Serenity

fullygoldy: One True Ray (K) (OTR)

Went to see the movie today with [livejournal.com profile] barley52 .  We had planned to go on opening day, but we forgot all about it (!) until it was too late to catch an early show and too late to get one in before we were going to try to meet some friends.  So we waited until DH's next 'weekend' which started today.  I have to say, from now on, I only want to go to matinees on Thursday (or another midweek day).  We thought we were going to be the only people in the theater, but just before the movie started, two people came in and sat a few rows down below us, but off to the side.  We were dead center of the screen.  Cool!

My thoughts:  Serenity = Awesome. Really.  I thoroughly enjoyed the movie even though I haven't seen all the episodes.  I loved that gaps in the backstory were filled in.  It was great to see just how Simon got River out of the Alliance's clutches.  I'm not going to get spoilery, but I do want to share my favorite lines.

Jayne:  "She's beginning to damage my calm."  (Expect to hear this one a lot from me ~smirk~)

Kaylee:  "I haven't had anything between my nethers that wasn't battery operated in months!"

The Op:  "Do you know what your sin is?"
Mal:  "I'm a fan of all seven.  Right now, I'd have to go with wrath."

[livejournal.com profile] cesperanza has some really interesting thoughts on the movie here but there are some spoilery bits too.  She points out how Serenity is like a fan fic of Star Wars, and at first I thought "huh?" but then I thought about it and realized how true that is. I was 14 when SW came out and I saw it in the drive-in with my dad and sisters.  I was in the front seat and pounding on the windshield and screaming "Go! Go!" during that last run on the death star, my totally bemused dad saying "honey, calm down, it's just a movie...."  I had that same feeling during parts of Serenity, but even though we were nearly alone, I refrained from screaming this time. :)

It's weird because I don't think I consciously pick up on subtle stuff like that, but I must be subconsciously receiving and processing these impressions because whenever someone points them out, I'm all "yes! yes, exactly!"  When Ces says "...Joss is as caught up as any of us in the "be him or fuck him" dilemna that haunts fandom" it's like a revelation.  Because I look back on my favorite pairings in fandom and I realize that my OTPs consist of someone I identify with and someone I'm in love with.  So I'm continually wanting to be one and fuck the other, LOL.  If I tell you my all time pairing is Benton Fraser and Ray Kowalski, will you know which is which?

To reiterate, the movie was great fun, and I'm really glad I saw it in the theater instead of waiting till later.  I'm too cheap to go to the theater very often, but there are just some movies that deserve the big screen.  This is one of them.

And that stupid critic's opinion notwithstanding, I think Nathan Fillion's face is perfectly suited to the big screen too.
