trek across town.  If we had realized we were going from our neighborhood to Westport, we probably would have passed, but it was too late to go back by the time we figured it out.  We arrive when the luau has pretty much wound down, and meet our hosts.  They're a co-habitating gay couple.  They were very nice to us total strangers, and plied us with alcoholic rootbeer floats and lots of good food. Yum!  Ty mentions to me that he hangs out with these guys all the time, and they cook him dinner almost every Sunday.  I'm thinking "I bet they'd like to make him more than dinner."

We didn't make it home until 1:30 am, and a large part of that had to do with the car.  This night was the cause of my last hangover for the week.  Wednesday night, DH tells me Ty's evening didn't finish until 6:30 am Sunday, because after dropping us off, he picked up his girlfriend and they went to another party where "all the girls were naked, all the guys were in their underwear, and everyone was doing E."  I'm thinking, the guys were probably not in their underwear for very long, and E wasn't the only thing they were doing.  <smirk> Thursday, DH mentions that Ty has invited us to meet he and Ronny at our favorite pub on Friday (last) night.

Last night, we get there before the guys, and have a pint and some delicious wings.  Ty and Ronny arrive, and this time, it's Ronny who's in flirting mode.  More pints, and a shooter, and Ronny says, "you want to come over for low-country boil?"  Of course we do!  Just because we don't want to live in SC anymore, doesn't mean we can't appreciate southern delicacies!  We run home to pick up the red-skinned potatoes, and the fresh corn relish DH made, and then head over to Ronny's.  Ty runs home to shower before dinner.

While we're waiting for Ty and getting the boil started (I got to play with the cleaver), Ronny shows us all this beautiful art of his mother's.  Lots of studies of Rainbow Row and the Battery in Charleston.  Really really nice stuff; she's a very successful artist.  And some other original art picked up from around the world.  And his extensive collection of cookbooks, and I'm thinking, "yep.  Gay.  Only a gay guy's loft apartment would look like this."  Ty arrives, and over a very delicious boil, he tells us the story of another buddy/co-worker, who had to call him up this morning to tell Ty all about the dream he had about Ty & Ronny: They were moving to SC and Ronny's wife didn't know that Ty was moving with them, and Ty was pissed at Ronny because he hadn't told her, and apparently the dreamer was trying to smooth things over for them.  Can you see my point?  They are SO doing each other.

This is where Ronny suddenly mentions his absent wife, the PhD in Performing Arts who is currently touring with an Opera company.  He hasn't had any 'good love' since April!  "Wait! Wait! You're married?" "yep."  Look at DH, "he's married?" "Uh.  Oh yeah.  I knew he had a wife somewhere, but she's never here, so I forgot."  ROFL  I thought the wife in the dream was just a dream-wife.

But.  Until they move, I've got my very own, RL slashfest going on under my nose.  Because they are SO doing each other.
